D/FW Radio: Urban One Tweaks Programming On Three Stations

Urban One Dallas is realigning programming across its three Dallas-Fort Worth stations, returning Rickey Smiley to mornings at KBFB (97.9 The Beat), shifting lineups at KKDA (K104), and giving 105.7 KRNB a new music direction.

  • At 97.9 The Beat, Radio Hall of Famer Smiley will anchor mornings beginning at 5 a.m. Jazzi Black will handle middays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by Bryhana Monegain in afternoon drive. “Posted on the Corner with Incognito and DJ Misses” will air in evenings.
  • KRNB is introducing what Urban One calls a new audio identity built on a mix of R&B from the 1990s, 2000s and today. Vice President and General Manager Maurice Potts said the rebranding is meant to create a stronger connection with listeners while delivering the music and personalities they want.
  • K104 will continue with DeDe McGuire and “DeDe in the Morning” in mornings. Michael Shawn moves to middays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Hollywood Bay Bay takes afternoon drive, and Lil D shifts to evenings.

Yonni Rude
Operations Manager Yonni Rude said the changes strengthen Radio One Dallas’s ability to serve the Metroplex with entertainment, personalities and content that connect with audiences. Potts said the moves are intended to better reflect the cluster’s audience and the direction of its brands, and to keep the stations fresh and relevant.

Smiley first hosted mornings on KBFB around 2003–2005. The show took off in Dallas-Fort Worth, entered syndication in 2008, and left The Beat in 2017 when the station went local in mornings. He came back to the market on adult R&B Majic 94.5 (KZMJ) after succeeding Tom Joyner. In July 2026, as Urban One sold KZMJ and closed on K104 and KRNB, the syndicated Rickey Smiley Morning Show moved to The Beat, starting at 5 a.m. on July 6. He is a 2026 Radio Hall of Fame inductee, a two-time Marconi winner for syndicated personality, and under a five-year Urban One extension signed in March. The show airs on roughly 70 to 90 affiliates.

Urban One acquired KRNB and KKDA as part of its expansion in Dallas-Fort Worth and says it continues to build a multimedia platform aimed at the market’s urban music audience.
