Digital Radio Listeners To Pass 50% In 2014

More than one in five Americans will listen to music on their mobile phones this year, eMarketer estimates, after usage nearly doubled in 2012. Listening to music on their phones is now a regular activity for more than 70 million people in the US, and double-digit growth is expected to continue through 2015, when well over a third of all mobile phone users will participate.

Included in this figure are mobile phone users who listen to streaming music, such as via Pandora, Spotify or another digital radio station, as well as those who download music directly onto their phone, via the iTunes Store or a similar service. eMarketer’s forecast does not include listeners who only sideload music from their PC to their phone.

Report: Nielsen, Abritron Merger Hits Bump In The Road

TV ratings giant Nielsen is running into rising regulatory static over its $1.26 billion deal for Arbriton, the dominant radio measurement firm.

Rather than wrapping up its months-long review of the deal as expected, the Federal Trade Commission is busy sending out additional requests for information, The NYPost has learned.

The latest round of questionnaires went out to TV station owners that stand to be affected by the merger of the two measurement giants, according to sources.

The FTC will decide whether to let the deal go through or move to block it. It could also enter into a settlement with Nielsen, in which the company agrees to divest assets or make other changes to win approval for the deal.

Nielsen said at the end of July that it expects to have an indication of where the merger stands by the end of this month. Nielsen CEO David Calhoun, speaking on a call with investors, said the company had complied with the FTC’s latest request for information and was just awaiting a signal.

The FTC has already held up the deal once after issuing a second request for information on March 8. After the companies comply with the request, the FTC has 30 days to complete its review and take action.

In December, Nielsen reached a deal to buy Arbitron for $48 a share, or $1.26 billion. It also agreed to pay a $131 million breakup fee — more than 10 percent of the purchase price — should the deal fail to pass regulatory muster.

Station Owner Protests Arbitron Policy Change

Gary E. Burns
Owner and CEO of 3 Daughters Media stations Gary Burns of Lynchburg, VA.  is taking his protest of a new Arbitron policy up a notch.

Arbitron plans to make its Total Line Reporting, in which the ratings of simulcast stations are combined into one number, for subscribers-only beginning in 2014. Under the updated policy, only licensed subscribing stations “in good standing” will be eligible to combine audiences for their stations and Internet streams that are 100% simulcast on a single reporting line in Arbitron ratings reports and data services.

Burns recently protested the change to Arbitron CEO Sean Creamer, saying the change will result in a different application ratings methodology for stations in the same survey and will change the station rankings. “Stations most likely to incur damages as a result of this new policy are stations with limited coverage, stations owned by small business and minorities. Measurement of radio listening in metro markets should be subject to the same methodology and rules for every station qualified to be in the measured market,” said Burns in a letter he shared with Radio World.

Now, Burns has taken his concerns to the FCC, the DOJ and the FTC.

Specifically, he’s saying the planned acquisition of Arbitron by Nielsen “will have unintended consequences in the marketplace.” As the DOJ and FTC review that deal, Burns asks the regulators to require “all measured entities be treated equally” without regard to whether such a company is an Arbitron subscriber and to consider “all of the other ramifications of the merger” before allowing the pending $1.26 billion transaction to close.

3 Daughters Media currently owns 7 stations in Virginia and Tennesee.

Albany Radio: Former Yankees OF Victim Of Hoax

Mike Lindsley
Former Yankees outfielder Shane Spencer issued a statement Tuesday saying a person who called an Albany radio station the previous day posing as him — and admitting to “dabbling” with steroids — was an imposter.

“In response to an interview that (WTMM The Team) ESPN Radio 104.5 FM host Mike Lindsley claims to have done with me on (Monday) afternoon, I would like to set the record straight that I did not participate in any such interview,” said Spencer, who now serves as the hitting coach and third base coach for the Somerset Patriots in the independent Atlantic League.
“Someone called into the station claiming to be me and spoke on my behalf regarding some very sensitive topics surrounding baseball. This caller spoke as me about topics ranging from steroids, to my time with the New York Yankees, Roger Clemens and my feelings about the great Mariano Rivera. I am outraged that someone would do this and at the same time disappointed that the station believed it to be me despite not coming from the contact information they had for me.”
Spencer, who played for the Yankees from 1998-2002 and for the Mets in 2004, added that he heard about the alleged interview from friends, family members, former teammates and fans the past two days.

Pittsburgh Radio: Pete Rose Apologizes For Radio Comments

Pete Rose
It’s not often Pete Rose says he’s sorry, but baseball’s all-time hit king has done so in the wake of his candid comments regarding his banishment from baseball.

During a radio interview with John Phillips of KDKA-FM 93.7The Fan in Pittsburgh, Rose was asked if he felt a 2nd chance would come his way and his reinstatement to the game of baseball could happen.

According to the station website, Rose told Phillips
“I made mistakes. I can’t whine about it. I’m the one that messed up and I’m paying the consequences. However, if I am given a second chance, I won’t need a third chance. And to be honest with you, I picked the wrong vice. I should have picked alcohol. I should have picked drugs or I should have picked up beating up my wife or girlfriend because if you do those three, you get a second chance. They haven’t given too many gamblers a second chances in the world of baseball.”
Since airing those comments, Rose has come under fire for the ‘beating up my wife or girlfriend’ part of what he said.

In a rare Mea culpa, Rose has issued a statement apologizing.

From Pete Rose:
“If I’ve learned anything over the past 24 years since my banishment from baseball, it’s to own up to my failures right away. I was feeling sorry for myself when I compared my vice to others, including abuse and drinking. Of course, all vices are not to be excused. I know gambling almost destroyed baseball and I have accepted the way Commissioners Giamatti, Vincent and Selig acted toward me.”
Rose has been serving a lifetime ban since 1989 for gambling on the Reds.
