NYC Radio: Doc Gooden Talks To WNYM's Joe Piscopo

Joe Piscopo, Dwight Gooden
Dwight Gooden appeared on "The Joe Piscopo Show" on New York's WNYM 970 AM on Monday to respond to the intervention Darryl Strawberry is orchestrating to help Gooden through what Strawberry believes is a potentially deadly drug problem.

According to The Sporting News, Gooden admitted to having a drug problem — “I am an addict,” he told Piscopo — but insisted he is healthy and that missing an appearance last week at a WFAN event “definitely had nothing to do with drugs.”

Gooden offered nothing substantial in the way of explanation, saying only that “some things happened." That’s a long way from what a friend of his who was there told to the New York Daily News.

Strawberry reached out to John Harper of the NYDaily News to discuss his concerns for his friend and former teammate. Strawberry referred Harper to three other people close to Gooden, all of whom “painted ... dark scenario(s)” about the former Cy Young winner. Doc’s son, Dwight Gooden Jr., issued a statement Sunday night to thank Strawberry and others for their efforts to help his father.

Gooden is having none of it.

"The Darryl thing hurt me a lot," Gooden told Piscopo. "I reestablished a relationship with him. I gave him a lot of stuff. I never went to the press. I never said anything (negative) about him. I need to make better choices in picking friends."
