Bipartisan Effort Reintroduces Local Radio Freedom Act

On Thursday, Representatives Steve Womack (R-AR-3) and Kathy Castor (D-FL-14) spearheaded the reintroduction of the Local Radio Freedom Act (LRFA), a bill designed to prevent local radio stations from facing new performance fees that could jeopardize their operations. The resolution, which has attracted over 100 co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle, reaffirms Congress's commitment to supporting the vital role local radio plays in communities across the country.

Rep. Womack highlighted the importance of local radio, saying, "The Local Radio Freedom Act opposes charges that could threaten the viability of these local businesses that many people rely on." He stressed the station's role in providing not only entertainment and news but also serving as an essential communication channel during emergencies.

Similarly, Rep. Castor pointed out the significance of radio during crises, particularly in Florida where weather updates can be lifesaving. "The radio is a top, trusted choice for receiving local news, weather alerts, traffic updates, community opportunities, and so much more," she noted, emphasizing the indispensable service radio provides.

NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt praised the initiative, stating, "Imposing a new performance fee on top of the hundreds of millions that local stations already pay in copyright and streaming fees would severely hinder our ability to provide these free and essential services to our listeners."

The LRFA's reintroduction is a countermeasure against pressures from the global recording industry, which advocates for new performance fees on U.S. radio stations. These fees could undermine the financial stability of local radio, potentially diminishing the scope of their community services.

By reintroducing this act, Congress aims to shield local broadcasters from additional financial burdens, ensuring that local radio continues to be a crucial resource for millions of Americans.
