Edison: More Republicans Now Using X/Twitter

Edison Research is gearing up to host one of its marquee annual events, The Infinite Dial 2025, this Thursday, where it will reveal the latest insights into digital consumer behavior. Backed by prominent industry leaders like Audacy, Cumulus Media, and SiriusXM Media, the report upholds its legacy since 1998 of delivering detailed updates on the ever-changing digital landscape.

The upcoming webinar will explore the newest trends in podcast listening, online audio consumption, and significant shifts in social media engagement. This year’s Infinite Dial arrives at a pivotal moment, particularly in light of Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter—now X—and its influence on user demographics.

The study highlights a clear evolution in X’s user base. In 2023, 34% of Democrats, 28% of Independents, and 20% of Republicans were active users. By 2024, usage among Democrats and Independents had noticeably dropped, a decline that leveled off in 2025. The latest figures show a resurgence, especially among Republicans, with usage climbing from 21% to 25%. Meanwhile, Democrat usage edged up to 22%, and Independents held steady at 21%.

X/Twitter Usage by Party Affiliation

This shift marks a dramatic change from a 14-point Democratic lead in 2023 to a slim three-point Republican edge in 2025, underscoring a substantial transformation in X’s audience composition.

The webinar, featuring Edison Research’s Megan Lazovick and Podnews’s James Cridland, remains open for registration. Industry professionals and curious observers are invited to attend for a deeper dive into these dynamic digital trends.
