L-A R/TV: Broadcast Stations Using Generators To Remain On Air

January 9, 2025

Power outages have continued to cause broadcast disruptions on Mount Wilson in southern California for a second week.

The disruptions have forced broadcasters to rely on backup generators.

On Saturday, Southern California Edison restored power to the 5,700-foot summit, home to transmission towers for most Los Angeles broadcast stations, for about 36 hours. However, power was turned off again on Monday due to a public safety power shutoff caused by high winds.

Doug Irwin, iHeartMedia Los Angeles’ regional engineering lead, mentioned that power restoration is estimated by Thursday.

He coordinated a generator refueling on Tuesday and reported that stations like 92.3 KRRL-FM, 102.7 KIIS-FM, 103.5 KOST-FM, and 104.3 KBIG-FM are operating normally with no disruptions.

Scattered small fires were reported across southern California on Monday as Santa Ana winds gusted up to approximately 85 mph. The winds have since diminished, and forecasters are hopeful for some beneficial rains later this week.

Broadcasters with antennas atop Mount Wilson and the nearby Mount Harvard are accustomed to changing weather conditions.
