Only two other podcasts in the entire news category, which encompasses mainstream, liberal and conservative products, surpassed “Shapiro”: The New York Times’ “The Daily” (1,177,168 subscribers) and the BBC’s “Global News Podcast” (530,747 subscribers). Based on the Castbox data, “Shapiro” had more subscribers than podcasts from mainstream and liberal stalwarts like NPR, MSNBC and The New Yorker. “Bill O’Reilly’s No-Spin News,” which registered 107,438 subscribers, was the only other conservative podcast to tally more than 100,000 subscribers. Other top conservative podcasts include “Louder with Crowder” (84,529 subscribers) and “The Dan Bongino Show” (81,208 subscribers).”The Verdict with Ted Cruz” was the highest-ranked news podcast from a conservative politician (32,533 subscribers).
“While the data from Castbox reflects only a small portion of the podcast audience, it nonetheless provides an important keyhole into the relative size of audiences listening to news podcasts,” said Howard Polskin, President and Founder, TheRighting. “An analysis of the Castbox data shows that while several conservative podcasts walk tall, ‘The Ben Shapiro Show’ is the true podcast giant in the right-wing universe.”
Methodology
This report is based on data that is updated daily from the podcast app Castbox, which is the fourth most popular app on the popular podcast-hosting platform Buzzsprout. Castbox represents 2.6% of all podcasts that Buzzsprout serves ranking behind Apple Podcasts (29.3%), Spotify (29.3%), and Google Podcasts (2.8%). No other leading podcast app besides Castbox makes its data available.
