George Stephanopoulos is reportedly “miserable” at Good Morning America after being forced to apologize over his comments about President Trump, and speculation about his potential replacement is already swirling among staffers.
The apology stemmed from a defamation lawsuit settled by ABC’s parent company, Disney, in December.
Stephanopoulos had claimed on-air that Trump was “found liable for rape” in a case brought by E. Jean Carroll, when the actual finding was sexual abuse. As part of the settlement, the GMA co-host and former Democratic operative had to issue a public apology, which one insider described as “emasculating.”
Since then, Stephanopoulos has become increasingly withdrawn, fueling rumors that his days at GMA are numbered. “He’s a dead man walking,” one source said, though others suggest he might stay at the network in a less prominent role, possibly working on film or TV projects. However, a source close to ABC dismissed the claims of his unhappiness as “nonsense,” pointing to his on-air demeanor as proof of his commitment.
The network currently pays around $75 million a year for its GMA trio—Stephanopoulos, Robin Roberts, and Michael Strahan—a hefty sum for a morning show in an era of declining TV audiences. If Stephanopoulos exits, Roberts, who wields considerable influence, is expected to push for weekend anchor Gio Benitez, a close ally, to take the seat.
