July 14 Radio History

➦In 1917...Douglas Edwards born (Died at age 73 – October 13, 1990). He anchored CBS's first network nightly television news broadcast from 1947–1962, which was later to be titled CBS Evening News.

Douglas Edwards
Edwards joined CBS Radio in 1942, eventually becoming anchor for the regular evening newscast The World Today as well as World News Today on Sunday afternoons. Edwards came to CBS, after stints as a newscaster and announcer at WSB in Atlanta, Georgia and WXYZ in Detroit, Michigan.

In the mid-1940s, Edwards was host of the radio program Behind the Scenes at CBS.

In 1947, as CBS's top correspondents and commentators shunned the fledgling medium of television, Edwards was chosen to present regular CBS television news programs and to host CBS's television coverage of the 1948 Democratic and Republican conventions. The term "anchor" would not be used until 1952, when CBS News chief Sig Mikelson would use it to describe Walter Cronkite's role in the network's political convention coverage.

At first, Edwards would be eclipsed by John Cameron Swayze of NBC News's Camel News Caravan, but he would eventually regain his ratings lead. By the mid-1950s, the nightly 15-minute newscast Douglas Edwards with the News was watched by nearly 30 million viewers.

Edwards' last newscast on the evening news was on April 13, 1962. Edwards was replaced by Walter Cronkite, and the program became Walter Cronkite with the News. On September 2, 1963, the program was retitled CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite and became the first half-hour weeknight news broadcast of network television and was moved to 6:30 p.m. .

Edwards subsequently moved back to CBS Radio, where he delivered the network's flagship evening newscasts The World Tonight for many years.

➦In 1927...NBC newsman John Chancellor was born in Chicago. He spent most of his career with NBC News. He served as anchor of the NBC Nightly News from 1970 to 1982 and continued to do editorials and commentaries for NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw until 1993.

During the 1976 election he introduced the concept of Red and Blue states, which survives to this day.

He died of stomach cancer July 12 1996, two days shy of his 69th birthday.

➦In 1957…Master satirist Stan Freberg debuted a new weekly comedy program on CBS Radio Network in the time slot previously occupied by Jack Benny.

In addition to Freberg, the cast included June Foray, Peter Leeds, and Daws Butler. Billy May arranged and conducted the music. The program failed to attract sponsors and the network cancelled the series after 15 episodes. It was the last U.S. network radio show to devote itself purely to comedy.

➦In 1969...WBZ 1030 AM, Boston increased its talk programming to a full 10 1/2 hours-a-day.

Increased competition in the top 40 format — first from WMEX 1510 AM which had programmed a top 40 format since 1957, then from WRKO, which adopted the format in 1967 — led WBZ to shift its music programming to adult contemporary in 1969, playing several songs an hour between 6 and 9 a.m. (though it was not unheard of for Carl DeSuze to play only one, if any, song an hour during his show), 10 to 12 songs an hour between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., and 4 to 6 songs an hour between 4 and 7 p.m..

At night, WBZ programmed talk shows, with such hosts as Guy Mainella, a pioneer in sports talk; Jerry Williams in the evenings; and Larry Glick's overnight show. Music was also programmed during the day on weekends.

Beginning in the late 1960s, WBZ made a major push into live play-by-play sports. From 1966 through 1979, and again from 1991 through 1994, WBZ was home to radio broadcasts of New England Patriots.  In the fall of 1969, WBZ regained the radio rights to the Boston Bruins (which it had lost in 1951), and also began carrying Boston Celtics basketball. The Bruins stayed through the 1977-78 season.

➦In 1984...FLASHBACK..from R&R Week of July 13, 1984:

➦In 2015…Marlene Sanders died at age 84 from cancer (Born - January 10, 1931). She was a TV news correspondent, anchor, producer and executive who worked for ABC News in the 1960s and 1970s and moved to CBS News in 1978. She is known for being the first woman to achieve several milestones in the then male-dominated field of television news.

Shortly after joining ABC News as a correspondent in 1964, Sanders became the first woman to anchor an evening news broadcast for a major network when she substituted for the regular anchor, who had become ill. She was also the first woman to report on the Vietnam War from the field. In 1976, ABC promoted her to vice president and director of documentaries, making her one of the first women to reach upper management in the field. She also won three Emmy Awards for documentaries she produced for CBS.

D-C Radio: Erika Pulley-Hayes Named New GM At WAMU

WAMU has hired Erika Pulley-Hayes to lead the station as its new general manager. Pulley-Hayes, president and CEO of Community Communications, Inc., an NPR affiliate in Orlando, Florida, will start her new role August 30, according to a posting at the WAMU website.

Pulley-Hayes told DCist in an interview Monday that she is most excited about joining the “spirit and energy” of Washington.

“Washington, D.C., is really a public radio station’s dream market,” she says. “D.C. is the seventh media market in the country. That’s a big deal. So I just think there are so many positives about this opportunity about this city, at this university, with this station. If you’re going to be in public media, this is where you want to be.”

    Erika Pulley-Hayes
Pulley-Hayes, 49, has worked in public media since 2005 and, since January 2020, has managed two public radio stations in Central Florida — WMFE in Orlando and WMFV in The Villages. Before that role, she served as vice president of radio for the D.C.-based nonprofit Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which supports more than 1,500 publicly-owned media organizations across the U.S. — including WAMU — with taxpayer funds. Before her time at CPB, Pulley-Hayes managed legal operations at a small clinical research organization in Northern Virginia. In September 2020, Pulley-Hayes was elected to the NPR Board of Directors.

Pulley-Hayes succeeds JJ Yore, who stepped down last August after six years at WAMU. His departure came amid a public reckoning for the station, stemming from a DCist investigation that uncovered allegations of sexual harassment against a former reporter and tweets by former and current employees who said the station had a history of mistreating staffers of color.

In a statement, a WAMU spokesperson said that as general manager, Pulley-Hayes will “oversee all aspects of WAMU’s operations and a staff of more than 100, and she will serve as WAMU’s ambassador to the Washington, D.C.region and the public media system.”

The station considered more than 130 candidates for the role, according to Seth Grossman, a VP at American University and chief of staff to the president, who led the station’s search committee. Grossman has also served as interim GM of WAMU since Yore’s departure.

Buffalo Radio: Tom Calderone New CEO For Buffalo Public Media

The Buffalo Toronto Public Media Board of Trustees announced today its pick for the organization’s new President and CEO – Tom Calderone, media and entertainment executive who has held leadership positions with Spotify, VH1, and MTV. The executive search began last October, after Donald K. Boswell announced his intention to retire. Calderone will take over from Boswell Aug. 2, 2021.

“We are confident that Tom Calderone is the right leader for Buffalo Toronto Public Media because of his vast experience creating content from different perspectives,” said Board Chair Alphonso O’Neil-White. “Tom loves Buffalo and Southern Ontario and is excited to bring his experience as an innovator in radio, TV, and music to serve our communities on both sides of the border.”

    Tom Calderone
“Buffalo is home for me, and being able to lead its public media stations with their rich history and long community partnerships, is an honor,” said Calderone who has been a media consultant since 2018, advising media companies, startups, cable television, and investment firms on the future of streaming services and multi-platform consumption. “I’m looking forward to working with the talented and experienced staff to continue to create high touch documentaries and immersive storytelling series, to broadcast fun and accessible classical music on WNED Classical, and to champion WBFO which is continuously the voice of news and stellar reporting in Buffalo. And I cannot wait for the border to open so I can meet the producers, funders, and organizations we partner with in Canada.”

“I believe in following the audience, studying their video and audio likes and habits, asking them what they want from all our platforms, and delivering that to them. But just as important, leading them to new content and new ideas, especially ‘snackable,’ short-form content that will keep them in our video and audio ecosystem no matter how it is distributed. Our audience expects that from us. Plus, we are coming from a position of strength,” Calderone said.

Calderone served as the Global Head of Content Partnership/Global Head of Studios for Spotify, pioneering the company’s expansion into new areas of audio and video content, including podcasts and mobile-friendly video series. For 10 years (2005-2015), Calderone was President of VH1/Viacom, during which he led the organization into the Top 5 cable channels for adults 18-49 years old. He was Executive Vice President of Music & Talent Programming at MTV/Viacom from 1998 to 2005, during which he introduced new programming such as Total Request Live, MTVIcon, and music documentaries. He also served as Chairman of Save the Music from 2005 to 2015.

St. Louis Radio: Talk Wars Loom

Starting Monday, NewsTalkSTL will hit the airwaves at K270BW 101.9 FM (fed by KLJY 99.1 HD3), with an on-air roster peppered with familiar local voices and one rising star on the syndicated circuit, reports stltoday.com.

“When people tune in they’ll hear voices that they know and trust talking about the issues that impact their city.” said Jeff Allen, co-owner and programming boss of the new station.

The station, which is locally owned and not part of any chain, seems poised to compete for the conservative audience now being served by KFTK 97.1 FM.

    Mike Ferguson
Allen was the longtime program director of KFTK, until he was let go in 2018 after the station was bought by Entercom Communications (now Audacy), which also owns KMOX 1120 AM and several other frequencies.

Longtime STL radio sales executive Joe Rusch is the managing partner of the station, which will operate under the corporate name of Epic STL.

Allen is not the only KFTK alum joining the new station. In fact, much of the on-air talent are alums of STL’s first conservative talk station.  Tohers include: Tim Jones, Vic Porcelli, Tony Columbo, Katie Fitzpatrick, Chris Arps and morning host Mike Ferguson.

On the out-of-town side, the new station will feature nationally syndicated conservative commentator Dan Bongino, show will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bongino’s show has been the most popular pick-up for stations looking to replace the late Rush Limbaugh.

Also, a short 20-minute show from longtime conservative talker Bill O’Reilly will air at 3 p.m. weekdays.

“This is the team that defined conservative talk radio in St. Louis for many years,” Rusch said, “and we are excited about the opportunity to do it again.”

NewsTalkSTL will quickly get conservative talk competition. On July 26, RealTalk 99.3 is scheduled to hit the air. Rick and Tracy Ellis will head-up the effort on KRTK 993. FM Hermann and KVMO 194.3 Vandalia MO.

The station will feature Gateway Pundit editor Joe Hoft in mornings and also carry Dan Bongino from 11am-2pm. Westwood One’s Ben Shapiro will air from 7-9pm followed by simulcasts of One America News in late nights.

Wake-Up Call: Biden Calls Cuba Protests "Clarion Call For Freedom"

POLICE PATROL HAVANA IN LARGE NUMBERS:
One day after thousands of Cubans demonstrated in the capital of Havana and elsewhere in the communist nation in rare anti-government protests not seen in decades, driven by food shortages and high prices amid the pandemic, President Biden called them a "clarion call for freedom" on Monday. Biden said in statement, "We stand with the Cuban people and their clarion call for freedom and relief from the tragic grip of the pandemic and from the decades of repression and economic suffering to which they have been subjected by Cuba’s authoritarian regime. The Cuban people are bravely asserting fundamental and universal rights." Meanwhile, large groups of police patrolled in Havana on Monday, and Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel blamed Cuban-Americans in the U.S., saying they stirred up the protests on social media. He said in a nationally televised appearance, "That’s the way it’s done: Try to create inconformity, dissatisfaction by manipulating emotions and feelings."

➤WARNING ABOUT RARE NEUROLOGICAL REACTION ADDED TO JOHNSON & JOHNSON COVID VACCINE: The Food and Drug Administration announced yesterday that a new warning was being added to Johnson & Johnson's Covid-19 vaccine about a rare, potentially dangerous, neurological reaction, although it's not entirely clear that the vaccine caused it. There have been reports of about 100 of the nearly 13 million Americans who've gotten the J&J vaccine developing Guillain-Barre syndrome, an immune system disorder that can cause muscle weakness and occasionally paralysis that's usually temporary. Of them, one person died and almost all were hospitalized. Most of them were men, many of then aged 50 and older. Guillain-Barre can be triggered by a number of infections, and there have been rare cases after receiving certain vaccines.

➤RECOVERED CONDO COLLAPSE VICTIMS RISES TO 94: The number of victims recovered from the collapse of the Champlain Towers South condominium in Surfside, Florida, rose to 94 on Monday with the recovery of the remains of four more people. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said that 22 people still remain missing. Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said officials planned to increase security at the site to make sure that victims' personal possessions are preserved for their families.

➤TEXAS DEMOCRATS LEAVE STATE TO TRY TO BLOCK REPUBLICAN VOTING BILL: Democratic state lawmakers in Texas left the state yesterday in an effort to prevent passage of a Republican bill with sweeping new voting restrictions in a special legislative session by denying the Texas House of Representatives attendance of enough members to conduct business. More than 50 Democrats flew to Washington, D.C., saying they were prepared to stay there for weeks until the session ends next month. This is the second time Democratic lawmakers in Texas have left to prevent the overhaul of voting laws, which they say will make it harder for young people, people of color, and people with disabilities to vote. Republican Governor Greg Abbott said in a TV interview hours later that he would just keep calling special sessions through next year if necessary to pass the legislation, and suggested the Democrats will be arrested when they return. He said, "As soon as they come back in the state of Texas, they will be arrested, they will be cabined inside the Texas Capitol until they get their job done." But Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer said in D.C., "This is a now-or-never for our democracy. We are holding the line in Texas." The lawmakers' intent in going to Washington is to increase pressure on President Biden and Congress to enact voting rights legislation on the federal level.

➤SEVERAL OF THOSE TIED TO HAITI ASSASSINATION WERE INFORMANTS FOR U-S LAW ENFORCEMENT: Several of the men who've been tied to last week's assassination of Haiti's President Jovenel Moise previously were informants for U.S. law enforcement, CNN reported yesterday, citing sources. The Drug Enforcement Administration said in a statement that one of them was "at times . . . a confidential source to the DEA." The DEA also said that after the assassination, the suspect reached out to his DEA contacts, and he was urged to surrender to local authorities, and the U.S. also gave the Haitian government information that "assisted in the surrender and arrest of the suspect and one other individual." The DEA also said it was aware of reports that some of the assassins yelled "DEA" at the time of their attack, but that none of the assailants was working on the agency's behalf. Haitian officials say the assassination operation involved at least 28 people, many of them Colombian mercenaries hired through a Florida-based security company.

➤STUDY..GETTING A FLU SHOT SLASHES THE RISK OF BEING HOSPITALIZED WITH COVID-19 BY UP TO 60%:  Getting a flu shot could actually help you avoid COVID-19. Researchers in Britain analyzed 75,000 COVID-19 patients, and found those who had received an annual flu shot were 60 percent less likely to end up in the emergency department due to COVID-19 compared to people not vaccinated against the flu. Those who got their flu shot between two and six months before catching COVID also appear to be protected against nasty complications linked to the virus. Researchers say their findings suggest the flu shot could provide increased protection to people in countries where COVID-19 vaccine supplies are limited. It’s thought that getting the flu shot might boost the body’s innate immune system, improving its overall defenses against disease.

➤POPE FRANCIS TO BE HOSPITALIZED A FEW MORE DAYS: The Vatican said yesterday that Pope Francis will remain hospitalized for a few more days as he continues to recover from surgery he had on July 4th to treat a severe narrowing of his large intestine. The Vatican had originally said the pontiff could be released by the end of last week, but said Monday that while he'd finished his post-operative treatment, the 84-year-old would, quote, "remain a few more days to optimize medical and rehabilitation therapy." Francis spoke from the balcony of his hospital suite on Sunday to deliver his weekly prayer in his first public appearance since the surgery.

➤REPORT..GOP'S TOP LAWYER WARNED AGAINST PUSHING FALSE STOLEN ELECTION CLAIMS: The Washington Post reported yesterday that the Republican Party’s top lawyer had warned in November against continuing to push false claims that the presidential election was stolen. Citing an email it obtained, the Post said Justin Riemer, the Republican National Committee's chief counsel, called efforts pushing election fraud claims by some of then-President Donald Trump's lawyers a "joke" that could mislead millions of people and were being "laughed out of court." The November 28th email from Riemer was sent to Liz Harrington, a former party spokeswoman. The Post cited sources as saying some Trump allies, including Rudy Giuliani, tried to get Riemer fired after learning about the email. He still works for the RNC.

➤CYCLIST DIES THREE WEEKS AFTER MAN DROVE INTO RACERS: A 58-year-old cyclist has died three weeks after a pickup driver plowed into a bicycle race in Arizona, injuring several cyclists. Tucson.com reports that Jeremy Barrett had been improving, but suffered a stoke in recent days and deteriorated, with AZ Cycling saying he died Saturday night. The 36-year-old suspect, Shawn Michael Chock, who was shot by police after he allegedly fled the scene, has been charged so far with nine counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, as well as fleeing an accident and unlawful flight. More charges are now expected. He pled not guilty.

➤PEOPLE'S DREAMS ARE CHANGING: The fear and upheaval of our lives caused by the pandemic led many people to have nightmares during the worst of it, and now that we're starting to emerge from the pandemic, with vaccines widely available in the U.S. and many other nations to protect ourselves, people's dreams are changing. CNN spoke to psychologist Deirdre Barrett, an assistant psychology professor at Harvard Medical School, who's been collecting information about our dreams and nightmares since the pandemic sent the world into lockdown. She's collected more than 14,000 dreams, two-thirds of them from the U.S. Unsurprisingly, many of the dreams during the worst of the pandemic revolved around the fear of death, with the virus represented in others by an invasive predator, often insects. People would also dream that they were outside without their mask, whether having forgotten it or it fell off or it was disintegrating, or they were around others without masks, and in these dreams they'd try to get away from others because of fear of being infected. Barrett said dreams began to be more positive last December when it was announced that the vaccines were highly effective and being given emergency use approval. People started having upbeat dreams like happily being in a crowded social situation doing something they like, such as dancing or being at a family reunion or being at a sporting event. Some people were still having mask dreams, but instead of having Covid fear, it was about shame or social embarrassment about what people would think about them for not having a mask, which she said it a more traditional social shame dream, like being someplace in public naked.

➤STUDY..AVERAGE PERSONS KEEPS TWO SECRETS FROM EVERYONE THEY KNOW:  Whether you tend to be a private person or an open book, we all have some secrets, and a recent survey of 2,000 adults in the U.K. found that the average person has two secrets that they keep from everyone. The OnePoll survey for Sky HISTORY found that 20 percent are most likely to keep a secret from their mothers, 16 percent from their best friends, and 16 percent from their partners. The top secrets people said they keep from friends and family are about mental health issues, followed by embarrassing incidents that have happened to them and their internet history. In fourth place was eating/snacking habits followed by hygiene habits in fifth. Rounding out the top 10 were: number of past sex partners; bank/credit card statements; faking an illness in the past to avoid a commitment; affairs/infidelities; and one night stands.

➤COFFEE CONSUMPTION LINKED TO LOWER RISK OF COVID-19 INFECTION:  If you enjoy coffee, go ahead and drink up. Northwestern University researchers found that consumption of at least one cup of regular coffee daily was associated with a lower risk of COVID-19 infection. After adjusting for factors like race, sex, age, and other factors like physical activity, BMI level, and history of certain medical conditions, researchers found “habitual consumption of 1 or more cups of coffee per day was associated with about a 10% decrease in risk of COVID-109 compared to less than 1 cup per day.” Coffee is known to contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and researchers say, “Coffee consumption favorably correlates with inflammatory biomarkers. Taken together, an immunoprotective effect of coffee against COVID-19 is plausible and merits further investigation.”

➤IS IT WRONG TO GO THROUGH YOUR PARTNER’S PHONE? EXPERTS EXPLAIN:  It can be tempting to want to look at your partner’s phone, but you should generally resist the urge. Kurt Smith, who is a therapist who specializes in counseling men, says, “When people sneak a peek at their partner’s phone, it feeds secrecy and distrust into the relationship, both of which are likely to be the primary reasons the person is checking in the first place. So while this may seem, in the moment, as a good idea and justified, it only creates more of the problems that need to be resolved.” Dating and empowerment expert Laurel House adds, “If you’re looking for something inappropriate, you’ll find it. You can twist and mistake words and purposes. You can make assumptions and make up stories.” She also says, “[If] every time you see them on the phone, you wonder who they are communicating with or what they are looking at,” it could be your gut warning you that something is wrong, and you should talk to your partner about what you’re seeing and feeling. The experts say there is one time it’s ok to look through your partner’s phone, and that’s if you do so with permission, and if you’re doing so “to get over cheating when complete transparency is the purpose.”

⚾ALONSO REPEATS AS HOME RUN DERBY CHAMP: New York Mets first basemen Pete Alonso won the Home Run Derby last night for the second year in a row, declaring after his victory, "I’m the best power hitter on the planet." The only other players to win back-to-back derbies are Yoenis Cespedes and Ken Griffey Jr. Alonso hit 74 total home runs in the contest at Denver's Coors Field, the longest of them 514 feet, beating the Baltimore Orioles' Trey Mancini 23-22 in the final round. L.A. Angels star Shohei Ohtani, who's set to both start during the All-Star Game tonight and hit leadoff as DH for the American League, forced two tiebreakers with the Washington Nationals' Juan Soto before losing 31-28 in the second round.

⚾MLB COMMITS $100 MILLION TO HELP INCREASE BLACK BASEBALL PLAYERS: Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred announced before the Home Run Derby last night that MLB will give at least $100 million over 10 years to the Players Alliance, which was launched last year, and help raise an additional $50 million with the goal of increasing the number of Black young people playing baseball and eventually making it into the majors. Radio Talker Larry Elder Enters Race For CA Governor

    Larry Elder

Conservative radio talk show host Larry Elder entered California's Sept. 14 recall election on Monday, bringing a well-known voice on the political right to a muddled Republican field trying to oust first-term Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Elder, whose show is nationally syndicated via the Salem Radio Network, is a regular guest on Fox News. He's dubbed the "sage from South Central" on his website, a reference to the area of Los Angeles where he grew up.

In an interview with The Associated Press, the 69-year-old attorney said he initially was reluctant to become a candidate in a state where Democrats hold a lopsided grip on power in Sacramento. Among supporters who encouraged him to run: fellow conservative radio host Dennis Prager.

Elder said he decided to enter his first campaign after witnessing California's out-of-control homeless crisis, spiking crime rates, looming water and power shortages, and whipsaw coronavirus lockdowns.

Elder stands out as a Black man in a national GOP dominated by whites. He said that reality counters Newsom's narrative that the recall is an "effort led by (former President Donald) Trump white nationalists."

"Do I look like a white nationalist?" Elder asked.

Elder's entry into the race immediately reorders a large GOP field that includes former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer; businessman John Cox, who was defeated by Newsom in 2018; state Assemblyman Kevin Kiley; reality TV personality and former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner; and former U.S. Rep. Doug Ose. He also brings more celebrity sparkle to a race that has lacked a clear front-runner.

"I think this is a race between Gavin Newsom and me. I don't think about the other candidates," Elder said, arguing that his name recognition, outsider status and communication skills separate him from the crowd.

Elder's biography on the website for his radio show calls him "unafraid to take on liberals and the Black Lives Matter movement." He calls for "returning to the bedrock Constitutional principles of limited government and maximum personal responsibility."

ESPN's Smith Apologizes For Comments About Ohtani

Shohei Ohtani and Stephen A Smith

ESPN Sports Anchor Stephen A Smith has apologized to a Japanese baseball player for saying that his use of interpreters in interviews damages the sport.

Smith, who is black, was accused of xenophobia after saying that Los Angeles Angels pitching and hitting sensation Shohei Ohtani's translators negatively impacts Major League Baseball's popularity.

'The fact that you got a foreign player that doesn't speak English, believe it or not, I think contributes to harming the game to some degree, when that's your box office appeal,' Smith said during Monday's episode of First Take.

Smith was fiercely criticized for his comments, but initially resisted backing down.  By Monday night, however, he had changed his mind and issued an apology.

'Let me apologize right now,' Smith wrote on Twitter.

'As I'm watching things unfold, let me say that I never intended to offend any community, particularly the Asian community - and especially Shohei Ohtani, himself.

'As an African-American, keenly aware of the damage stereotyping has done to many in this country, it should've elevated my sensitivities even more.

'Based on my words, I failed in that regard and it's on me, and me alone.'

Smith, who earns $12 million a year in his sports anchor role, said that he had 'screwed up'.

In spite of his perceived language barrier, Ohtani made history on Monday by being named the leadoff hitter and starting pitcher for the American League in Tuesday's All-Star Game.

Radio Increases Reach Of Auto Insurers

Auto insurers, always strong users of AM/FM radio, increased their commitment in 2020 despite the pandemic. Last year, the insurance category increased network radio spend by +26% versus 2019, according to Miller Kaplan.

This week’s Westwood One blog shows how a spend increase on AM/FM radio drives incremental reach, search, and site traffic for auto insurance brands.

The profile of the in-market insurance shopper skews male, has a $75K+ income, and is young with 74% falling in the 18-49 age bracket.
    • AM/FM radio is the ideal medium for insurance brands: The greater the time spent with AM/FM radio, the more likely listeners are in the market for insurance: Nielsen Scarborough reports 90% of those who will switch their auto insurance provider in the next year are reached by AM/FM radio.
    • Versus heavy TV viewers, heavy AM/FM radio listeners are +30% more likely to be in the market for insurance: 23% of heavy TV viewers are extremely likely to shop for insurance in the next 6 months compared to 30% for heavy AM/FM radio listeners.
    • Nielsen Media Impact: AM/FM radio generates a +39% increase in incremental reach among adults 25-34 for five major insurance brands.

K-Pop Billionaire Behind BTS Doubles Wealth

    Bang Si-huyuk and BTS

Bang Si-hyuk, the founder of the agency behind K-pop boy-band sensation BTS, has more than doubled his wealth in a matter of months as shares of his company surged, reports Bloomberg.

Bang is worth about $3.2 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, after Hybe Co., formerly known as Big Hit Entertainment, rose 130% since going public in South Korea in October. When its initial public offering priced, his net worth was around $1.5 billion.

It’s a testament to the popularity of BTS, the band with some of the best-selling K-pop albums of all time. It may also signal optimism about Hybe’s global ambitions after it announced in April the acquisition of the company behind worldwide stars Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande.

    Bang Si-hyuk
Bang, who owns 34% of Hybe and is known as “Hitman” in South Korea, stepped down as chief executive officer to focus on his role as chairman of the board, the company said this month. He will also continue to oversee music production.

Hybe said on April 2 it was paying $1.05 billion for Ithaca Holdings, the U.S. media group behind the careers of Bieber and Grande. Scooter Braun, who led Ithaca, became co-CEO of Hybe America after the deal.

Company filings show Braun holds a 1% stake in Hybe, which is worth $123.7 million. The seven members of BTS, all in their 20s, each have identical shareholdings valued at $18.3 million. Bieber and Grande each hold shares worth $14.3 million.

Bang started the company in 2005 after a career as a music producer. Initially, the business was so quiet that artists only stopped by the office to play tennis matches on the company’s Nintendo Wii, Bang said in a 2017 interview. The firm almost went bankrupt in its early years, he said, before BTS released its debut album in 2013.

The band’s latest hit, Butter, has spent weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Hybe said in its IPO prospectus last year that almost 88% of its revenue in the first half of 2020 came from BTS.

Scooter Braun Sought Help At Trendy Spiritual Retreat

    Scooter Braun and wife Yael

In the months before he separated from his wife, Scooter Braun secretly checked into an “intense psycho-spiritual retreat.”

Back in the fall, sources told Page Six at the NY Post that Braun had entered the seven-day Hoffman Process program, which is all the rage at the moment in LA. But when we reached out for comment, Braun lied, denying that he’d ever been there.

Then in June — shortly before Page Six revealed that he’s separated from his wife, Yael, after seven years of marriage — Braun admitted in a podcast that he had, in fact, gone to the retreat after having the “darkest” thoughts of his life.

“My wife and I began to hear all kinds of rumors, like ‘[Scooter] has gone crazy.’ But it wasn’t that. It was just feeling like I wasn’t present in my life, and [feeling] like the people around me who loved me, I felt their hurt,” he said on Jay Shetty’s “On Purpose” podcast.

“Because, one, we’re all coming in with our own trauma, and weirdly our trauma was matching up, and … I couldn’t fix it. And I’m a fixer. Since I was a kid, I was the guy who was going to make it OK for everybody. And I just couldn’t fix things in this moment in time.”

The super-manager — who counts Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato as clients — said that he “started to spiral.”

He said eventually, “a very dark thought came into my head — the ultimate ‘I’m not enough;’ the ultimate ‘I shouldn’t be here.’ I immediately thought — what are you doing here? And I’ve never gone that dark. And I signed up for the Hoffman Project the next day.”

Later in the podcast, Braun said that he’d made plans to go to the Napa facility four times in the past and canceled each time, but he explained to Shetty why he finally decided to attend.

“You know what happened? My wife Yael, and my children,” he said. “I learned I love someone more than me, and loving them made me go do the work.”

Rumors of disquiet between Braun and the mining heiress and F**k Cancer founder have been rattling around the LA music business for more than a month.

But Page Six reported on Sunday that though the pair have decided to separate, they currently have no plans to divorce, according to sources close to the couple.

On its site, the Hoffman Process — which has treated Bieber, Sienna Miller and Katy Perry — calls the experience “a 7-day soul-searching, healing retreat of transformation & development for people who feel stuck in one or more important areas of their life.”

It promises participants they can “Make peace with your past, release from negative behaviors, [achieve] emotional healing & forgiveness, [discover] your authentic self” and have “improved relationships.”
