Wake-Up Call Hurricane Fiona Ravages Puerto Rico

Most of the island of Puerto Rico remained without power last night after Hurricane Fiona unleashed heavy rains, massive flooding, and mudslides. The hurricane struck on Sunday, two days before the five-year anniversary of Hurricane Maria, the storm that devastated the island. President Joe Biden has authorized the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate disaster relief. According to The Weather Channel, the hurricane could pose a threat to Bermuda but will bypass the East Coast.


✞QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND BURIED AT WINDSOR CASTLE: Britain’s Queen Elizabeth the Second was interred next to her husband at Windsor Castle yesterday after a 25-mile display of pomp and circumstance like none seen in our lifetime. Thousands lined the route for the procession from Westminster Abbey to Windsor, led by King Charles the Third and accompanied by the queen’s Grenadier Guards, Royal Navy sailors, the Beefeaters, a Scottish bagpiper, and many more.


➤AMERICAN RELEASED FROM AFGHAN PRISON: Mark Frerichs, an American who had been held in Afghanistan for more than two years, has been released in a prison swap negotiated between the Biden White House and the Taliban. Frerichs is a Navy veteran from Illinois who was a construction contractor in Afghanistan when he was kidnapped by a faction of the Taliban in January 2020. He is now in Qatar and on his way home. In return, the U.S. is releasing a member of the Taliban who was jailed on drug trafficking charges.
 

➤TYPHOON SLAMS JAPAN: Thousands were evacuated from their homes as a typhoon that was said to be unprecedented in size slammed into the southern shore of Japan. At least 15 people were injured, according to local television news. Winds up to 101 miles per hour were recorded before the typhoon moved on. It was expected to weaken as it approached Tokyo.

➤ADNEN SYED RELEASED FROM PRISON: Adnan Syed has walked free after serving 23 years of a life sentence for his conviction in the murder of a former high school girlfriend. His case became famous in a hit podcast, “Serial,” which raised questions about his guilt. Last month, prosecutors recommended that the conviction be vacated as “the state no longer has confidence in the integrity of the conviction.” The judge who vacated the case gave the state 30 days to decide whether to retry Syed. Hae Min Lee was strangled and buried in a park in Baltimore in 1999.

➤TEXAS SHERIFF INVESTIGATES HOW MIGRANTS GOT TO MARTHA’S VINEYARD: A Texas sheriff is investigating the circumstances under which 48 Venezuelan migrants were taken from Texas to Florida and then flown to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, apparently to help the governor of Florida make a political point. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, a Democrat, told reporters that one of the migrants was paid a fee to recruit others from a San Antonio resource center. They were “exploited and hoodwinked,” he said, to help Florida Governor Ron DeSantis make a statement about “sanctuary destinations” that help migrants evade deportation. In this case, the migrants have applied for admission to the U.S. and are allowed to remain while their cases are considered.


➤IS REPUBLICAN DEVOTION TO DONALD TRUMP SLIPPING?:  According to a new NBC News poll, the share of Republicans who say they are more loyal to Donald Trump than to the Republican Party has dropped significantly. Just 33 percent of registered Republicans view themselves primarily as supporters of Trump, while 58 percent say they see themselves as supporters of the Republican Party. Only three percent say they support both the party and the man equally. Loyalty to Trump was as high as 54 percent when the poll was taken in late October 2020.Overall, 34 percent of registered voters said they had a positive view of Trump, while 40 percent had a positive view of President Joe Biden.

Meanwhile, Trump is reportedly fuming after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) relocated roughly 50 migrants by plane to Martha’s Vineyard last week.  According to a report from Rolling Stone, Trump felt DeSantis not only stole his thunder, but also his idea to ship illegal migrants into heavily Democratic areas of the country.


➤WHEN SHOULD YOU GET A FLU SHOT?: The 2020-2021 flu season was unusually low, likely due to Covid-19 safety measures. But what can we expect this year, and when should we get flu shots? Flu cases are expected to go back up this year, and the flu vaccine can take several weeks to go into full effect. Since peak flu season is in December to February, this makes October a great time to get the jab. Everyone aged 6 months or older is encouraged to get the flu shot, which is effective for five to six months.

💰BOO-HOO FOR TECH TITANS: The recent big declines in stock prices have hit Silicon Valley’s tech billionaires hard, according to The Street. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has lost 56 percent of his net worth and is down to $54.7 billion as of yesterday. In fact, six of the 10 biggest losers in the stock market decline are tech billionaires.


🏈BUCS’ MIKE EVANS SUSPENDED AFTER SUNDAY NIGHT BRAWL: Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans has been suspended for one game for his part in the epic brawl that broke out during the Bucs’ game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday night. It seems to have started when Bucs quarterback Tom Brady had words with Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore after a third-down incompletion in the fourth quarter. Bucs running back Leonard Fournette joined the fray, and Evans sprinted in and decked Lattimore. Chaos ensued, ending with both Evans and Lattimore ejected from the game. The Evans suspension cited “unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct.” ESPN says he may appeal.Just to add to the excitement, Tom Brady threw his laptop to the ground to express his frustration shortly before the brawl broke out. It was the second time he tossed his laptop during a game against the Saints.
 
The Buccaneers eventually won the game 20-10, so who knows why they were so crabby.

📺DIRECTV TO REIMBURSE FANS FOR SUNDAY NIGHT OUTAGE: DirectTV plans to issue a refund to subscribers who experienced an outage during NFL Sunday Ticket last weekend. The outage started early in the second quarter and lasted for about 90 minutes.

🏈CHIEFS SUSPEND WILLIE GAY FOR 4 GAMES: Kansas City Chiefs starting linebacker Willie Gay has been suspended by the NFL for four games for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. The suspension stems from Gay’s arrest in Overland Park, Kansas, last January on a misdemeanor charge of criminal property damage. This means Gay will miss upcoming games against the Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Las Vegas Raiders and Buffalo Bills.

🏈FAN SLAPS KYLER MURRAY: Las Vegas police are investigating a bizarre incident in which a spectator at Sunday’s Arizona Cardinals-Las Vegas Raiders game apparently slapped Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray in the face. Murray approached fans in the front row at Allegiant Stadium while celebrating his team’s 29-23 victory when someone in the second row reached over and struck Murray. Murray has not commented on the incident.

🏈49ERS’ LANCE ON ROAD TO RECOVERY: San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance underwent successful surgery yesterday for two injuries to his right ankle, according to a statement from the team. The team’s physician is “confident that he will recover completely in time for a full return in the 2023 season,” the statement said. Lance was carted off the field after being injured in the first quarter of the 49ers’ game Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
