Cleveland Radio: Bernie Kosar Loses Radio Gig For Betting

Bernie Kosar

Former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar, who’s been an ambassador for the team in recent years and contributor on their in-house radio shows, was relieved of his duties by the team Sunday in connection with a bet he placed on the Browns vs. Steelers game, a league source told cleveland.com.

Kosar has tweeted that he placed the first legal bet in Ohio through Tipico Sportsbook, a $19,000 bet on the Browns to win. He vowed to donate any winnings to charity.

But the NFL has strict rules about employees and contractors betting on games of teams they’re associated with, and Kosar’s bet doesn’t align with the rules.

The Browns released a statement early Sunday evening:

“Earlier this week we notified Bernie, that per league policy, we were required to remove him from our pregame radio coverage for the season finale after he violated the NFL gambling policy by placing a bet on an NFL game. We understand what Bernie means to this community and our history but as team contracted personnel hired to provide content on our media platforms, his bet was a violation of NFL rules and we must adhere to all NFL policy.”
