CNN’s Clarissa Ward Signs One-Year Deal Amid Merger Uncertainty

CNN star foreign correspondent Clarissa Ward agreed to only a one-year contract extension with the network, in part because she and other prominent journalists are worried that Bari Weiss could gain influence over CNN through a proposed Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger, according to a report published Wednesday.

The limited deal comes despite CNN CEO Mark Thompson being “eager” to renew Ward’s contract for a longer term, Status newsletter editor Oliver Darcy reported. Ward’s one-year agreement essentially buys time to see how the potential merger unfolds before committing further.

Ward is not the only high-profile CNN journalist who hesitated over the merger speculation. Paula Reid, the network’s former chief legal affairs correspondent, also declined to renew her contract for the same reason.

Beyond merger fears, Ward has clashed with network leadership over editorial strategy. She has pushed for more digital initiatives, including hosting a podcast, but executives have “not enthusiastically engaged” on those ideas, Darcy added.

As CNN’s chief international correspondent, Ward is one of the network’s most visible and respected journalists, known for her on-the-ground reporting from global hotspots. Her decision to accept a short-term deal highlights broader anxiety inside the network as it navigates ownership uncertainty, leadership changes, and shifting priorities in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
