The UpClose Performance Studio will feature a multi-camera HD Video system for streaming and podcasting, so that listeners will be able to enjoy the performances online, either on their computer or mobile device.  Additionally, the studio will permanently house a full complement of high-end instruments, including drums, keyboard, guitars and amps, allowing musical artists to perform without having to bring their own equipment.

A theater-style all-LED professional lighting system is being installed by Showtime Sound of Frederick, Maryland, responsible for stage lighting for a number of recent performance tours, including Louis C.K., Amy Schumer, and Kevin Hart.

“Our UpClose Performance Studio is a great way to extend our reach into the community,” said Robert Philips, Senior Vice President/Market Manager of CBS RADIO Baltimore.  “We’re looking forward to providing our listeners with this unique opportunity to hear, see and meet some of their favorite artists in an exclusive and intimate setting.”

Actress Tara Reid Walks-off Jenny McCarthy's SiriusXM Show

Jenny McCarthy, Tara Reid
Actress Tara Reid walked out of a radio interview with Jenny McCarthy on Friday after the SiriusXM host pressed her about plastic surgery and other personal topics. The actress told Gossip Cop that she felt “bullied” by McCarthy, who Reid also says acted “unprofessional.”

Reid was on the radio show to promote her upcoming SyFy channel movie, Sharknado 4: The 4th Awakens, but McCarthy was more interested in the actress’s recent appearance on the TV Reality Show “Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars.”

“The whole thing is absolutely so stupid and silly,” Reid told McCarthy of the reality show, adding, “It’s not worth the time to talk about.” McCarthy, however, went on to ask Reid if she was either “pissed off” at the show or regretted doing it, to which Reid said, “Babe, I asked you, please let’s not talk about the show. We’re all here about Sharknado.”

After asking just one question pertaining to Sharknado, McCarthy then began grilling Reid about her past plastic surgeries. “I haven’t had any surgery for a while,” noted the frustrated actress, but the host followed up by saying, “So you’re good and done not moving forward with plastic surgery?” “I think I made that clear like a hundred times,” shot back Reid, who was getting increasingly annoyed by the line of questioning.

From there, Reid and McCarthy began trading veiled insults at each other, with McCarthy telling the actress, “I hope you stay married,” and referencing her supposed “wobbly knees.” Pointing out McCarthy’s own cosmetic enhancement, Reid shot back, “I hope your t*ts got even nicer,” before storming out of the studio.

28% Considered ‘Strong’ Early Adopters Of Technology

Technology is changing the ways people seek and get knowledge, communicate and work.

But Americans still tend to embrace familiarity over newness when it comes to their choices of new products, according to a new analysis of Pew Research Center survey data.

Overall, 52% of adults say they “feel more comfortable using familiar brands and products,” and 39% describe themselves as preferring to wait until they hear about others’ experiences before trying something new themselves. Similarly, 39% say they prefer their “tried and trusted” brands.

But 35% of Americans say they like the variety of trying new products, and three-in-ten like being able to tell others about their experiences with new technology. About one-in-six adults (15%) say they usually try technology products before others do.

Using people’s answers to these six questions, Pew Research Center created an “early adopter index” that classifies Americans’ preferences for new technology products or familiar ones into three tiers: strong, medium and weak. Some 28% of Americans hold strong preferences for being early adopters and trying new technology products, 45% score at or near the mean of the index, and 26% score low on the index, indicating a stronger preference for familiar technology products.

Baltimore Radio:NFL Ravens Extend Broadcast Deal With Hearst

The Baltimore Ravens have announced a new six-year partnership that will keep Hearst-owned News Radio WBAL 1090 AM and WIYY 97.9 fM 98 Rock as the Flagship Home of the Baltimore Ravens through the 2022 season.

Under the extended contract, WBAL-TV will continue to serve as an official broadcast partner by televising preseason games and three weekly, in-season programs created by the team's in-house broadcasting group, Ravens Productions. The new deal officially begins in 2017 as an extension of the previous relationship that was agreed upon from 2011-2016. It also marks the second contract extension between the Ravens and the broadcast organizations, following an initial agreement that was first established in 2006.

"WBAL-TV, 98 Rock and WBAL News Radio 1090 are thrilled to continue as the Official Television and Radio Broadcast Partners of the Baltimore Ravens," Dan Joerres, President and General Manager of WBAL-TV, and Cary Pahigian, President and General Manager of WBAL-AM and WIYY-FM, said in a joint statement. "Our partnership is amongst the strongest in the NFL, and we intend to make it even stronger on all of our market-leading platforms."

"The Ravens are pleased to extend our partnership with Hearst, WBAL-TV, 98 Rock and WBAL-AM," said Kevin Rochlitz, the Ravens' Senior Vice President of Corporate Sales and Business Development. "Hearst is a highly-respected company, and we know this relationship allows us an opportunity to further connect with our fanbase."

SB Nation, Gow Media Ink Radio Partnership

SB Nation, Vox Media Inc.’s online site for sports fans, is expanding into radio through a partnership with Gow Media LLC, which is ditching its Yahoo Sports Radio brand.

According to Bloomberg, the new SB Nation Radio will create audio programming that will be available at SBNation.com and go out to 500 terrestrial and satellite stations affiliated with Gow, the companies said Monday in a statement. Content also will be carried on Sirius XM Holdings Inc. and other platforms, they said.

SB Nation’s sports coverage includes national and 300 team-specific sites, such as the Los Angeles Dodgers-focused truebluela.com, featuring news and commentary, podcasts and even shopping. Gow Media, which operates as Yahoo Sports Radio, will transition to the SB Nation Radio name on Aug. 1. Together, the companies estimate they could reach as many as 90 million people a month.

“It’s a terrific opportunity to grow our brand and awareness of our brand via radio and via this relationship,” said Kevin Lockland, vice president of editorial operations at SB Nation. The company hopes to “gain additional exposure for a lot of the talented national and team-specific voices that we have across the SB Nation network.”

The companies want to become leaders in sports podcasting, according to Lockland and David Gow, chief executive officer of Houston-based Gow Media. The two can “create audio content that is younger, faster paced, digitally savvy,” Gow said in an interview.

“This is a big deal for us to position ourselves in an industry that has longstanding old traditional brands and come out and say we are not your grandfather’s sports radio network,” Gow said. “We’re SB Nation and we’re going to be different.”

SB Nation is one of Vox Media’s eight brands, the first to get into radio, and part of a lineup that include The Verge, Polygon for gaming and Curbed, a real-estate focused site. Gow, which has been operating as Yahoo Sports Radio since 2011, owns two sports talk radio stations in Houston.

Is Shari Redstone Pushing A Viacom-CBS Remerger?

Vanity Fair composite
The NY Post is reporting Massachusetts Judge George Phelan is on the verge of a decision about whether Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman can overturn his ouster from the Sumner Redstone family trust and the National Amusements Inc. board, and keep his current position.

Phelan’s decision will have a strong influence on how controlling shareholder Shari Redstone plays her poker hand.

The master plan is obvious to The Post's Claire Atkinson: Install a new Viacom board and dump Dauman to stop a selloff of Paramount, which is viewed as a poison pill against a potential acquisition of Viacom by an outside company.

In addition to being open to a sale, the National Amusements team is game-planning a remerger with CBS. In the past, CBS Chief Executive Leslie Moonves has been highly vocal about his distaste for such a move. But he didn’t say anything of the sort at the recent Allen & Co. mogul retreat. Our sources say Moonves is not quite so against it as he was.

“Never say never,” said an associate. The question is, can Shari Redstone make it happen regardless?

Putting the two entities back together is a no-brainer, as Rich Greenfield of BTIG notes: “If Viacom doesn’t have a shield, they’re at risk,” meaning distributors could be tempted to drop its channels. “Everybody needs a shield, but CBS isn’t shielding anyone.”

Report: Trace Adkins Spoils St. Jude's Hospital Fundraiser

Trace Adkins
Country singer Trace Adkins was reportedly drunk at a charity performance last Wednesday night in New Jersey.

According to video obtained by TMZ, the "Lit" singer appears to slur his way through three songs at the fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The performance was seemingly so bad, concertgoers reportedly left before the end of the show.

According to FOX411, Adkins was the headliner for the Rockin' Country WKMK 106.3 FM (Eatentown NJ) Thunder 106 "Guys With Guitars Under the Stars" benefit concert in Seaside Heights, NJ. Attendees said the singer was clearly in no state to perform.

"Praying for him to overcome his demons because he is a talented man. However, coming on stage in the condition he did, and singing ['Whoop a Man's A--'] in front of children at a St Jude's concert was disrespectful to the foundation and the kids," someone commented on Thunder 106's Facebook page.

The radio station's program director Chris VanZant wrote on Facebook, "Apparently we have one of our country music family who needs our love, support and understanding. I hope you'll take a moment and send a positive thought, support and prayer."

As for Wednesday night, TMZ reports St. Jude's got a windfall. Trace donated his performance fee to the hospital.

The 54-year-old has a history with alcohol-related problems. He most recently checked himself into rehab in 2014.

R.I.P. Bonnie Brown Of The Browns

Bonnie Brown
Bonnie Brown, a 2015 inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame as part of sweet-voiced sibling trio The Browns, died Saturday afternoon in Little Rock, Ark., due to complications from lung cancer.

She was 77, according to The Tennessean.

Bonnie Jean Brown was born July 31, 1938 and came from a musical family: older siblings Jim Ed and Maxine Brown performed together.

As a trio, The Brown's first charting single, "Here Today and Gone Tomorrow" peaked at No. 7 in 1955, and in 1956, their recording of "I Take the Chance" hit No. 2 on the country charts.

During the 1950s, the Browns were cast members on “The Louisiana Hayride” and “Ozark Jubilee,” and, for a time, toured with a young future icon named Elvis Presley.

The group’s most enduring recording, “The Three Bells,” was released in 1959.

The single, which was produced by Chet Atkins, spent 10 weeks atop the country chart, four weeks on the pop charts, and even crossed over to the Hot R&B Sides chart, peaking at No. 10. Five decades after its release, “The Three Bells” experienced a minor resurgence when it was featured in two episodes of the final season of HBO drama “The Sopranos.”

The trio continued to find crossover success with songs including “The Old Lamplighter and “Scarlet Ribbons.” In 1963, the Browns were invited to join the Grand Ole Opry.

After more than a decade as a trio, the Browns stopped recording together in 1967.

July 18 Radio History

In 1909...singer/actress Harriet Hilliard was born in Des Moines, Iowa.

Best known by her married name, Harriet Nelson, she sang with husband Ozzie Nelson’s band, and played “Junior’s” mother & other comedic roles on radio’s Red Skelton Show.  Her best-remembered role was the more than two decades she played the matriarch on radio & TV’s Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet (1944-66).

She died of congestive heart failure on October 2, 1994, at the age of 85.

Red Skelton
In 1913...comedian/clown Red Skelton was born in Vincennes Indiana.

He was a top radio and television star from 1937 to 1971. Skelton’s show business career began in his teens as a circus clown and went on to vaudeville, Broadway, films, radio, TV, clubs and casinos, while pursuing another career as a painter.  Some of his favorite characters on radio & TV were Clem Kadiddlehopper, Freddie the Freeloader, and Junior the Mean Widdle Kid.

He died of pneumonia Sept. 17 1997 at age 84.

In 1964…Lots of Beatles/Radio noise. United Artists -the label which issued  the soundtrack to “A Hard Day’sNight” and Capitol Records - locked horns on the songs from the film. UA had the rights to the original soundtrack album which contains seven songs and instrumental music by George Martin. Capitol was going “all-out” to buck the soundtrack album. Capitol has the rights to issue singles off of the album.

UA rush released advance copies of the “A Hard Day’s Night” soundtrack album to radio stations and stores, after WMCA 570 AM New York got an advance copy and began playing it to their huge New York audience. Capitol issued a single disc by the Beatles, coupling the movie’s title song “A Hard Day’s Night” with “I Should Have Known Better.”

The Capitol album contained the seven picture songs and five new tunes, but will not be identified as a soundtrack album – only UA had those rights.

WINS and WABC weren’t too happy about the “Hard Day’s Night” WMCA exclusive.

WINS got a Beatles exclusive from a special overseas source and began playing “Slowdown” by the Beatles soon after.

The station said it was first to Millie Small’s follow-up record “Sweet William.”WINS also claimed to have “It Hurts To Be In Love” by Gene Pitney first.  WMCA, not a station to play dead,  debuted “Because” by the Dave Clark Five. WINS thought it had the record first, but with a major gaffe, saying “Because” was the newest Beatles record! (Mr. Pop Culture)

In 1964…Tom Clay departed from station CKLW 800 AM, serving the Detroit area. Both called it an amiable parting. Clay felt he was not doing enough on his show when not allowed to play the records himself (union rules). Clay’s nighttime slot was taken by Terry Knight from WTRX, Flint.

Knight would go on to become a recording artist with Terry Knight & The Pack . Their biggest hit was 1966’s “I Who Have Nothing.”) Knight would then go on to bigger and better things as the manager for Grand Funk Railroad .
