Boston Radio: Prodigal Matty Insists It Wasn't An iHM Stunt

KISS 108's Matty In The Morning (Boston Globe photo)

Radio host Matt Siegel of WXKS 107.9 FM Kiss 108 FM′s “Matty in the Morning” returned to the airwaves Thursday following his abrupt sign-off during Wednesday’s broadcast after being told to stop joking about pop star Demi Lovato’s announcement that they are non-binary, The Boston Globe reports.

Siegel, who said he was being muzzled by the station, initially told listeners he was “ending [his] portion of the radio show,” but later said in a text, “I ain’t leaving.”

And on Thursday, he was back.

“I’m here. Good morning,” Siegel said as he opened the show, before diving into what happened during Wednesday’s show.

“I was on a roll, and I haven’t been on a roll in a long time,” Siegel said. And that’s when I got the call [from corporate management] and I just snapped. I just said, ‘I can’t be here anymore.’”

At issue were comments Siegel made while discussing Lovato’s announcement that the singer would be changing their pronouns. Siegel said his boss at iHeartMedia, which owns Kiss 108 FM, called him and told him to stop.

Siegel’s comments drew criticism from a prominent transgender rights group and online observers as insensitive and harmful.

Siegel spoke about Lovato’s announcement again Thursday morning.

”Somebody has to say this is ridiculous, you know. And the company was like – ‘What? You can’t talk about that,’” he said. “It’s like somebody has to say ‘Are you kidding?’ Like life’s not complicated enough. Now you’re telling young people they don’t know what they are. I say, please. You know what I’m saying?”

Siegel said that after Wednesday’s show, he talked at length to his wife, who said “You’re not ending your career over bleeping Demi Lovato.” Siegel said he also spoke with the company and received “full support” and “the freedom to say what I want.”

What bothered him most amid the rush of headlines that followed Wednesday’s segment, he said, was that many thought it was part of a “radio stunt.”

“It was no radio stunt, if you were looking at my eyes when I wanted to quit,” Siegel said.

Siegel went on to say said that if “we live in a world where you can’t say what you want, and I’m not talking about swearing, but in traditional radio boundaries, if I can’t say what I’m thinking I don’t want to do it any more.”

Chris Cuomo Apologizes To CNN

CNN host Chris Cuomo apologized on air Thursday night for advising his older brother Gov. Andrew Cuomo on handling his sexual harassment scandal, reports The NY Post.

Cuomo, who infamously interviewed the governor about New York’s COVID-19 response throughout the pandemic, emphasized on his primetime program that he never covered his brother’s scandals in Albany.

“Now today there are stories out there about me offering my brother advice,” Cuomo told viewers at the start of his show, “Cuomo Prime Time.”

”Of course I do. This is no revelation. I have said it publicly and I certainly have never hidden it. I can be objective on just about any topic but not about my family.”

“Like you, I bet, my family means everything to me and I’m fiercely loyal to them,” he said.

Cuomo had been in discussions with his brother’s staff, lawyers and others during strategy sessions and advised the governor not to end up another victim of “cancel culture,” The Washington Post reported.

“I’m family first, job second,” Cuomo said on his show during an opening statement that lasted about three minutes.

Cuomo said how he helped his brother mattered.

“When my brother’s situation became turbulent, being looped into calls with other friends of his, and advisers that did include some of his staff, I understand why that was a problem for CNN,” Cuomo said.

“It will not happen again,” he added.

CNN said in response to the story that what the Cuomo Prime Time host had done was "inappropriate," but no discipline is being imposed.

According to The Post, journalists across the nation slammed CNN anchor Chris Cuomo for advising his brother Gov. Andrew Cuomo and even the network’s own reporters are and “bothered” by the conduct.

“The revelation that Cuomo had advised his brother during strategy sessions has vexed staffers inside CNN,” the network’s senior media reporter, Oliver Darcy, tweeted Thursday afternoon shortly after the news came to light.

“Multiple CNN staffers told me they were bothered by Cuomo’s conduct and the violation of traditional journalistic standards,”

Philly Inquirer Seeks Workforce Reduction

The Philadelphia Inquirer is seeking to reduce its workforce by about 10% through another round of buyouts, according to The Philadelphia Business Journal citing union leadership.

In a note sent to members of the News Guild of Greater Philadelphia last week, union president and Inquirer reporter Diane Mastrull said management's goal is to have 40 employees accept the newspaper's latest buyout offer. Unlike past buyouts, if that goal is not reached, Mastrull said there are no layoffs threatened.

Guild Executive Director Bill Ross said Thursday that the Inquirer now has about 400 employees, including 300 members of the Guild who work in editorial, advertising, circulation and finance roles. The buyout is available to both union and non-union employees. He said employees have until May 31 to decide and can depart as early as June 11 but could stay until the end of the year.

Ross said the buyout package offered includes two weeks of pay for each year of service – up to a maximum of 46 weeks – and nine months of COBRA health care coverage.

Even though no layoffs are in the offing this year, Mastrull had a warning to Guild members in her note.

“Those who don’t take the buyout, especially in the newsroom, could find themselves possibly reassigned to other jobs,” Mastrull said. “So, if you are on the fence and a reassignment would cause you to not want to continue to work here, it’s important you have conversations with your supervisors NOW. Don’t let the May 31 deadline for applying for the buyout pass and THEN learn that you’re vulnerable to being reassigned to something you hate.”

The latest buyout offer is not a surprise to employees. When the Inquirer was awarded a $10 million loan — the maximum allowed — through the Paycheck Protection Program, CEO Lisa Hughes told employees the funds would enable the company to avoid layoffs in 2021 but that it may opt to offer buyout packages. She said the company decided to apply for PPP due to the continued impact of Covid-19 on its revenue.

In addition to the $10 million from PPP, the Inquirer saved money by laying off 528 employees after closing its 674,000-square-foot plant on River Road in Upper Merion Township on Dec. 31 and moving printing of the Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News to Gannett’s unionized plant in Cherry Hill. It agreed to sell the plant earlier this year to MLP Ventures, a Radnor real estate company run by J. Brian O’Neill.

Byron Allen Sues McDonald’s For Ad-Budget Discrimination

Two companies controlled by Byron Allen, the onetime stand-up comic who’s built one of the largest closely held media businesses in the U.S., sued McDonald’s Corp., claiming the fast-food giant is discriminating against Black-owned businesses, Bloomberg reports.

The suit alleges the restaurant company has refused to advertise on some of Allen’s digital networks, although it does so on other White-owned channels. It says McDonald’s main ad agency hasn’t solicited bids for spots on the Weather Channel, the cable network Allen acquired in 2018.

McDonald’s spends less than $5 million, or 0.3% of its annual $1.6 billion advertising budget, with Black-owned media companies, according to the suit. The TV producer and entrepreneur, who is African-American, has said advertisers should spend at least 5% of their budgets with companies like his.

Earlier Thursday, McDonald’s released a statement saying it would more than double its national advertising spending on minority- and women-owned media businesses to 10% from 4% between 2021 and 2024. Spending with Black-owned properties will rise to 5% from 2% over the period.

Allen’s push is similar to one he launched in March against General Motors Co. The automotive giant said it plans to spend as much as 8% of its budget on Black-owned media by 2025, up from just 1% last year.

Study: Conservative Media Consumers More Likely To Get Facts Right

From April 29 to May 3, Rasmussen Reports and The Heartland Institute, a national free-market think tank, conducted a nationwide survey of 2,000 likely voters.

Included in the poll was a series of questions asking likely voters how they receive news and information, as well as questions about a variety of topics in the news: the U.S. national debt, the percentage of Americans without health coverage, and tax rates paid by wealthy individuals and families. The following results from the survey illustrate likely voters’ views on these important issues, as well as how those views are correlated with news media preferences.

Some of The Heartland Institute’s key findings from an analysis of the survey results include:
  • There is a strong correlation between a likely voter’s favorite television news outlet and his or her understanding of basic facts about important topics in the news.
  • Generally speaking, respondents who identified CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, or NBC as their “favorite” TV news outlet were more likely to incorrectly answer questions about the national debt, the income tax rate paid by the wealthy, and the percentage of the population that’s uninsured than the viewers of Fox News or “another” cable or network news station (such as The Blaze TV or Newsmax).
  • Our survey also seems to indicate that those who do not watch cable news or network news are more likely to answer our questions about the news accurately than the viewers of CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, or NBC.
  • Compared to viewers of Fox News, “another” cable news outlet, and those who don’t watch network news, viewers of CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, and NBC are substantially more likely to underestimate the size of the national debt, with many dramatically underestimating the debt.
  • For example, 69% of CBS viewers and 65% of NBC viewers underestimated the national debt, compared to 44% for those who said they don’t watch network news.
  • About 30% of CNN viewers and 32% of CBS viewers said the national debt was only $5 trillion or less. For context, the U.S. national debt has not been that low since 1995, more than 25 years ago.
  • Fox News viewers and those who watch “another” cable network not listed among survey results (such as The Blaze TV or Newsmax) were most likely to accurately identify the national debt, with 35% and 37%, respectfully, making the correct selection.
  • Viewers of Fox News or “another” cable network not listed in the survey, as well as those who “don’t watch” cable or network news, were also most likely to accurately identify the top federal income tax rate.
  • About two-thirds of the viewers of CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, and NBC underestimated the top tax rate. About 30% of the viewers of those networks said the top tax rate is just 20% or less.
  • Compared to viewers of Fox News, “another” cable news outlet, and those who don’t watch network news, viewers of CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, and NBC are substantially more likely to underestimate the percentage of the U.S. population that has health coverage.
  • More than 90% of the viewers of CNN, MSNBC, CBS, and NBC underestimated the percentage of the population that has health coverage, and a substantial number of those polled dramatically underestimated the number.
  • For example, 63% of CNN viewers said at least 20% of the U.S. population did not have health coverage prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The actual answer is about 8.8%.
  • Although viewers of Fox News and other cable networks were most likely to correctly select the percentage of the U.S. population without health care coverage, a sizeable percentage of these audiences also underestimated the size of the insured population (82%).

May 21 Radio History

➦In 1916...entertainer Dennis Day born, Owen Patrick Eugene McNulty (Died at age 72 of Lou Gehrig's Disease – June 22, 1988). He was a singer, radio, television and film personality and comedian of Irish descent.

Dennis Day
Day appeared for the first time on Jack Benny's radio show on October 8, 1939. He remained associated with Benny's radio and television programs until Benny's death in 1974. Mary Livingstone, Benny's wife, brought the singer to Benny's attention after hearing Day on the radio during a visit to New York.

Besides singing, Day was a mimic. On the Benny program, Day performed impressions of various celebrities of the era, including Ronald Colman, Jimmy Durante and James Stewart.

From 1944 through 1946 he served in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant. While in service he was temporarily replaced on the Benny radio program by fellow tenor Larry Stevens. On his return to civilian life, he continued to work with Benny while also starring on his own NBC show, A Day in the Life of Dennis Day (1946–1951).

On Benny's show, Day's having two programs in comparison to Benny's one was the subject of numerous jokes and gags, usually revolving around Day rubbing Benny's, and sometimes other cast members' and guest stars' noses in that fact (e.g., "Dennis, why do you have two horns on your bicycle?" "Why shouldn't I? I've got two shows!"). His last radio series was a comedy and variety show that aired on NBC's Sunday afternoon schedule during the 1954–55 season.

He went on to star in his own NBC radio sitcom (Dennis Day Show.) On TV he appeared in 237 episodes of the Benny Show, plus about a dozen guest acting gigs.

➦In 1931...WOR radio in New York City premiered The Witch’s Tale. Beginning in 1934 the pioneering horror show was broadcast on the Mutual Broadcasting System (of which WOR was the flagship station) where it aired until 1938.

➦In 1955...Comedian Ernie Kovacs started a daily morning radio show at WABC 770 AM NYC.  While working at WABC-AM as a morning-drive radio announcer and doing a mid-morning television series for NBC, Kovacs claimed to dislike eating breakfast alone while his wife, Edie Adams, was sleeping after her Broadway performances. His solution was to hire a taxi driver to come into their apartment with his own key and make breakfast for them both, then take Kovacs to the WABC studios.

While working in Vermont in 1939, he became so seriously ill with pneumonia and pleurisy that his doctors didn't expect him to survive. During the next year and a half, his comedic talents developed as he entertained both doctors and patients with his antics during stays at several hospitals.  While hospitalized, Kovacs developed a lifelong love of classical music by the gift of a radio, which he kept tuned to WQXR. By the time he was released, Kovacs went back to Trenton NJ, living with his mother in a two-room apartment. He began work as a cigar salesman, which resulted in a lifelong cigar-smoking habit.

Kovacs's first paid entertainment work was during 1941 as an announcer for Trenton's radio station WTTM. He spent the next nine years with WTTM, becoming the station's director of special events.

➦In 1960...KFAX 1100 AM in San Francisco debuted a news and information format. It’s the first new radio format without a single record. No music anywhere. The format consists of a 15-minute newscast on the hour, a five-minute summary on the half-hour, plus news analysis commentary, editorial and features to fill-out each hour. (KFAX is still on-air, owened by Salem Media, and airs Christian teaching programs.)

➦In 1961...Capital Cities Broadcasting Corp. purchased easy listening WPAT 930 AM  in Paterson, NJ for $5 million. It's  the first company purchase of a station outside a “capital city.” They own WTEN-TV/WROW-AM - Albany, WPRO-TV/Radio -Providence and WTVD-TV/Raleigh-Durham. WPAT is a successful station serving the New York area.  In 1986, following the Cap Cities purchase of ABC, WPAT was sold to Park Communications.

Donna Reed, Carl Betz, Bob Crane
➦In 1963...It was announced that Los Angeles radio personality Bob Crane would be a regular on the “Donna Reed Show” in the Fall. Bob has slowly built his acting career ever since he began doing mornings on KNX 1070 AM in 1956.

Barry Gray
➦In 1966..."two-way talk radio" was making a name for itself and was a viable format on some stations. On the East Coast, Barry Gray is one of the best-known two-way radio hosts. He aired his show on WMCA 570 AM from 11p to 1a.

Gray signed a new four year contract with WMCA. The new arrangement is expected to give Gray $150,000 annually - a 50% raise!

WMCA was anxious to keep the high-rated talker. One reason, WCBS 880 AM made a bid for his services. Gray will actually split the show’s profits - 50/50. At the going rate (and his show is sold-out between 11p and 1a).

Bob Grant

➦In 1971...Los Angeles radio talk transplant Bob Grant was airing an afternoon talk show over WMCA 570 NYC. Grant said that New York is not like Los Angeles, where he spent many a year doing telephone talk radio over KABC and KLAC.

“L.A. radio is really hip compared to New York. Here the scene is very provincial and ethnic and liberal. Being a conservative, I am referred to by most of my callers as the house right-winger or fascist. Actually, it gets pretty funny because they do more yelling at me than engaging in useful debate. The audience in Los Angeles was much more sophisticated. Since WMCA started Dialog Radio, it’s really shot up in the ratings, we’ve gone from around 12th to third in the market.  One of the things WMCA is big on, though, is newsmaker calls and I do a lot of them."

➦In 1973...singer and bandleader Vaughn Monroe died shortly after stomach surgery at age 61. An immensely popular performer on radio and records, Monroe had more than 50 hits on the Billboard charts in the pre-rock ‘n’ roll era. Among his number-one records were 1945′s “There I’ve Said It Again” — revived by Bobby Vinton in 1963 — and 1949′s “Ghost Riders in the Sky.”

➦In 1975...More than ever, disco music was spilling over to Top 40 radio.

The influence of the Discotheque – big in New York, was spreading. Disco records have been breaking into the top-40 more and more because of the initial play at discos. The so-called discotheque came to the U.S. from France during the early 1960’s, but the current trend came from gay clubs. Tom Moulton, who wrote about the disco scene for Billboard – summed it up by saying New York is the hub of America’s disco scene. “The disco scene has doubled in New York in the last two years. New discos are opening all the time. In the New York area there are about 600 discos and about 30 key discos that you can look at to find out what songs are popular.”

➦In 1980...FCC re-aligned AM Clear Channel Stations.

The FCC voted to limit the coverage of so-called “clear channel” AM stations to 750 miles. The restriction covers 25 clear channel stations including KFI, Los Angeles, WCBS, WABC, WNBC in New York City, WLS, WBBM and WMAQ, Chicago and WSM - the home of the Grand Ol’ Opry in Nashville. These stations were “protected” so that their nighttime signals can be heard in outlying areas, providing radio service to rural communities at night where there was no radio service. The FCC modified the rules in the mid-40’s, to allow new nighttime stations to operate on some of the channels, but the distance between stations was far away (WABC- KOB, Albuquerque) and only two operated (at the most) on one channel at night in the continental USA. Some channels still remain clear, such as WCCO in Minneapolis and WSM, which can still be picked-up thousands of miles away from Nashville.

The new rules allowed smaller stations to broadcast at night, thereby “interfering” with the distant broadcasts. The FCC says it will make room for 125 more nighttime AM stations.

Other stations with clear channel status - WSB - Atlanta, WBAP - Ft Worth, WLW  - Cincinnati, WJR - Detroit, KDKA - Pittsburgh, KMOX - St Louis, WWWE - Cleveland, WHAM, Rochester, WCAU - Philadelphia, WOAI - San Antonio, WHO - Des Moines, WOR - New York, WWL - New Orleans, KSL - Salt Lake City, WBZ - Boston.

Certain medium wave frequencies were set aside under the North American Radio Broadcasting Agreement (NARBA) for night time use by only one or two specific AM stations, covering a wide area via skywave propagation; these frequencies were known as the clear channels, and the stations on them are thus clear-channel stations. Where only one station was assigned to a clear channel, the treaty provides that it must operate with a nominal power of 50 kilowatts or more; stations on the other clear channels, with two or more stations, must use between 10 kW and 50 kW, and most often use a directional antenna so as not to interfere with each other. In addition to the frequencies, the treaty also specified the specific locations where stations on this second kind of channel (known as class I-B) could be built.

Some of the original NARBA signatories, including the United States, Canada and Mexico, have implemented bilateral agreements that supersede its terms, eliminating among other things the distinction between the two kinds of clear channel: the original "I-A", "I-B", and "I-N" station classes are now all included in class A.

Clear-channel stations, unlike all other AM stations in North America, have a secondary service area—that is, they are entitled to protection from interference to their nighttime skywave signals. Other stations are entitled, at most, to protection from nighttime interference in their primary service area — that which is covered by their ground wave signal.

Boston Radio: KISS 108's Matty In the Morning Returns To Show

➤UPDATED 11 AM Thursday:  Radio host Matt Siegel of WXKS 107.9 FM Kiss 108 FM′s “Matty in the Morning” returned to the airwaves on Thursday after abruptly signing off during Wednesday’s broadcast in the wake of being told to stop making jokes about pop star Demi Lovato’s announcement that they are non-binary. Siegel, who said he was being muzzled by the station, initially told listeners he was “ending [his] portion of the radio show,” but later said in a text, “I ain’t leaving.”

“I’m here. Good morning,” Siegel said as he opened the show on Thursday, before diving into what happened during Wednesday’s show when he appeared to quit.

Siegel said that after Wednesday’s show, he talked to his wife “at length” who said “you’re not ending your career over bleeping Demi Lovato.” Siegel said he also spoke with the company and received “full-support” and “the freedom to say what I want.”

“So I’m here,” Siegel continued on Thursday.

He continued that what bothered him most amid the rush of headlines that followed Wednesday’s segment was that many thought it was part of a “radio stunt.”

“It was no radio stunt, if you were looking at my eyes when I wanted to quit,” Siegel said. “Some people thought it was a gag. It’s not a gag.”

Siegel went on to say said that if “we live in a world where you can’t say what you want, and I’m not talking about swearing, but in traditional radio boundaries, if I can’t say what I’m thinking I don’t want to do it any more.”

➤UPDATE 6AM Thursday:  That didn't last long.  Matty is back!  LISTEN

On Wednesday....Longtime radio host Matt Siegel signaled he may have left the airwaves for good after an on-air rant lambasting his KISS 108 “Matty in the Morning” bosses.

“I am the biggest of all time and they said, ‘Shut up Matt — stop talking.’ Well, I hope you’re happy,  because I just stopped talking. Matty out,” Siegel said during a monologue he gave after discussing a pop star’s gender pronouns on Wednesday morning’s show.

Siegel had been addressing Demi Lovato’s public announcement to identify as a nonbinary person. Soon after the segment, he referenced an apparent off-air conversation with management at iHeartRadio, which owns KISS 108.

“They pulled the plug on me and they said, ‘You cannot talk about what you’re talking about,'” he said on-air. “I like my boss personally, I do. I’m very fond of him, he’s very nice to me. It’s not personal, it’s professional.”

The Boston Herald reports the 71-year-old Siegel has hosted his Boston morning show since 1981. The show is KISS 108’s highest performing program and regularly ranks as the No. 1 morning show in the Boston market. It was syndicated throughout New England from 2001-2009, but now only airs in the Greater Boston area.

KXKS 107.9 FM, KISS 108, just pulled a 7.4 Nielson rating in April 2021, once again clinching the market’s top spot. According to Nielsen numbers, Siegel’s audience can reach upwards to 450,000 listeners a week.

Siegel was inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcaster’s Hall of Fame in 2012.

“I can’t do what I just want to do, which is be a funny comic who tells it like it is about what he’s thinking,” Siegel said on-air Wednesday morning. “So I’m ending my portion of the radio show right now.”

“Listeners, I love you, and it’s been a hell of a run. But I think it’s coming to an end,” Siegel said.

The show has a cast of supporting characters around Siegel, who takes calls on-air and talks about current events and pop culture. Food reviewer and personality Billy Costa rides shotgun with Siegel, joined by cohost Lisa Donovan and producer Rebekah “Bex” Maroun.

“Bill, and Lisa, and Bex, and Dom I hate putting you in this position. But I was told by my boss that I cannot talk about what I want to talk about,” the host said on-air.

Siegel again referenced Lovato’s decision to go by they/them pronouns — the story that lit the match.

“By the way, it’s a joke — the whole binary thing. I don’t care what Demi Lovato does, but now we have to worry about, you might offend someone. So I basically offended right-wing people, and today I offended left-wing people,” he said.

Siegel told Boston.com in a phone interview after Wednesday’s show that “I’m against her binary thing; I think she’s a troubled woman and a lot of young people are taking her seriously and it bothers me,” stressing that “of course, it’s a comedy show, so I did it in the context of jokes.”

Though he called Lovato a “woman,” many non-binary people do not identify as either gender, so pronouns such as “her” would not accurately describe them; they is the preferred pronoun in such cases.

Ad Recovery Surges 52% In April

In the second month to report an explicit year-over-year comparison impacted by the COVID-19 ad recession, the U.S. advertising marketplace surged 52% over April 2020, another strong indicator that the ad recovery is sustainable, reports Mediapost.

The month, however, still has not caught up with April 2019, which was the best April since Standard Media Index has tracked the U.S. advertising via a market composite index, the U.S. Ad Market Tracker.

April 2021, interestingly, also is the first post-recession month to show stronger gains for smaller ad categories than the biggest ones, an indication that the recovery is gaining momentum across a broader range of advertisers.

While the top 10 ad categories' ad spending jumped 44% year-over-year in April, all other ad categories surged 69.1%.

In terms of the media mix, the national TV advertising marketplace continues to rebound, but digital is driving most of the aggregate U.S. ad market recovery.

National TV ad spending increased 14.7% over April 2020, but is still down 32.1% vs. April 2019.

The U.S. digital advertising marketplace is up 82.7% vs. April 2020, and up 31.7% vs. April 2019.

FOX News Family Feud Displayed During 'Hannity'

Geraldo Rivera threw paper and turned his back on Dan Bongino during a wild screaming match over the Palestinian-Israel conflict on Hannity Wednesday, The Daily Mail reports.

The Fox News personalities appeared together on Sean Hannity to discuss the Middle East conflict which has killed at least 227 people in Gaza and 12 in Israel.

The two appeared ready to resume hostilities from the moment they appeared on air after a similar spat in April.

Fox News host Hannity began by asking Rivera, an outspoken critic of Israeli aggression, for his views.

Rivera, 77, a veteran war correspondent, said it was 'abhorrent' that Palestinians were dying at 20 times the numbers of Israelis.

'I demand a cease fire,' he said.

Bongino, 46, attacked Rivera and accused him of being ignorant about the causes of the latest violent flare-up.

'Geraldo, you do this every time and it is such garbage. You play this emotional game with the audience and use your position of responsibility to put out misinformation.'

'This is not about me,' Geraldo replied. 'You didn't come here to attack me. I'm sick of you, Bongino. You're a punk.'

The discussion quickly descended into farce as the pair traded insults and shouted over one another.

With his trademark mustache bristling, Rivera screwed up a piece of paper and hurled it at the monitor from his remote location.

Bongino burst into laughter and called him an 'out-of-control lunatic'.

'I'm an out of control lunatic?' Rivera responds. 'I'm a ten-time Emmy winner.'

In April, Rivera had an epic meltdown during a screaming match with Bongino on Hannity over policing and protests in the wake of the death of Daunte Wright.

Bongino then begins to criticize Rivera's understanding of the Middle Eastern conflict again.

'Geraldo Rivera does not understand that Hamas doesn't believe in Israel's right to exist,' he said.

'Hamas wants the Jews dead. What does (Rivera) do? The same thing with the police issue. He makes this an emotional thing and he says the Palestinian children.'

'You are so misinformed on this, it's pathetic.'

As Bongino is talking, Rivera turns his back to the camera.

Wake-Up Call: House Green Lights Capitol Attack Commission

35 GOP JOIN WITH DEMS DESPITE LEADERSHIP OPPOSITION:
The House voted yesterday to create an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. The measure passed on a 252-175 vote, with 35 Republicans joining all the Democrats in favor, despite opposition from House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy as well as former President Donald Trump. Prospects for approval in the 50-50 Senate are uncertain, with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell coming out against it yesterday, and trying to prevent fellow Republican senators from breaking ranks to support it.

Both McCarthy and McConnell claimed the legislation was partisan, even though the commission's 10 members would be evenly split between both parties. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi released a February letter from McCarthy in which he asked for an even partisan split on the commission, equal subpoena power, and no predetermined findings, all of which she said the legislation includes.

➤NEW ISRAELI AIRSTRIKES IN GAZA AS NETANYAHU RESISTS U.S. PRESSURE TO END OFFENSIVE: Israel launched new airstrikes in the Gaza Strip early Thursday, with the country's military saying it hit at least four homes of Hamas commanders, military infrastructure and a weapons storage unit. The latest strikes came after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu resisted pressure from the U.S. to begin to bring the offensive to an end, saying yesterday that he was, quote, "determined to continue this operation until its aim is met" of returning "calm and security" to Israelis. Hamas has fired thousands of rockets into Israel from Gaza. The White House had said yesterday that President Biden told Netanyahu he expected, quote, "a significant de-escalation today on the path to a cease-fire."

➤COLONIAL PIPELINE CONFIRMS IT PAID HACKERS $4.4 MILLION AFTER BREACH: Colonial Pipeline confirmed yesterday (May 19th) that it paid $4.4 million to a hacker gang that breached its computer systems, disrupting fuel supplies for nearly a week and leading to panic-buying and shortages at gas stations from the mid-Atlantic to the southeastern U.S. Colonial Pipeline, which operates the nation's largest fuel pipeline that delivers about 45 percent of the gas consumed on the East Coast, said it needed to do everything in its power to quickly and safely restart its pipeline system after shutting it down when it learned of the May 7th ransomware attack. A spokesman said of paying the ransom, "This decision was not made lightly." CEO Joseph Blount told The Wall Street Journal he approved the payment because they didn't know the extent of the damage and weren't sure how long it would take to bring the systems back. He said, "[I]t was the right thing to do for the country."

➤TEXAS GOV. SIGNS LAW BANNING ABORTION AS EARLY AS SIX WEEKS, ALLOWING CITIZENS TO SUE DOCS, OTHERS: Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott signed legislation yesterda that bans abortions in the state after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which is as early as six weeks, before many women know they're pregnant. Additionally, it puts enforcement of the law in the hands of private citizens, not state officials, allowing anyone, even someone who's not a Texas resident, to sue doctors or anyone who helps a woman get an abortion and seek financial damages of up to $10,000 per defendant. The law is set to go into effect in September, however federal courts have blocked states from enforcing most similar measures.

➤INDIA SETS NEW GLOBAL DAILY RECORD FOR COVID-19 DEATHS, PASSING U.S.: India on Wednesday set a new global daily record for coronavirus deaths, reporting that 4,529 people died of Covid-19 -- a number that experts believe is still an undercount. The U.S. had previously held the daily record, when 4,475 people died of Covid on January 12th of this year. India has been dealing with a horrific surge of the coronavirus for weeks, and while large cities have begun to see some signs of improvement in recent days, there is concern that it's now spreading through the large rural areas of the country.

➤THREE MINUTES OF EXERCISE FOR EACH SEATED HOUR CUTS RISK OF EARLY DEATH: If you spend most of your waking hours sitting down you’re living a sedentary lifestyle. Studies have shown that living this way can put you at higher risk of early death, but a new study finds that spending three minutes doing exercise for every hour spent sitting can lower that death risk. Glasgow Caledonian University researchers specifically found that balancing out your sedentary lifestyle with running or brisk walking can lower the risk of premature death by 30 percent. They also note that for those unable to do three minutes of intense exercise, 12 minutes of light activity (such as gentle walking or housework) can be substituted instead. They note the exercise can be spread across the day or be done in a single session. Lead study author Professor Sebastian Chastin adds that as far as hours you don’t spend seated “should be spent generally moving around as much as you can on getting a good night’s sleep.”

➤AMAZON’S RING IS THE ‘LARGEST CIVILIAN SURVEILLANCE NETWORK THE US HAS EVER SEEN’, WARNS SECURITY EXPERT: If it seems like everyone you know has Amazon’s Ring doorbell camera—you’re not kidding yourself. Lauren Bridges is a PhD candidate at the University of Pennsylvania, and says that one in ten police departments across the U.S. have access to video from the civilian cameras after the company partnered with more than 1,800 local law enforcement agencies. Bridges says she’s very concerned that the police are able to request Ring videos from members of the public without a warrant, which she says is deliberately circumnavigating the Fourth Amendment. Her data shows that in 2020 alone, law enforcement agencies filed 22,337 individual requests for Ring videos. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (a nonprofit that is “defending civil liberties in the digital world”) has even started petitions calling on Ring to end its partnerships with law enforcement agencies. Amazon says that Ring owners are in full control of their footage and whether they decide to share it or not.

➤DIVORCES FALL IN CHINA AFTER 'COOLING OFF' PERIOD PUT IN PLACE: The number of divorces had been rising in China in recent years, but they've now started to fall after the country put a mandatory "cooling-off" period in place for married couples seeking to split. Under the new requirement implemented on January 1st, couples filing for divorce must wait 30 days after submitting their application, during which time either person can withdraw the petition. They must then apply again after the month is over for the divorce to be granted. Data released by China's Ministry of Affairs shows that the number of divorces has fallen by more than 70 percent since then. The requirement was widely criticized, with opponents saying it restricts personal freedoms and could trap people in marriages that are unhappy or even violent. But there are other countries that also have cooling-off periods for couples seeking a divorce, including France, which makes them wait two weeks, and the U.K., which makes them wait six weeks.

➤MORE PEDESTRIANS KILLED BY CARS IN 2020 DESPITE PANDEMIC: The number of pedestrians killed by vehicles spiked in 2020 despite there being fewer car on the road due to the pandemic, the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) said yesterday. The organization said the pedestrian fatality rate rose 21 percent from 2019 for the largest-ever annual increase. GHSA's senior director of external engagement, Pam Shadel Fishcer, blamed "reckless" driving as well as distracted drivers. She told ABC News, "Speeding is a huge factor in pedestrian serious injuries and fatalities. We've got to get motorists to slow down." The National Safety Council earlier this year also found an increase in road deaths last year, saying that with fewer people on the roads, some motorists were driving more recklessly on the open roads.

➤BIDEN GIVES FIRST COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS AS PRESIDENT AT COAST GUARD ACADEMY: President Biden gave his first commencement address since taking office at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut yesterday (May 19th). Biden used the speech to the 240 graduates to speak about the U.S. as a defender of global rules, trade and marine law, saying, "The best way to meet the wide array of threats we meet today is by investing in America’s enduring advantages and ensure we’re operating from a position of strength." He also praised the graduates for how they persevered through the pandemic, saying, "you met the threat head on, you adapted, you showed resilience, you led."

➤PHILADELPHIA DIMS SKYLINE LIGHTS BECAUSE MIGRATING BIRDS WERE BEING KILLED: Twenty buildings in Philadelphia's skyline are dimming their lights this spring after thousands of migrating birds died in the largest mass collision in recent history. CNN reports that the voluntary effort will continue until May 30th, to help allow for the safe semi-annual migration of some 100 million birds that pass over the city. Birds can get confused and disoriented by bright city lights if they have to fly at lower altitudes due to fog and rain. Philly's action was spurred in part when thousands of birds died last October 2nd after hitting buildings in the city.

➤AMERICANS ARE BOOKING WORKING ‘VACCI-CATIONS’ BEFORE OFFICE LIFE RESUMES: More and more people are getting vaccinated, and some pandemic-related restrictions have been lifted. So this summer gives some people a unique opportunity, as many office workers still work remotely, and their kids are going to be done with school soon. Some are using the opportunity to go somewhere else to work, and then to take some vacation time as well. Airbnb says it’s continued to see an increase in longer-term bookings, and last year it found that 60 percent of people booking longer-term stays were working or studying while there. Online reservation giant Booking Holdings, which owns Kayak, Booking, Priceline and OpenTable, said it’s seen an increase in travel reservations and expects it to continue for the summer. Some companies have even added a new option that could make remote vacations the norm—Google, for example, is giving workers up to four weeks of “work from anywhere” time a year after workers return in September.

⚾YANKEES' KLUBER PITCHED NO-HITTER, MLB'S SECOND IN TWO DAYS: The New York Yankees' Corey Kluber pitched a no-hitter against the Texas Rangers last night, MLB's second in two days and the sixth so far this season, the most-ever this early. Golden State will play for the Western Conference's eighth seed against the Memphis Grizzlies, who defeated the San Antonio Spurs 100-96 in the day's other play-in game.

Nielsen: Radio Listening Continues To Recover

The April 2021 PPM survey revealed new gains in radio listening across the aggregate of markets for the second month in a row. As America continues to reopen, consumers are returning to radio in numbers not seen in over half a year.

Radio's weekly reach is now at its highest levels (121 million weekly consumers) since March, 2020 when COVID-19's impact began to take hold. Since the beginning of 2021, radio has added more than 5 million new weekly listeners.

Radio's Average Quarter-Hour (AQH) audience in April 2021 hit its highest levels since the fourth quarter of 2020, prior to this winter's virus surges and associated restrictions. What's more, AQH audience levels have jumped 10 percent in the past two months as vaccinations and a gradual return to pre-pandemic routines have proliferated.

The year-over-year comparison between the April, 2020 and April, 2021 PPM stands at a 114 index for weekly reach and a 131 index for AQH. This means that from a weekly reach perspective, the radio audience in April, 2021 is 14% larger than the same month from one year ago, while for AQH the audience is now 31% larger.

The April listening gains were spread across the day, with all major dayparts at or near their AQH peaks since COVID-19 began. Both morning drive (Monday-Friday 6-10am) and weekends (Saturday-Sunday 6am-12m) hit their highest audience levels since the fall.

From a format perspective, some routine and seasonal shifts are underway. Country radio is reporting higher shares of audience heading into the summer, following its usual seasonal pattern. Classic Hits is also gaining ground, another annual occurrence. Meanwhile, the return of major league baseball along with other live sports is boosting the All Sports format near its fall football season levels.

Notably, the Urban Adult Contemporary / R&B format recorded its highest share of listening in several years in the April survey, which took place from April 1 to April 28. The national interest in the social justice movement has had far-reaching effects beyond just the usual News and Talk platforms. Specifically, the verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin was announced on April 20, when millions of Americans tuned in live to hear the decision across live radio and TV. The April gains for Urban AC / R&B stations may have been driven by what was happening between the songs, as much as the music cycle itself during such a milestone moment.

NYC Radio: Michael Kay Feels ‘More Pressure’ To Win Ratings War

It’s more fun being the hunter than the hunted.

The NY Post reports that’s how Michael Kay feels about the WEPN ESPN 98.7 FM New York–WFAN 101.9 FM / 660 AM afternoon radio war now that Craig Carton is in the driver’s seat at Kay’s rival instead of Mike Francesa.

Kay surpassed longtime No. 1 Francesa in 2019 before Francesa retired. But Carton, who returned to WFAN after a three-year absence – which included one year in federal prison for fraud – won the winter ratings book with partner Evan Roberts.

\“I don’t want to lose to Craig,” Kay told former WFAN host John Jastremski on the “New York, New York” podcast. “He’s a guy who came back and I had the lead and Mike was retiring and you figure, ‘Oh, you’re gonna have a couple years where you can relax a little.’ With Craig, you’re not gonna relax. Craig’s really, really good at this. I think there’s more pressure now because I was the one that was in first. Mike was always the one in first, so I didn’t have the pressure. He did. I don’t even know if he thought it was pressure, but I feel more pressure now than I did trying to chase Mike, if that makes sense.”

That is why going head-to-head against Francesa was a more pleasant experience for Kay.

“I really enjoyed the Mike thing because I was the underdog then,” Kay said. “The underdog, if you lose, you lost. You gave it a good shot. Mike, he invented this essentially. He was the king. Just to try to knock him off was fun. And as we were getting closer and closer, I couldn’t even believe it was happening. I never got a chance to listen to him once we started going up against him, but you know what? I’m not sucking up to anybody — I know Mike doesn’t like me — I consider it an honor to have competed against him. I really do. I just thought, you’re going to the top of the mountain. You’re trying to scale the guy at the top of the mountain. What could be more fun than that? I loved it.”

ESPN New York moved “The Michael Kay Show” up to a 2 p.m. start to go right up against “Carton & Roberts” for the spring book.

NYC Radio: Hollywood Hamilton Ending Syndicated Platforms

Radio Hall of Fame inductee Sean "Hollywood" Hamilton has announced his retirement from all three of his national radio programs -- "Hollywood Hamilton's The Weekend Top30," "The Remix Top30 with Hollywood Hamilton" and "The Weekend Top30 with DJ Pup Dawg."

Hollywood Hamilton
Hamilton's weekday afternoon program continues to be heard on iHeartRadio's WKTU 103.5 FM in New York.

"It's time to spend more quality time with my family and continue developing new projects I've been passionate about," said Hamilton. "I'll be announcing new endeavors in Spring, 2022."

Hamilton, known as "Hollywood" since his earliest days working in syndicated radio, first teamed up in the 1980s with Dick Clark and the late Steve Rivers to pioneer one of the first live, pop/mainstream satellite programs called "Hangin' with Hollywood" on the Transtar/Unistar Radio Network.

"First and foremost, I want to give thanks to the more than 150 program directors that stuck with me all these (35) years," Hamilton stated. "You have no idea how much that meant to me. None of this would be possible without the incredible producer/production team of Eric Weiss, Michelle Parisi, DD, Dwayne Crawford, DJ Pup Dawg and my wife, Marina. Without this group, the shows would never have lasted this long, while continuing to stay on top. I also want to thank my enormously talented Premiere Networks family - you're the best in the business."

In 1998, he debuted three iterations of his popular franchise: "The Weekend Top30" and the multiple award-winning, dance music version, "The Remix Top30" for CHR/Top 40-formatted stations, and a CHR/Rhythmic-formatted version of "The Weekend Top30," most recently hosted by DJ Pup Dawg.

"The Weekend Top30" and "The Remix Top30" were first launched into national syndication with Andy Denmark and his team at United Stations before joining Premiere Networks' national lineup in 2013, where they will conclude the weekend of June 26 and 27.

"Sean is a tremendous talent, and we had a successful partnership for the past eight years," said Premiere Networks President Julie Talbott. "He will truly be missed on hundreds of stations across the country. We wish him all the best for the future as he takes on this next chapter of his career."
