Springfield MO Radio: Longtime AM Host Woody P. Snow Retires

Woody P. Snow
After more than 40 years on air, Springfield, MO radio personality Woody P. Snow has retired, according to the News-Leader.

"I can't believe I got away with it all these years," he said, laughing. "It beats working. I've enjoyed all of it."

For the past two years, Snow and and co-host Page Miller were on air 5-10 a.m. at KTXR 101.3 FM. But his career began in 1971 at KICK in Springfield. He did stints at stations in Miami, Salt Lake City and Boston — but always returned to Springfield.

"I like it here," he said. "To my knowledge, I've logged more hours on the airwaves here in Springfield than any other broadcaster."

Though last Friday was his last broadcast as a full-time host, Snow's former boss and owner of Meyer Communications, Kenneth Meyer, persuaded Snow to return on Friday mornings for a brief bit on topics of Snow's choosing.

Meyer said Mike Roberts will be taking Snow's place on the morning show.

Snow, who recently moved to his farm near Fordland, said he'll stay busy with his writing, painting and farming.

Music trivia buffs should note that Snow (as Jay Stevens) wrote "Rocky". In 1975, it was Dickey Lee's most successful single on the country charts, becoming his only number one on the country chart. The single stayed at number one for a single week and spent a total of fourteen weeks on the country chart.

Other versions were recorded by Austin Roberts (1975) and Orion (1979). Austin Roberts' version reached number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975.
