R.I.P.: Longtime Austin Personality Larry Lee Monroe

Legendary Broadcaster and Popular Radio Personality Larry Lee Monroe, 71, passed away at 4:34 a.m. Friday, January 17, 2014 at St. David's South Austin Hospital.

He was 71 according to thestarpress.com.

He was born in Hartford City on August 29, 1942 to the late Lawrence E. Monroe and the late Thelma L. (Burchard) Monroe.

Larry graduated from Hartford City High School in 1960. He graduated from Ball State University in 1965. He started his career in radio during his high school days and took classes in communications at Ball State.

After graduating from college he moved to San Francisco, then to Indianapolis, then to Ann Arbor, Michigan and lastly to Austin, Texas to follow his career in radio.

Larry had been working since 2011 at KDRP Radio Station in Austin, Texas, where he hosted three popular shows, his signature program Blue Monday, Live in the Oak Garden and The Phil Music Program.

He had formerly been a deejay for the KUT Radio for twenty-nine years. He won a national award for keeping the blues alive in Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee. He was voted Most Popular Deejay in Austin, Texas. "He was a pillar of both the Austin and music worlds - a renowned on-air personality, a musician's advocate, and a dear friend."
