6/5 WAKE-UP CALL: Sonic Boom Rattles D-C

A sonic boom was heard across the Washington DC area Sunday afternoon when military jets raced after a private, unresponsive plane that crossed into restricted airspace and later crashed, killing all four people onboard. The deafening boom rang out when two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled from Joint Base Andrews, in Maryland to investigate the aircraft that was flying, but not responding to radio transmissions shortly after 3 p.m., according to the Department of Defense. Residents around the capital and surrounding communities were left bewildered until more information later came out. The F-16s were deployed after the private Cessna jet flew into restricted airspace over the capital before it violently crashed in southwest Virginia. The fighter jets saw that the pilot of the plane had passed out, a US official told ABC News.

Hours later, police said rescuers had reached the site of the plane crash in a rural part of the Shenandoah Valley and that no survivors were found.

A Florida woman and NRA executive posted a heartbreaking tribute to her daughter and granddaughter after it was confirmed that no one survived the wayward and unresponsive business plane that flew over the nation's capital Sunday afternoon. The flight, which was prompted the Pentagon to scramble an interceptor fighter jet Sunday afternoon as the pilot had become unresponsive. The private Cessna jet from Elizabethton, Tennessee came close to both the US Capitol building and the White House at around 3.30pm, Federal Aviation Administration officials say. Barbara Rumpel, a businesswoman and member of the NRA Women's Leadership Form, posted to Facebook Sunday, confirming that her daughter and granddaughter died in the crash. 'My family is gone, my daughter and granddaughter,' Rumpel wrote in the comments of a post sharing her attendance at an NRA conference.

Details are still limited, and the investigation is ongoing, but Soliz said they believe it was a targeted attack.

The four armed suspects — including at least one possibly 16 — are seen sneaking across an empty lot Wednesday night before jumping out from behind a building and firing off multiple rounds down the street, then running off, according to the surveillance footage obtained by CWB Chicago.

The barrage of gunfire killed 14-year-old Pierre Johnson and critically wounded two young men, ages 18 and 19. A 21-year-old woman also was shot in the hand. The 18-year-old was shot in his back, while the 19-year-old suffered wounds to his chest and leg. None of those injured was identified. ➤NAVY SEAL COMMANDER ON THE DEFENSIVE: The Navy SEAL commander in charge of a boot camp during which a candidate died has spoken out after a report by the Navy suggested under his leadership they were pushed too hard. Kyle Mullen, a 24-year-old from Manalapan, New Jersey, died during an intensive program, Hell Week, after swimming in cold waters and developing pulmonary edema, which caused his lungs to fill with fluid, and pneumonia, an autopsy found. Joni Ernst's annual "Roast and Ride" event at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. Ernst's motorcycle ride and subsequent circuit of presidential speeches marked a key "cattle call" for Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucus season, featuring a growing Republican field that included Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and other candidates courting support in the Hawkeye State.

➤WHAT LED CAPITOL POLICE TO STOP A YOUTH PERFORMANCE OF THE 'STAR-SPANGLED BANNER': Video of a children’s choir singing the national anthem in the U.S. Capitol, only to be unceremoniously cut off by police, spread across social media on Friday.

According to The Associated Press, Capitol Police say singers from Rushingbrook Children’s Choir from Greenville, South Carolina, were stopped on May 26 because of a miscommunication. Musical performances in the hallowed seat of Congress require permission, and police said officers had been unaware that the choir had approval from the House speaker. Capitol Police denied choir leaders' claims that the performance was stopped because it might be found offensive. Choir director David Rasbach and Micah Rea, a choir leader who helped organize the trip, told The Associated Press that they worked with the offices of Reps. William Timmons, Joe Wilson and Russell Fry, all Republicans from South Carolina, to get permission for the performance. They said they were informed the visit was approved by the office of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.

🛢SAUDIS GET GREEDY: Saudi Arabia said Sunday it would cut 1 million barrels of oil a day as part of a deal between OPEC and its allies after one of the most contentious production meetings in recent years amid concerns over slowing global energy demand. Saudi Arabia said the output cut was for July and on top of previously announced curbs, which would be extended until the end of 2024. The United Arab Emirates and some other large producers also extended their previously announced cuts. The Saudi announcement came soon after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its Russia-led allies said the group had agreed to stick to current production targets until the end of the year. Each member of the cartel, called OPEC+, is allotted a production quota, but sometimes members don’t hit that level.

➤RUSSIA CLAIMS MAJOR WIN: Russia said on Monday its forces had thwarted a major Ukrainian offensive at five points along the front in the southern Ukrainian region of Donetsk and killed hundreds of pro-Kyiv troops. It was not immediately clear whether or not the reported attack represented the start of a Ukrainian counteroffensive which Kyiv has been promising for months to recapture territory taken by Russian forces after the invasion of February 2022.  Russia's defenSe ministry said Ukraine had attacked with six mechaniZed and two tank battalions in southern Donetsk, where Moscow has long suspected Ukraine would seek to drive a wedge through Russian-controlled territory.

➤CHINA GETS TOO CLOSE: The U.S. Navy has released a video of what it called an "unsafe interaction" in the Taiwan Strait, in which a Chinese warship crossed in front of a U.S. destroyer in the sensitive waterway, a risky incident amid deteriorating Sino-U.S. ties. The encounter comes as both countries have traded blame for not holding military talks - with disagreements between the two over everything from trade and Taiwan to Russia's invasion of Ukraine - and raises the spectre of future face-offs that could spiral out of control.
