8/28 WAKE-UP CALL: Tropical Storm Idalia To Intensify

Tropical Storm Idalia, which formed on Sunday, was expected to strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane by the time it reaches Florida’s Gulf Coast on Tuesday in what forecasters said would be a “very significant and impactful hurricane.” Winds were predicted to reach a peak of 100 miles per hour, Jamie Rhome, deputy director of the National Hurricane Center, said in an update on Sunday evening. “Evacuations may be necessary for this storm later today or tomorrow,” Mr. Rhome said.

“The hazards absolutely will extend beyond the cone,” he added, referring to the forecast maps showing the storm’s potential path. “Do not focus exclusively on the cone to determine your risk.” Idalia, the latest named storm of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, also threatens to bring heavy rains to Georgia and the Carolinas, forecasters said.

The Hurricane Center noted in an advisory on Sunday that from Tuesday into Wednesday, parts of the west coast of Florida, the Florida Panhandle and southern Georgia could get up to six inches of rain, with higher isolated totals of 10 inches. Heavy rainfall was also expected to spread into portions of the Carolinas Wednesday into Thursday, the center said.

It's the weather prediction your community doesn't want to hear: Jim Cantore is on the way. Cantore, the meteorologist known for heading to the heart of where a storm disaster is about to happen, confirmed Sunday night that he indeed is coming to Florida on Monday ahead of what's expected to become Hurricane Idalia. But where? That's to be determined.

➤RACIAL HATRED RESULTS IN 3 DEATHS: A white man wearing a mask and carrying a gun painted with a swastika killed three Black people inside a Dollar General store on Saturday in what authorities described as a racially motivated attack in a predominantly African-American neighborhood. Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said the attack was racially motivated by the shooter, who entered the store shortly after 1 p.m. and opened fire. The gunman, who wore a tactical vest while carrying an "AR-style" rifle and a handgun bearing a swastika, targeted two men and a woman. The suspect then shot and killed himself at the store. Although others were fired upon inside and outside the store, Waters said no one else was injured in the attack. "He hated Black people," Waters said after reviewing racist writings the gunman had left for his family, federal law enforcement and at least one media outlet. The shooting occurred at a Dollar General store in New Town, a predominantly Black neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida. The store is also near Edward Waters University, a small historically Black university with about 1,000 students.

The gunman was identified as Ryan Palmeter, 21, police confirmed on Sunday as they also detailed a manifesto he left behind as the 'diary of a madman.' Palmeter used an assault rifle covered in Nazi swastikas in the deadly assault on Saturday before turning the gun on himself, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Sheriff T.K. Waters said the gunman 'hated black people' and 'wanted to kill 'n******'.' He described the shooting as a 'dark day in Jacksonville's history'. Palmeter left his home at 11:39am for Jacksonville and texted his father to check his computer. His horrified parents then called the sheriff's office at 1.53pm to report the manifesto they found but he had already begun his assault. He was reportedly involved in a 2016 domestic call with no arrest and was held under the state's Baker Act in 2017 which allows people to be involuntarily detained and subject to an examination for up to 72 hours in a mental health hospital.

➤2 PEOPLE DIED AND 6 WERE INJURED IN A DOWNTOWN LOUISVILLE SHOOTING: Two people are dead after a total of six people were shot overnight Sunday at a downtown Louisville lounge. Several people were shot around 3 a.m., LMPD said one man was pronounced dead at the scene. Five of the six victims were taken to UofL Hospital. Four victims, three women, and another man, are all recovering from what police call non-life-threatening injuries. The fifth died later.

➤DEATH CONFIRMED: Russia officially confirmed the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Wagner paramilitary-group boss who controlled a vast business empire in Africa and led a short-lived rebellion against the country’s defense establishment before being killed in a plane crash Wednesday. The country’s Investigative Committee said Sunday that genetic testing had confirmed the identities of all 10 passengers who died aboard the Embraer Legacy 600 jet that plunged from the skies over the Tver region. The day after the plane went down, U.S. officials said preliminary evidence suggested the plane crashed as the result of an assassination plot but wasn’t shot down by a surface-to-air missile as some sources close to Wagner had said.

➤UKRAINE LOSES 'JUICE': Charismatic, decorated Ukrainian fighter pilot Andriy "Juice" Pilshchykov was one of three pilots killed in the midair collision of two L-39 military jets in northwest Ukraine, authorities said. Details of Friday's crash were not immediately released. A driving force behind Ukraine's effort to obtain F-16 fighter jets, Pilshchykov was fluent in English and frequently interviewed with Western media. Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat described Pilshchykov as a "young officer with mega knowledge and mega talent." Ihnat credited Pilshchykov, recipient of the prestigious Order of Courage, with leading multiple reforms in the Air Force.  "I have often supported his crazy ideas, which yielded incredible results," Ihnat wrote in a Facebook post.

➤TRUMP RAISED $7.1 MILLION SINCE HE WAS BOOKED AT ATLANTA JAIL: Former President Donald Trump has raised nearly $20 million in the past three weeks, a period that roughly coincides with his indictment in federal and state cases connected to his false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him, Trump's campaign spokesman said on Saturday. Since appearing Thursday to have his mug shot taken in a racketeering and fraud case in Atlanta, Georgia, the former president brought in $7.1 million, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

➤3 U.S. MARINES KILLED IN OSPREY AIRCRAFT CRASH IN AUSTRALIA: At least three U.S. Marines were killed Sunday when an Osprey aircraft carrying 23 personnel crashed on a north Australian island during a training exercise, U.S. military officials said. Five others were transported to a local hospital in serious condition. Northern Territory Chief Minister Natasha Fyles said Sunday morning that an emergency response was underway to triage the victims and take them to local hospitals. ⚾LLWS CHAMPIONSHIP..WEST 6 CARRIBBEAN 5: Louis Lappe hit a walk-off homer and California beat Curacao 6-5 in the Little League World Series championship on Sunday, despite giving up a four-run lead. Louis flipped his bat and threw his arms in the air as he trotted around the bases, leaping onto home plate before he was greeted by his teammates surrounding the batter's box. The leadoff hitter in the bottom of the sixth inning, Louis lofted the second pitch he saw just beyond the left field fence. Curacao tied the game in the fifth on Nasir El-Ossais's grand slam to center. Nasir also drove in a run in the third.

⚾YANKEES NEED THE LITTLE MARTIAN: A last-place team needs a reason for optimism, and the New York Yankees have exactly that in 20-year-old outfield prospect Jasson Dominguez. Nicknamed 'El Marciano' (Spanish for 'the Martian') for his otherworldly talent, the Dominican native was promoted to Triple-A earlier this week, where he's continued his torrid pace from Double-A Somerset. In just seven games with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, Dominguez has 11 hits in 23 at-bats (.478 average) with 10 RBIs and four walks. Best of all, he's doubled twice and on Sunday he tripled, giving him 11 total bases in less than a week of work. The sizzling stretch, however brief, could lead to a September call-up to the Bronx, where the Yankees are quickly fading into irrelevance. Losers of 12 of their last 14.

NASCAR driver Ryan Preece was discharged from the hospital on Sunday after his car rolled more than half a dozen times during a crash at Daytona International Speedway. Preece, driver of the #41 RaceChoice.com Ford, and fellow Stewart-Haas Racing driver Chase Briscoe, driver of the #14 Magical Vacation Planner Ford, had an on-track incident on Saturday.  Video shows Preece's car flip through the air before it landed. The car appeared to be on fire when it finally stopped rolling.
Preece was able to get out of the car by himself. He was brought to the Halifax Health Medical Center, where he stayed through the night, Stewart-Haas Racing said on social media Sunday. Preece was "awake, alert, mobile" and communicating with family and friends, the team said.
