Jim Nantz said Tony Romo will “unquestionably” work again in broadcasting after the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS Sports mutually parted ways earlier this month.
In his first public comments on the split, Nantz spoke on the “Traina Thoughts” podcast with Jimmy Traina. “I think unquestionably he will work again,” Nantz said. “I don’t know if it’s calling games or being in studio, but he’s got a lot of talent. He’s got a lot of people who like him, and he’s a star. He’s got a personality that, it’s different, and that’s a good thing. He’s a bigger-than-life personality.”

Nantz, who partnered with Romo in CBS’s top NFL booth for nine seasons, added that he does not know where Romo’s head is right now and declined to speculate further. “I think that you’re asking me: ‘Will he ever work again in the business?’ I think there will be plenty of opportunity for that because he’s got game,” he said.
Nantz emphasized that he had “no role” in the network’s decision, which he said rested with CBS Sports and its president, David Berson. “I think that’s the way it had to be,” he said. He learned of the Oct. 2 parting while in Las Vegas preparing to call a Chiefs-Raiders game and immediately checked on Romo “as a friend.” “I know the support system he has at home, and I look forward to Tony coming through this — and he will,” Nantz said. He also noted that “no one can defend” Romo’s decision to drive under the influence.
CBS and Romo announced they had “mutually agreed to part ways” on Oct. 2, roughly two months after Romo’s July 23 arrest in Milwaukee on suspicion of operating while intoxicated. Romo, who pleaded no contest in September, was placed on indefinite leave shortly after the arrest; J.J. Watt has since taken over as the lead analyst alongside Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson for the remainder of the 2026 season.
