4/18 WAKE-UP CALL: Teen Who Went to Wrong Address Improving

Daily Mail Composite (4/18/23)

President Joe Biden spoke Monday with Ralph Yarl, the Black teenager who was shot last week after ringing the wrong doorbell. Biden told Yarl — who was hospitalized with life-threatening wounds but is now recuperating at home — that he hopes for a swift recovery, the White House said in a statement.  Earlier Monday, the prosecutor in Clay County, Missouri, announced charges of assault in the first degree and armed criminal action against Andrew Lester, the 84-year-old White Kansas City homeowner who allegedly shot the 16-year-old Yarl. Ben Crump, one of the teenager’s lawyers, said on Twitter that he “was picking up his younger brothers when he mistakenly rang the doorbell at the wrong house. A man shot Ralph twice.”

➤WOMAN SHOT DEAD AFTER PULLING INTO WRONG DRIVEWAY: A 20-year-old woman was shot dead by an upstate New York homeowner Saturday night after the driver of the car she was riding in turned into the wrong driveway, authorities said. Kaylin Gillis, from Saratoga County, was inside the vehicle with three pals when they made a wrong turn into a driveway while searching for a friend’s house in the town of Hebron, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said. As the driver of the car was leaving, Kevin Monahan, the owner of the home the group accidentally pulled up to, allegedly fired two shots from his patio at the vehicle, authorities said. Gillis was struck by one of the bullets. Monahan, 65, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy said during a Monday press conference.

➤U-S AMBASSADOR VISITS DETAINED WSJ JOURNALIST: U.S. Ambassador to Russia Lynne Tracy visited jailed Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich (right) on Monday in the first access provided to U.S. officials since his detention last month. “He is in good health and remains strong,” Ms. Tracy said in a tweet. “We reiterate our call for his immediate release.” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the ambassador conveyed to Mr. Gershkovich “how hard we’re going to continue to work to get him released,” adding that the U.S. wants to see consular access continue on a routine basis. Russian officials declined to allow consular access for Mr. Gershkovich for nearly three weeks after his initial detention, despite repeated U.S. demands that Russia grant such access as required under international law.

➤NO CRIMINAL CHARGES FOR 8 AKRON OFFICERS WHO SHOT JAYLAND WALKER: The eight Akron officers who shot and killed Jayland Walker last June won’t face criminal charges in his death. A special grand jury of six women and three men, including two Black citizens, on Monday returned a no-bill in Summit County Common Pleas Court, which means the jurors found the actions of the officers were justified. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost said Walker fired out of his vehicle while he was being chased by officers. He said a shell casing was recovered from the entrance ramp to state Route 8 and the ballistics matched the gun recovered in Walker's car after the shooting.

➤EX-CARDINAL MCCARRICK CHARGED IN WISCONSIN WITH SEX ABUSE: The defrocked Roman Catholic cardinal who became the face of the church's clergy sex abuse crisis has been charged in Wisconsin with sexually assaulting an 18-year-old man more than 45 years ago, court records show. A criminal complaint filed Friday alleges that Theodore McCarrick, who was removed from the priesthood in 2019 after a Vatican investigation found he had sexually molested adults and children, fondled a man in 1977 while staying at a cabin on Geneva Lake in southeastern Wisconsin.

➤SEVERAL ACCUSED OF CONSPIRING TO KILL REPORTER: A sheriff, one of his investigators and a county commissioner in southeast Oklahoma are accused by a newspaper of discussing killing a local reporter and lamenting that modern justice no longer includes hanging Black people.  The explosive accusations were published this week in the McCurtain Gazette-News, and now the state's governor is calling for resignations in connection to the claims. According to the newspaper, McCurtain County Sheriff Kevin Clardy, investigator Alicia Manning and District 2 Commissioner Mark Jennings were part of an impromptu discussion after the March 6 meeting of the county Board of Commissioners.  The Gazette, a print-only newspaper, reported it has the full audio recording of the discussion. The FBI and the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office also have copies of the recording, according to the newspaper.

➤PUTIN CRITIC SENTENCED TO 25-YEARS:
A Russian court convicted Kremlin critic Vladimir Kara-Murza (left) for treason and sentenced him to 25 years in prison after he criticized the government of President Vladimir Putin and his invasion of Ukraine. The sentence is the longest to have been handed to a Russian opposition figure since the war in Ukraine began in February last year. It comes after a clampdown on all forms of dissent and the detentions of more than 20,000 antiwar activists for participation in protest rallies, social-media posts and even private conversations denouncing Mr. Putin. In his final statement in court on April 10, Mr. Kara-Murza said he had been imprisoned not for a crime but as retaliation for his opposition to Mr. Putin and the war, and his support for sanctions that have hurt Russia’s economy and made it harder for the government to procure parts for weapons used in the war in Ukraine. “Not only do I not repent of any of this, I am proud of it,” Mr. Kara-Murza said, according to a text of the statement published later by a social-media channel run by his supporters.

➤HOUSE SEES DOCS ABOUT BIDEN FAMILY: House Oversight Committee Republicans reviewed documents Monday suggesting that six more members of Joe Biden's family may have benefitted from business deals related to the president's influence peddling. It comes as the panel now under GOP leadership continues to comb through the financial records of the Biden family and interview those involved in alleged foreign business deals. Rep. Nancy Mace, who sits on the committee, said that the amount of money that is allegedly trading hands in suspicious activity reports is 'astronomical' and that the number of Biden family members involved is 'wild.' 'We've now identified 6 additional members of Joe Biden's family who may have benefited from shady deals. This brings our total to 9,' Oversight Chairman James Comer revealed on Monday. Democrats on the committee are again denouncing the moves by the opposing party, claiming that they are only conducting these investigations to gain 'political dirt' on the Bidens.

➤U-S CHARGES TWO WITH OPERATING SECRET CHINA POLICE STATION:  U.S. federal agents arrested two New York residents for allegedly operating a Chinese "secret police station" in the Chinatown district of Manhattan on Monday in what prosecutors said was part of a crackdown on Beijing's alleged targeting of dissidents. Lu Jianwang, 61, and Chen Jinping, 59, face charges of conspiring to act as agents of China's government without informing U.S. authorities and obstruction of justice. They were released on bond following an initial appearance in Brooklyn federal court. A 2022 investigation published by Spain-based advocacy group Safeguard Defenders reported that China had set up overseas "service stations," including in New York, that illegally worked with Chinese police to pressure fugitives to return to China. The Chinese government has said there are centers outside China run by local volunteers, not Chinese police officers, that aim to help Chinese citizens renew documents and offer other services.

The brakes failed at 60mph, around 2pm, and the limo ran over an intersection near Schoharie, crashing into a ditch next to the Apple Barrel Country Store. The Everybody Loves Raymond actor said he "just had to have a stent put in" his heart, because he had a “90% blockage" in "the main artery." He added, "I got kinda lucky that we found it." Stanton suffered the injury in the seventh inning of Saturday's 6-1 win over the Minnesota Twins. In his final at-bat of the game, Stanton laced a two-run double 403 feet to the deepest part of left-center field at Yankee Stadium before being replaced by a pinch runner.
