Lee Woods, a longtime on-air personality at KONO 860 AM radio who also worked behind the scenes managing and programming at local stations, has died reports the San Antonio Express-News.
Social media posts paying tribute to Woods state he died Sunday night.
Many former colleagues and listeners shared memories of Woods and acknowledged his contributions to local radio.
“Lee was a true music pioneer with a lot of not only knowledge of music but also had met many music icons from yester-year,” local DJ Robert Rivas wrote on Facebook.
Others mourned the loss of a friend who enjoyed sharing his knowledge of music.
Others called Woods the “soul of San Antonio radio” and “a local star” during a time when KONO was a top-rated radio station.
Woods started his local radio career after graduating from the Elkins Institute of Broadcasting in San Antonio in 1974, according to his biography with the San Antonio Radio Hall of Fame, where he was inducted in 2016.
Woods studied broadcasting after serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1973. His first radio gig was at KBER, before moving on to KITY radio.
In 1978, Woods joined KONO, where he spent most of his broadcasting career working as a DJ, program director and operations manager. He left KONO in 1991, but remained active in local radio until retiring in 1998.
Even after retiring, Woods could be heard online doing talk radio, according to his biography.
