Wake-Up Call: Farewell To The Queen


👑PRESIDENT BIDEN JOINS THE QUEEN'S MOURNERS: President Joe Biden was among the thousands of mourners who paid their respects at Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin on Sunday. People across Britain paused for a moment of silence at 8 p.m. in memory of the monarch.

Biden called the queen “decent” and “honorable and “all about service” as he signed the official condolence book. He is one of 500 world leaders and royals invited to the late monarch’s state funeral. She’ll be laid to rest in Windsor on Monday evening after her funeral at Westminster Abby.



➤PRINCE HARRY AND MEGHAN MARKLE ARE REPORTEDLY ‘UNINVITED’ TO PRE-FUNERAL RECEPTION:  Things still seem a bit rocky between the Sussexes and the royal family. Page Six reports that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were “uninvited” from a pre-funeral reception at Buckingham Palace on Sunday for world leaders and foreign royals.  Apparently, the couple originally received an invitation to the event, but a spokesperson for King Charles III told the outlet, “The invite is for working members of the royal family only.”  To make matters worse, it is reported that Harry and Meghan found out the news themselves through the media. A royal source told Page Six, “Harry and Meghan actually got the invitation and no-one has actually told them they are uninvited. I’m told they only found out they were uninvited by reading press reports.”


➤HURRICANE FIONA LEAVES PUERTO RICO WITHOUT POWER: Hurricane Fiona pummeled the southwest coast of Puerto Rico Sunday, as it unleashed landslides, washed out a bridge in Utuado and knocked out the power grid. Governor Pedro Pierluisi called the damages “catastrophic” as hundreds of people had to be evacuated. Luma, the company that operates power transmissions and distribution said the 80mph winds disrupted transmission lines, leading to “a blackout on all the island,” and added that it could take several days to restore power. As of Sunday night, more than 1,000 people with some 80 pets had sought shelter across the island.


➤PRESIDENT BIDEN DECREES PANDEMIC 'OVER': President Joe Biden declared, “The pandemic is over,” in an interview on CBS Sunday. He told 60 Minutes, “The pandemic is over. We still have a problem with Covid. We’re still doing a lot of work on it. It’s – but the pandemic is over.” The President also told the outlet that he still has not made a “firm decision” on whether he would run for reelection in 2024 but that he intends to run again.

➤NEWSOM CHALLENGES DeSANTIS TO DEBATE:  California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is running for reelection this fall, but the person he's challenged to a debate is the governor of another state, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Newsom tweeted Friday afternoon, "Hey @GovRonDeSantis, clearly you’re struggling, distracted, and busy playing politics with people’s lives. Since you have only one overriding need -- attention -- let’s take this up & debate." Newsom's challenge came after he asked the Justice Department a day earlier to investigate DeSantis using interest earned from federal money to fly 50 migrants from Venezuela to Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. DeSantis had also mocked Newsom earlier Friday, saying, "I think his hair gel is interfering with his brain function," and Newsom responded, "I'll bring my hair gel. You bring your hairspray. Name the time before Election Day."


➤EX-TRUMP SPOKESPERSON, ARKANSAS GOP GOV. NOMINEE SANDERS HAS CANCER SURGERY: Former Trump White House press secretary and current Republican nominee for Arkansas governor Sarah Sanders was released from the hospital Saturday after having surgery for thyroid cancer a day earlier. The 40-year-old Sanders' spokesperson, Judd Deere, said the surgery was "successful," and that she is "cancer free." Deere told AP Sanders would return to campaigning "soon," but didn't say exactly when. Sanders had announced the surgery Friday, saying a biopsy had found the cancer earlier this month. Surgeon Dr. John R. Sims, who is one of Sanders' doctors, said the cancer was stage 1, and that she has an "excellent" prognosis.


🎥‘THE WOMAN KING’ DOMINATES THE DOMESTIC BOX OFFICE:  The Woman King took the domestic box office by storm this weekend, bringing in $19 million. Deadline reports that this number is higher than expected and that people are raving about the epic film, led by Viola Davis.

➤RUTH BADER GINSBURG AUCTION BRINGS IN NEARLY $517K FOR CHARITY: An auction of some 75 items that belonged to late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg brought in nearly $517,000 for charity in an online auction that ended Friday. Bringing in the highest purchase price, $176,775, was a gold judicial collar made of glass beads that belonged to Ginsburg, who died in September 2020 at age 87.Other items auctioned included a gavel that went for $20,400, a pair of black lace gloves that went for $16,575, a shawl that sold for $12,750, and a pair opera glasses that went for $10,837.50. Proceeds from the auction will go to an endowment in Ginsburg’s honor benefitting SOS Children’s Villages, a organization that supports vulnerable children around the world.

➤STUDY: MID-LIFE CRISIS STRESS PEAKS AT 45: Midlife crisis stress is all too real! A National Bureau of Economic Research paper found the mid-life crisis impacts people in wealthy, developed countries the most. People at risk of developing a mid-life crisis tend to be in their peak-earning years, live in safe places, and have few health issues. Stress increased for people in their 40s, and peaked at 45. Factors that contributed to mid-life stress included job stress, sleeping problems, and alcohol consumption.
 
➤OKTOBERFEST TAKING PLACE IN MUNICH FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2019: The German city of Munich is holding its world-famous Oktoberfest for the first time since 2019, after it was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. Mayor Dieter Reiter put the tap in the first keg at noon local time on Saturday, officially opening the festivities, which will run through October 3rd. This is the 187th edition of Munich's Oktoberfest, which usually draws about six million visitors each year to the packed festival grounds.

🏈TREY LANCE SIDELINED BY BROKEN ANKLE: A broken ankle will keep San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance sidelined for the rest of the season. He broke his right ankle Sunday (September 18th) after running the ball on the second drive of a 27-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

🏀LAS VEGAS ACES WIN WNBA TITLE: The Las Vegas Aces won their first WNBA title on Sunday. Chelsea Gray scored 20 points in the game, giving her the MVP title and the team a 78-71 win over Connecticut Sun. This is Las Vegas’ first pro title.
 

🏈HERM EDWARDS FIRED FROM ARIZONA STATE: Herm Edwards has been fired from Arizona State following a home loss to Eastern Michigan. The football coach, who was in his fifth season at the university is also in the midst of an NCAA investigation into illegal recruiting practices. Running backs coach Shaun Aguano will serve as interim coach.

⚾AARON JUDGE NEARS ROGER MARIS' RECORD: Aaron Judge is two home runs away from tying Roger Maris’ American League record. Judge hit his 58th and 59th home runs of the season and lead the New York Yankees in their victory over the Milwaukee Brewers 12 -8 on Sunday. He currently leads the major leagues in homers and with 127 RBIs.

⚾JACKIE ROBINSON'S GLOVE FOR SALE: Fans can have their chance to own one of Jackie Robinson’s baseball gloves for the low price of $750,000. TMZ reports that the Wilson glove worn by the Brooklyn Dodger for his final 1955 and 1956 seasons is being auctioned off by Goldin. The auction show says this is only one of two used Robinson gloves to be authenticated by PSA/DNA.
