NYC Gunman May Have Had NFL Grudge

Slain NYPD Officer Didarul Islam

UPDATE 9:35 AM:   What is now known regarding the mass shooting that occurred on Monday evening, July 28, 2025, at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York City:

On July 28, 2025, at approximately 6:28 p.m. EDT, 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura, a Las Vegas resident, entered the 44-story skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue, armed with an M4 rifle and wearing body armor. He killed four people, including an NYPD officer, and critically wounded another before dying by suicide on the 33rd floor. The building houses the NFL headquarters, Blackstone, KPMG, and Rudin Management offices.

Victims:
  • Wesley LePatner
    NYPD Officer Didarul Islam:
A 36-year-old officer from the 47th Precinct in the Bronx, killed while working an off-duty paid security detail. An immigrant from Bangladesh, he was a three-and-a-half-year veteran, leaving behind a pregnant wife and two young sons. Mayor Eric Adams called him a “true blue hero.”
  • Wesley LePatner: A Blackstone executive, confirmed dead by the company. Described as “brilliant, passionate, warm, generous,” she leaves behind a husband and children.
  • Other Victims: The identities of the other two deceased victims, a man and a woman, have not been released pending family notification. A fifth victim, an NFL employee, was critically injured but is now in stable condition after surgery. Four others sustained minor injuries while fleeing.
Shane Devon Tamura, born in Hawaii and later a Las Vegas resident, had a documented history of mental health issues, as confirmed by Las Vegas authorities. He had no significant criminal record, only minor charges like trespassing and traffic violations. He held a valid Nevada concealed carry permit and an expired private investigator license.

Tamura drove cross-country from Las Vegas, passing through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey, arriving in New York City on July 28. His black BMW, double-parked outside the building, contained a rifle case, a loaded revolver, ammunition, a backpack, and prescription medication.

A three-page note found on Tamura referenced chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease linked to head trauma, and expressed grievances against the NFL, stating, “You can’t go against the NFL, they’ll squash you.” He requested his brain be studied and mentioned a former NFL player, Terry Long, who died by suicide in 2005 after a CTE diagnosis. Tamura, a former high school football player in Southern California, believed he suffered from CTE, though this cannot be confirmed until a post-mortem examination.

The NYPD and FBI are investigating Tamura’s motives, focusing on the note suggesting a possible link to his belief about CTE and his anger toward the NFL. It remains unclear why he targeted 345 Park Avenue or why he went to the 33rd floor, where Rudin Management’s offices are located, instead of the NFL’s fifth-floor headquarters. Mayor Adams noted Tamura may have taken the wrong elevator.

Tamura entered the lobby, immediately shot Officer Islam, then fired at a woman behind a pillar and a security guard near the elevator bank. He spared a woman exiting an elevator, then took it to the 33rd floor, where he killed another person before shooting himself in the chest.

UPDATE 7:45 AM:  The gunman who killed an NYPD officer and three other people in a Midtown office building on Monday evening was carrying a note in his pocket that expressed grievances with the NFL and claimed he suffered from CTE – a brain injury linked to head trauma, according to sources.

Earlier Story...

A lone gunman stormed a prominent Midtown Manhattan skyscraper at 345 Park Ave. Monday edvening, home to the NFL headquarters and major financial firms, during rush hour, fatally shooting at least four people, including an NYPD officer, before taking his own life, authorities reported.  New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that police received multiple active shooter reports. Surveillance footage captured the suspect exiting a vehicle and entering the building with an M4 rifle. He immediately fired at an NYPD officer on a paid security detail, then shot a woman hiding behind a pillar, continuing to fire throughout the lobby.

The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, killed four people, including an NYPD officer, and critically injured at least one other before taking his own life.

The attack began around 6:30 p.m. during the evening rush. Tamura, armed with an M4 or AR-15-style rifle equipped with a silencer, scope, and strap, entered the building’s lobby and immediately opened fire. He killed NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh, who was working a private security detail for Rudin Management, the building’s owner. Tamura also shot a woman hiding behind a pillar and a security guard at the elevator bank. He allowed a woman to exit an elevator unharmed before taking it to the 33rd floor, where he killed another person and then shot himself in the chest.

Three civilians were killed, with their identities not immediately released. One additional victim was critically injured, and four others sustained minor injuries while fleeing.

An NFL employee was seriously injured but stable, as confirmed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Shooter’s Background: Tamura had a documented history of mental health issues and a concealed carry permit from Nevada, valid until 2027. He was a former high school football player and had recently been fired from a security guard position at a Las Vegas casino.
Papers found on his body suggested grievances with the NFL, possibly related to its handling of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease linked to repeated head trauma, though his exact motives remain unclear.

Tamura drove cross-country from Las Vegas, with his BMW tracked through Colorado (July 26), Nebraska, Iowa, and Columbia, New Jersey (4:24 p.m. on Monday), before arriving in New York City.

Police found a rifle case, a loaded revolver, ammunition, magazines, a backpack, and medication prescribed to Tamura in his vehicle.

The shooting caused chaos in Midtown, with multiple 911 calls at 6:28 p.m. reporting an active shooter. NYPD locked down the area, evacuated workers (some with hands raised), and advised the public to avoid Park Avenue and 52nd Street.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the lone shooter was neutralized, and there was no ongoing threat. Mayor Eric Adams called the attack “senseless” and visited the injured.

Two individuals were arrested outside the building, including one shouting “Free Palestine, I’m not the shooter,” though their involvement, if any, is unclear.
