Poll: More Americans Believe in Climate Change

Increasing natural disasters are leading more Americans to believe in climate change, according to a new poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and the University of Chicago's Energy Policy Institute.

In the survey, 74 percent of Americans said extreme weather in the past five years, including hurricanes, droughts, floods and heat waves, has influenced their opinions about climate change, with half of saying it's influenced their thoughts on climate change a great deal or a lot.

Additionally, 71 percent said the weather they experience every day where they live has influenced their thinking about climate change.

About 70 percent of Americans believe climate change is happening, and of those, 60 percent say it's caused mostly or entirely by humans, and 28 percent think it's an equal mix of human activity and natural changes.

But nine percent of Americans believe climate change isn't happening, 19 percent said they aren't sure, and about 10 percent of those who believe climate change is happening attribute is solely to natural changes.

A 57 percent majority said they'd back a proposal that would add $1 to their monthly electric bill to fight climate change, but most opposed proposals that would add $10 or more monthly.
