Chris Crowley
Chris Crowley has been  named Operations Manager for the company's local cluster, following his tenure as Brand Manager for Country WYRK 106.5 FM and Soft AC WMSX 96.1 FM the Breeze. The 30-years radio veteran will continue to oversee those brands in his new post.

"I'm exceedingly lucky that I get to work with such a talented, successful group of media professionals here in Buffalo. To feel like you're appreciated every day you come to work, and to be able to make an impact locally with a company like Townsquare Media means everything," said Crowley.

"I'd like to thank Mark Plimpton, Rob Williams and Kurt Johnson for the trust and confidence they've shown in me with this appointment."

Townsquare Media Buffalo also named Yasmin Young as Brand Manager for heritage Urban AC WBLK 93.7 FM.

D-C Radio: Non-Com WAMU Tweaks Line-up

According to a release, the schedule will provide the strongest possible listening and information experience for audiences. These program changes allow us to provide our weeknight audience with an array of credible journalism sources that our listeners know and trust.

The following program changes will be made:
  • The World moves to Monday through Friday at 8 p.m., replacing the evening rebroadcast of 1A. 1A will continue to air live weekdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Evening listeners can hear 1A on its podcast and streaming at the1a.org.
  • PBS NewsHour is new to the WAMU schedule. It debuts Monday through Friday at 9 p.m. WAMU is partnering with WETA to present a rebroadcast of PBS’s award-winning nightly news program for radio listeners.

  • On Point expands to five nights a week to air Monday through Friday at 10 p.m. The Friday edition of On Point is hosted by NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik.
  • Studio 360 ends production in February.
  • Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang will debut Saturday weather reports starting February 29 during NPR’s Weekend Edition.

Trump Wants To Cut Public Media Funding In Proposed Budget

The proposed fiscal year 2021 budget from President Donald Trump calls for the elimination of federal funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting over a two-year period—a bit of news that has become somewhat of an annual tradition under his administration, TVTechnology reports.

As detailed in the proposed budget, CPB would receive $30 million in FY 2021 for “agency close-out costs,” which would help fund facilities costs, personal liabilities and existing contracts. Over the proposed two-year close out, the White House estimates the total close-out costs will be $58 million.

The $30 million would be a decrease of $435 million that CPB received in federal funding in FY 2020.

“CPB funding comprises about 15% of the total amount spent on public broadcasting, with the remainder coming from non-Federal sources, with many large stations raising an even great share,” the budget reads. “This private fundraising has proven durable, negating the need for continued Federal subsidies.”

It claims that PBS and NPR, two of the most recognizable public networks supported by CPB, could makeup any shortfalls by increasing revenues from corporate sponsors, foundations and/or members. It also says that since alternative programming to PBS and NPR have grown over the years, the need for publicly funded programming options has decreased.

Trump has previously proposed similar funding phase outs or entirely eliminating funding for CPB in his budget proposals. Both Republicans and Democrats in Congress came to the support of the CPB each time to continue providing its funding. In fact, in FY 2020, the $465 million approved for CPB was the first increase in funding the organization had seen in 10 years.

TV Ratings: Oscars Sink To All-Time Low

The 2020 Oscars ceremony was watched by the smallest audience the awards show has ever received, Variety reports.

23.6 million viewers tuned in on Sunday night to see “Parasite” sweep to a surprise victory. That’s a 20%, 6 million viewer drop-off from last year. The Academy’s second hostless show in a row scored a 5.3 rating among adults 18-49 in the fast national ratings, a 31% dip from 2019.

For comparison, last year’s Oscars delivered a 7.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 29.6 million viewers. That viewership figure, while up 12% from 2018, represented the second smallest audience ever for an Academy Awards telecast at the time. 2018 delivered the previous smallest viewership tally with 26.5 million viewers.

Up until the last few years, Academy Awards viewership has generally stood between 35 and 45 million people, according to Nielsen.

News of the lows in both metrics isn’t entirely surprising, as awards show numbers in general have been in decline over the past few years. For instance, the 2020 Golden Globes dipped 2% on 2019 to eight-year viewership low, while the 2019 Emmys was the lowest-rated and least-watched in the show’s history, a refrain that is becoming all too familiar when discussing award show ratings lately.

The Oscars 2020 is still the most watched awards show of the season however, beating the Grammys by just under 5 million viewers and the Globes by 5.3 million.

Meanwhile, it was announced Monday that the XFL’s debut game drew 3.3 million viewers.

ABC announced that number and added that the viewership peaked at the end of the broadcast, which is a good sign that the game kept fans interested.

Last year, the Alliance of American Football drew 2.9 million viewers for its first game. The AAF never reached anything remotely close to that again and shut down before completing its first season.

Amazon Maintains Lead in U-S Smart Speaker Market

Amazon, which already holds a dominant position in the US smart speaker market, will continue to maintain this leadership through 2021, with approximately 70% of total US smart speaker users expected to use an Amazon Echo device, according to eMarketer's latest estimates.

This year, 69.7% of US smart speaker users will use an Echo, down slightly from 72.9% last year. By comparison, 31.7% of smart speaker users will turn to Google-branded devices, and 18.4% will use other smart speaker brands, including the Apple HomePod, Harmon Kardon Invoke and Sonos One. These percentages add up to more than 100% because some smart speaker users use more than one brand of speaker.

Though Amazon wasn’t first-to-market with a voice assistant, it had first-mover advantage in smart speakers with its US introduction of the Echo and built-in voice assistant Alexa in late 2014. Since then, it has consistently released new features that make the speaker easier and more intuitive to use. It has also opened Alexa to outside development and fostered its compatibility with thousands of Amazon-branded and third-party smart-home devices. The Echo is, however, slightly less competitive in some countries because it supports fewer non-English languages than its major competitors.

“Since Amazon first introduced the Echo, it has built a convincing lead in the US and continues to beat back challenges from top competitors,” said Victoria Petrock, a principal analyst at eMarketer. “We had previously expected Google and Apple to make more inroads in this market, but Amazon has remained aggressive. By offering affordable devices and building out the number of Alexa skills, the company has maintained Echo’s appeal.”

Morning Joe: Snoop Dogg 'Silence Is Deafening'

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough said "the media silence is deafening" regarding criticism of the rapper Snoop Dogg over his own comments about CBS News anchor Gayle King for an interview that broached the Kobe Bryant rape case.

The Hill reports the rapper, whose legal name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., posted an Instagram video that said "we expect more from you Gayle. Respect the family and back off, bitch, before we come get you."

“The media silence is deafening,” the "Morning Joe" host said on his show Monday, referring to those comments. "People like Katy Perry, worked with Snoop in the past. People like our dear friend Martha Stewart, who’s working with him now.”

“It’s time for people to speak out," he said. "Again, let’s just keep this very simple, because it is very simple. A black female journalist asked a tough question, in the middle of a wide-ranging interview, and because of that her life was threatened. ‘We’re coming to get you’ from a man, it must be remembered, who was arrested for murder,” Scarborough added.

Snoop Dogg was charged with the first- and second-degree murder of Philip Woldemariam in 1993. The rapper and his bodyguard were eventually acquitted in early 1996.

“‘We’re coming to get you’ and the New York Times doesn’t write an editorial about this? The Washington Post doesn’t write an editorial, the Wall Street Journal doesn’t, nobody talks about?” Scarborough said.

The rapper on Saturday sought to clarify his remarks, stating that he wasn't threatening King but felt she was disrespectful to the Bryant family by bringing up the 2003 rape charges against Bryant in an interview with the former WNBA star Lisa Leslie.

Bryant was accused in 2003 of sexually assaulting a Colorado hotel employee. The charges were later dropped after the employee declined to cooperate with prosecutors. She would eventually settle with Bryant outside of court, and Bryant acknowledged in an apology that the woman did not feel that their encounter was consensual.

February 11 Radio History

➦1938…'The Big Broadcast of 1938' opened in theaters. It is a Paramount Pictures musical comedy film featuring W. C. Fields, Martha Raye and Bob Hope.

The film is the last in a series of Big Broadcast movies that were variety show anthologies. This film featured the debut of Hope's signature song, "Thanks for the Memory" by Ralph Rainger. He and Leo Robin won the 1939 Oscar for Best Song for the song. In the movie they song was performed by Bob Hope and Shirley Ross.

➦In 1940...  NBC radio presented “The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street” for the first time. The famous Blue network series included several distinguished alumni — among them, Dinah Shore and Zero Mostel. The chairman, or host, of “The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street” was Milton Cross.

Milton Cross
He would say things like, “A Bostonian looks like he’s smelling something. A New Yorker looks like he’s found it.” The show combined satire, blues and jazz and was built around what were called the three Bs of music: Barrelhouse, Boogie Woogie and Blues.

➦In 1941...Glenn Miller's 'Chattanooga Choo Choo' was released on RCA Records. It was originally recorded as a big band/swing tune and featured in the 1941 movie Sun Valley Serenade. It was the first song to receive a gold record for sales of 1.2 million copies.

➦In 1949...the private-eye radio drama Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar debuted on CBS Radio, with Charles Russell in the title role.  It amazingly survived five changes in the lead actor during its 13 year run.

➥In 1960...The Payola scandal reached a new level of public prominence and legal gravity, when President Eisenhower called it an issue of public morality and the FCC proposed a new law making involvement in Payola a criminal act, according to History.

What exactly was Payola? During the hearings conducted by Congressman Oren Harris (D-Arkansas) and his powerful Subcommittee on Legislative Oversight—fresh off its inquiry into quiz-show rigging—the term was sometimes used as a blanket reference to a range of corrupt practices in the radio and recording industries. But within the music business, Payola referred specifically to a practice that was nearly as old as the industry itself: manufacturing a popular hit by paying for radio play.

As the Payola hearings got under way in February 1960, the public was treated to tales of a lavish disk-jockey convention in Miami bought and paid for by various record companies. One disk jockey, Wesley Hopkins of KYW in Cleveland, admitted to receiving over the course of 1958 and 1959 $12,000 in “listening fees” from record companies for “evaluating the commercial possibilities” of records.

Another DJ named Stan Richard, from station WILD in Boston, also admitted to receiving thousands of dollars from various record promoters, and though like Hopkins he denied letting such fees affect his choice of which records to play on the air, he also offered a vigorous defense of Payola, comparing it to “going to school and giving the teacher a better gift than the fellow at the next desk.”

He practically likened it to Motherhood and Apple Pie: “This seems to be the American way of life, which is a wonderful way of life. It’s primarily built on romance—I’ll do for you, what will you do for me?” It was this comment that prompted President Eisenhower to weigh in on February 11, 1960, with his condemnation of Payola.

Dick Clark Testifies
But what explains the involvement of Congress in this issue? Technically, the concern of the Harris Committee was abuse of public trust, since the airwaves over which radio stations broadcast their signals are property of the people of the United States. However, 1960 was also an election year, and Rep. Harris and his colleagues on the Subcommittee were eager to be seen on the right side of a highly visible “moral” issue. Though it is widely agreed that the famous 1960 hearings on Payola merely reorganized the practice rather than eradicating it, those hearings did accomplish two very concrete things that year: they threatened the career of American Bandstand‘s Dick Clark and they destroyed the man who gave rock and roll its name, the legendary Cleveland disk jockey Alan Freed.

The Beatles in Concert, Washington DC
➦In 1964...The Beatles played their first U.S. concert at the Coliseum Arena in Washington, DC. Tickets ranged from $2 to $4.

The band had traveled from New York to Washington, DC early in the day by rail, as an East Coast snowstorm had caused all flights to be cancelled. Upon arrival at Washington's Union Station The Beatles were greeted by 2,000 fans who braved the eight inches of snow on the ground. They gave a press conference before visiting WWDC, which had been the first US radio station to play a Beatles record.

Also on the bill at the Coliseum were The Chiffons and Tommy Roe. However, The Chiffons were unable to make it due to the previous day's snowstorm. Instead, the opening acts were Jay & The Americans, The Righteous Brothers and Tommy Roe.

The Beatles took to the stage at 8.31pm, and performed 12 songs: Roll Over Beethoven, From Me To You, I Saw Her Standing There, This Boy, All My Loving, I Wanna Be Your Man, Please Please Me, Till There Was You, She Loves You, I Want To Hold Your Hand, Twist And Shout and Long Tall Sally.

The group were performing in the round, and Ringo Starr's drum riser was turned 180 degrees after the third song by Mal Evans, to allow the audience behind them to watch the performance. This was repeated again after I Wanna Be Your Man, and following She Loves You they turned 45 degrees.

➦In 1994…Actor William Conrad died after a heart attack at age 73. He’d been an extremely busy member of the Hollywood talent pool for bigtime radio, notably playing Marshall Matt Dillon in CBS Radio’s Gunsmoke.  On TV he starred in two series, “Cannon” & “Jake and the Fat Man,” and also was greatly in demand for narration.

Conrad estimated that he played more than 7,500 roles during his radio career, including providing the voice of Marshal Matt Dillon in the radio version of 'Gunsmoke'.   At KMPC L-A, the 22-year-old Conrad produced and acted in The Hermit's Cave (circa 1940–44), the Los Angeles incarnation of a popular syndicated horror anthology series created at WJR Detroit

In January 1956, Conrad was the announcer on the debut broadcast of The CBS Radio Workshop, a two-part adaptation of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World which Huxley himself narrated.

➦In 2012…singer Whitney Houston  was found dead submerged in her bath tub at a posh LA hotel.  Cause of death was a lethal combination of prescription drugs and liquor. She was 48. An L-A Coroner's report concluded Houston drowned accidentally and autopsy results revealed heart disease.  Chronic cocaine use was a contributing factor.

➦In 2013...Tom Aspell, a veteran foreign correspondent for NBC News, died after a two-year battle with lung cancer at age 62.

Bob Simon - 2010
➦In 2015…Bob Simon, the longtime “60 Minutes” correspondent and legendary CBS News foreign reporter died when the limo he was in was involved in a car accident in New York City, at age 73.  He was one of a handful of elite journalists who had covered the important news events of the late 1960’s to the present.
