Boise Radio: Ken Bass Exits KRVB-FM

Longtime Boise radio personality Ken Bass was let go from his position as morning host at KRVB 94.9 The River after 19 years with the station.

“I’ve been in Boise radio since ‘85,” Bass told BoiseDev. “It’s been quite the ride!”

He wrote on Instagram that he had been thinking about hanging up the headphones soon, as he will turn 71 in March.

“Well, my decision was made for me today when the corporation owning 94.9 The River, where I’ve been the morning guy for almost 20 years, announced layoffs amongst all of their properties,” Bass wrote on Instagram. “Guess who is now laid off?”

The River is owned by Los Angeles-based Lotus Corp. Bass held down the morning show fort on the station with a variety of co-hosts over the years, including Tim Johnstone, Deb Courson-Smith, and most recently Melissa Dawn.

His Boise radio career goes back much further, waking up audiences in the growing Treasure Valley back to 1985. He joined KCIX FM K-106 (now known as Mix 106) as the station’s owner poured significant resources into making the station a top performer.

He later spent time at AM station N/T KBOI. In the late 1990s, he returned to the FM dial – and K-106’s sister station Lite 108 for mornings.

Bass said management handled the layoff nicely, with apologies and a severance package.

“Management was very regretful and sad that this was happening, but budgetary cuts are budgetary cuts. The radio biz is pretty tough these days. I understand.”
