Fox Acquires 2 NFL Games, Ad Revenue Drops

Fox has secured two additional NFL regular-season games for the 2026-27 season, the company announced Monday during its quarterly earnings call with analysts.

One game will be an international matchup in Munich featuring the Detroit Lions against a yet-to-be-determined opponent. The second game is scheduled for a Saturday late in the season, with teams still to be announced.

The additions come as Fox’s relationship with the NFL has grown strained in recent months. The league has shifted more games to streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, prompting concerns from Fox leadership about the impact on traditional broadcast networks. Fox Chairman Emeritus Rupert Murdoch has publicly raised alarms over this migration, according to The Wall Street Journal.

On the earnings call, Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch stated there is “no tension” with the NFL. He added that while the league wants to renegotiate rights deals early, there have been no substantive discussions with Fox yet.

➤Financial Results

Fox reported lower fiscal third-quarter results, largely due to not broadcasting this year’s Super Bowl after carrying it the previous year.
  • Net income: $175 million, down from $354 million a year earlier. Earnings per share fell to 38 cents from 75 cents.
  • Adjusted earnings: $1.32 per share, beating analysts’ expectations of $1.00 per share.
  • Revenue: $3.99 billion, down from $4.37 billion (but above Wall Street’s $3.78 billion forecast).
  • Advertising revenue: Dropped sharply to $1.56 billion from $2.04 billion, primarily due to the absence of Super Bowl ad sales.
  • Distribution revenue: Rose 3% to $2.11 billion.
The company also saw reduced expenses from lower sports programming costs tied to not airing the Super Bowl.
