R.I.P.: Edgardo del Villar, Telemundo News Anchor

Edgardo del Villar, a popular anchor for the Telemundo news station serving New York City, died Sunday at age 51 following a two-year battle with brain cancer.

The NY Daily News reports his death was confirmed by the news station he worked for, WNJU.

“Edgardo del Villar was a talented journalist and gifted storyteller with a smile that lit up the screen,” the station’s president and general manager, Cristina Schwarz, said in a statement, according to NBC New York.

“We stood in awe as he fought an incurable disease with remarkable resolve; pushing himself to the limits, returning to the air throughout his treatment and remaining positive and upbeat through it all,” Schwarz continued. “He was our inspiration and we loved him.”

Del Villar was surrounded by his family, including his wife Carolina, at the time of his death, according to NBC News.

The broadcaster, who began working for WNJU in 2017, was part of the channel’s 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts.
