Nashville Radio: After A Month, George Plaster EXITS WSM-AM

George Plaster
George Plaster said Tuesday that he has parted ways with WSM 650 AM, the country music station that launched his weekday afternoon call-in drive show "Sports Night" on July 15.
Plaster had resigned as associate athletics director at Belmont in the spring in order to start the new show.

Plaster now plans to start a podcast, reports The Tenneassean.

"We made the decision to part ways," Plaster said. "My intention is to put together some sort of a podcast with the hope of launching around Labor Day."

Plaster declined to go into any further details about the reason for his quick departure.

"WSM has decided to end SportsNight with George Plaster," Ryman Hospitality Properties, owner of WSM radio, said in a release. "We are evaluating our options for this time slot, and in the meantime, we are looking forward to providing alternative programming for our listeners."

After a news and weather update at 3 p.m. Tuesday, WSM returned to playing country music in the time slot Plaster's show previously occupied.

The new show was a return to radio for Plaster, who had spent 39 years on the air before accepting the position at Belmont in 2016.

While still at Belmont, Plaster hosted a Sunday show on WSM from July 2017 until his new show began last month.

Plaster, a Battle Ground Academy and Vanderbilt graduate, started his first sports talk show in 1989 on WWTN-FM 99.7. He moved to WGFX-FM 104.5 in 2003 where he was the sports director and host of the highly-rated "Sports Zone" show from 3-6 p.m. for many years. Plaster moved to 102.5-FM The Game in 2012 to host a show in the same time slot.
