Liberty's John Malone: Warner-Discovery Will Be Global Powerhouse

The blockbuster WarnerMedia-Discovery deal is especially good news for HBO Max, billionaire media mogul John Malone told CNBC’s David Faber.

In an interview that aired Monday on CNBC, Malone said his previous reservations about HBO Max’s ability to be a dominant player in the crowded digital-streaming landscape will be addressed once the AT&T-owned service is under the same roof as Discovery.

“I thought they were going to struggle with getting the kind of subscriber growth in the U.S. that they were hoping for. And I think, in fact, that’s true,” said Malone, a Discovery board member whose voting stake in the company is more than 25%.

Malone thinks the new firm could join Netflix and Disney+ as a true global powerhouse.

“I think we are not only going to be the third such platform, but I think we’ll be very competitive with the other two in terms of being able to satisfy the entertainment and curiosity and information needs of the world, basically, a worldwide platform,” Malone said.

Disney+ ended the fiscal second quarter with 103.6 million subscribers, according to the company. Netflix said last month it had almost 208 million subscribers worldwide.

AT&T said in April that HBO and HBO Max had a combined  44.2 million subscribers in the U.S. and nearly 64 million globally.

HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s flagship streaming property, debuted in the U.S. last May and plans an international expansion. In Malone’s view, that push will be aided by Discovery’s global know-how.

Malone made his comments in a wide-ranging interview with CNBC about the deal announced last week involving Discovery and AT&T’s WarnerMedia, which the telecom giant acquired less than three years ago.

If the transaction receives regulatory approval, WarnerMedia’s various media and entertainment properties including CNN, HBO and the Warner Bros. studio would be spun out of AT&T and combined with Discovery’s brands including HGTV, Food Network and Discovery Channel.

It would position the new company — which has yet to receive a new name — as a more formidable competitor in the fiercely competitive streaming video wars. In addition to WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, Discovery’s signature direct-to-consumer platform, Discovery+, launched in January.

Alden Global Closes On Tribune Publishing Acquisition

Without fanfare, regulatory filings indicate Alden Global Capital completed its $633 million purchase of Tribune Publishing late Monday, taking the Chicago-based newspaper chain private and adding the Chicago Tribune and other major dailies to the hedge fund’s growing portfolio.

The Chicago Tribune reports Tribune Publishing CEO Terry Jimenez received $1.734 million in equity compensation, while three other non-Alden board members and the company’s interim CFO also received payouts as a result of the merger, according to the beneficial ownership forms filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The $17.25-per-share buyout was approved Friday by Tribune Publishing shareholders, with 81.28% of the shares not held by Alden voting in favor of the transaction, surpassing the required two-thirds threshold. Tribune Publishing, which trades on the Nasdaq under the symbol TPCO, will be delisted as a result of the transaction, according to the SEC filings.

A New York-based hedge fund with a reputation as one of the industry’s most aggressive cost-cutters, Alden becomes the second-largest newspaper owner in the U.S. behind Gannett. In addition to Tribune Publishing, Alden owns MediaNews Group, whose larger newspapers include the Denver Post, San Jose (California) Mercury News and the St. Paul (Minnesota) Pioneer Press.

In addition to the Chicago Tribune, Tribune Publishing owns The Baltimore Sun; the Hartford (Connecticut) Courant; the Orlando (Florida) Sentinel; the South Florida Sun Sentinel; the New York Daily News; the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland; The Morning Call in Allentown, Pennsylvania; the Daily Press in Newport News, Virginia; and The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Virginia.

While Alden’s $633 million offer is fully financed, the hedge fund can use Tribune Publishing’s cash on hand and reserved the right to have the newspaper chain take on up to $375 million in debt to close the deal, according to its equity commitment letter filed with the SEC.

Tribune Publishing is debt free, profitable and has more than $250 million in cash.

Listeners can expect to hear directly from music's next generation of rising stars and whatever else the TikTok community is vibing to.

Making videos for TikTok is always the highlight of my day, and I'm lucky to have found such a supportive musical community," said TikTok creator Christian Shelton, whose playlist will be one of the first in Pandora's TikTok Tastemakers series. "The playlist I created reflects my love for all genres and features new and old music, a lot of which is inspired by my fans on TikTok! Sun Broadcast Group Launches New Show: Funny Feelings With Scotty

Sun Broadcast Group announces distribution partnership with comedian, author and speaker Scotty Gunther, along with Radio Animal Media Consulting’s Dom Theodore, as they launch “Funny Feelings With Scotty.” This PPM friendly weekend show fuses relationship humor, advice, and hit music to form a perfect show for CHR/Top 40 and Hot AC!

Rich O’Brien, Chief Development Officer at Sun Broadcast Group added, “We strive to find exciting and engaging content for our clients and listeners, and after such a serious, news heavy year, Sun Broadcast Group is excited to team up with Scotty and Dom for this unique show centered on making the audience laugh.”

Wake-Up Call: 14 Killed In Italy As Cable Car Falls

Fourteen people were killed in Italy yesterday when a cable car crashed to the ground on Mount Mottarone, which overlooks Lake Maggiore and other lakes in northern Italy, after the lead cable apparently snapped. A five-year-old Israeli boy who was the lone survivor remains hospitalized with multiple broken bones. Israel's foreign ministry said the boy's parents, brother and two great-grandparents were among the dead, and Italian media said the other victims were all Italian residents. Italy's transport minister said a commission had been formed to investigate the causes of the accident and prosecutors will look into any potential criminal charges. The cable car system, which is popular both with tourists and locals to go up Mottarone, had only reopened a few weeks ago after coronavirus lockdowns were lifted.

➤NATIONAL GUARD MISSION AT U.S. CAPITOL ENDS: The National Guard mission at the U.S. Capitol ended yesterday, more than four-and-a-half months after being deployed in response to the January 6th attack. The Pentagon had announced that an extension of the remaining 2,149 Guard troops hadn't been requested. Thousands more Guard members who'd been deployed in the wake of the attack were previously sent home. Retired Lieutenant General Russel Honore, who oversaw a security review after the attack on the Capitol, told CBS' Face the Nation yesterday that the Capitol will remain protected by Capitol Police, but it will remain closed to the public because of the strain on the force.

➤GEORGE FLOYD'S FAMILY HOLD MARCH, RALLY FOR ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY: A march and rally were held in Minneapolis yesterday by members of George Floyd's family, one of several events planned across the country to mark the one-year anniversary of Floyd’s death on Tuesday, May 25th. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter were among those at the rally in front of the courthouse where former police officer Derek Chauvin was tried and found guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter in Floyd's death last month. Speakers called for justice for the families of Black men killed by police.

➤TWO KILLED AT NEW JERSEY HOUSE PARTY, NO ARRESTS MADE: Two people were shot and killed and 12 others wounded at a house party in southern New Jersey's Fairfield Township late Saturday night. State police said a 30-year-old man and 25-year-old died in the shooting at the '90s-themed party. Two cousins who live nearby said they heard a series of shots, and then party-goers started running into their yards and asking to come into their houses, and cars ran into each other as they tried to drive away, according to AP. No arrests have been made.

➤STUDY..KIDS WHO ARE MORE AGREEABLE GET BETTER GRADES, REGARDLESS OF THEIR ACADEMIC ABILITY:  It turns out teachers can be swayed by your child’s personality when giving out grades. Researchers from two universities conducted an international study, and found that students perceived to be agreeable or conscientious were more likely to be treated favorably when it came to grades. One of the study co-leaders, Dr. Kostas Papageorgiou says, “It was interesting although perhaps not surprising that some teachers seem to award higher grades to students with more ‘desirable’ personality traits, such as high agreeableness. These results suggest that teacher ratings might reflect some conscious or unconscious biases, such as judging more leniently the students that they perceive as more focused on school tasks, who are well behaved in interpersonal contexts and who are more emotionally fragile.

➤IF YOUR ALLERGIES ARE PARTICULARLY BAD THIS YEAR—THERE’S A REASON:  If you suffer with seasonal allergies, you may have noticed they’re worse than usual this year, and it’s not just in your head. According to recent research and forecasting, 2021 is shaping up to be a brutal allergy year, just like 2020, 2019, and 2018 were before it. The length and intensity of pollen seasons are growing, in large part due to climate change. Experts say if the planet keeps warming up, miserable allergies will likely be the norm. Between 1990 and 2018, pollen concentrations in North America increased by 21 percent. Other factors can also contribute to making airborne pollen even more volatile. Internist and immunologist Dr. Tana Elliott explains, “Pollution like diesel exhaust and nitrogen oxide can lead to the creation of super pollen and very irritating air that triggers sneeze and mucus production. Pollen can bind to diesel exhaust and it becomes super pollen—traveling longer distances and being bigger—making it a more potent allergen.” Some experts even say that because we spent most of the last year indoors, we had less exposure to allergens, and so any tolerance we built up in previous years may have waned slightly.

➤'WALL STREET JOURNAL': THREE WUHAN RESEARCHERS HOSPITALIZED IN NOVEMBER 2019: Adding more fuel to the speculation that the coronavirus pandemic may have originated in an accidental leak from China's Wuhan Institute of Virology, the Wall Street Journal reported yesterday (May 23rd) that three researchers from the institute were hospitalized in November 2019, citing a previously-undisclosed U.S. intelligence report. The Journal said the report gives new details on the number of researchers who were sick, the timing of it, and their hospital visits. A National Security Council spokeswoman didn't comment on the report, but said the Biden administration continues to have, quote, "serious questions about the earliest days of the Covid-19 pandemic," and that the U.S. is working with the World Health Organization and other member states for an expert evaluation of the origin of the pandemic, quote, "that is free from interference or politicization."

➤21 ULTRA-MARATHON RUNNERS KILLED IN CHINA IN EXTREME WEATHER SHIFT: An ultra-marathon race led to tragedy in China, where 21 runners died after an extreme weather shift hit the 62-mile mountain race. China's Global Times reported the high-altitude Huanghe Shilin Mountain Marathon began Saturday morning (May 22nd) in Gansu County in sunny weather, but by 1 p.m., there was freezing rain, hail and gale winds lashing the runners, who were wearing just shorts and a T-shirt. The organizers ended the race and a search was launched of the area, which found the 21 dead runners. Another eight had to be hospitalized. Among those who died was Liang Jing, one of China's well known ultra-marathon runners.

➤BUDGET AIRLINE BREEZE AIRWAYS, FROM JETBLUE FOUNDER, LAUNCHING MAY 27TH: A new budget airline called Breeze Airways from the founder of JetBlue will launch on May 27th, after its debut was delayed by the pandemic. Its flights will be concentrated in the Southeast, with flights initially to and from four airports: Tampa; Charleston, South Carolina; New Orleans; and Norfolk, Virginia. Additional flights will be added in June and July, with Breeze to fly as far east as Providence, Rhode Island, and as far west as San Antonio, Texas, by this summer. Tickets are on sale, starting at $39 each way.

➤NOAA PREDICTS ANOTHER BUSY ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON:  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasters are predicting the U.S. will have another “above-normal” Atlantic hurricane season this year. The group is predicting a likelihood of 13 to 20 total named storms, with six to 10 of those named storms becoming hurricanes. They say three to five of the named storms are likely to become major hurricanes, defined as Category 3,4, or 5 with winds of 74 mph or higher. They also noted that El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions are currently in the neutral phase, with the possibility of the return of La Nina later in the season, and that they did not expect “the historic level of storm activity seen in 2020.” Last year was record-breaking, with 30 named storms and 12 landfalling storms in the continental U.S.

Got dinged a few times in the knee in that crowd because no one really gave a s**t, personally. . . . It's cool for Phil. But getting dinged a few times isn't exactly my idea of fun." Koepka, who finished tied for second, has been recovering after injuring his knee in March and having to have surgery.

NYC Radio: NYPR Accused of ‘Campaign’ Against Internal Critics

SAG-AFTRA has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board against New York Public Radio, accusing WNYC Editor-in-Chief Audrey Cooper of waging a “coordinated and aggressive campaign” against internal critics. reports The Wrap.

Audrey Coopeer
“SAG-AFTRA filed this charge in response to a management-driven strategy to silence a thriving newsroom and undermine accountability and transparency by issuing discipline and threats against employees for asking questions and engaging in legally protected activity,” read a statement from SAG-AFTRA, which represents broadcast journalists in addition to screen actors.

“The union also maintains that WNYC management maintained and enforced work rules designed for the purpose of curtailing accountability and transparency and surveilled employees or created the perception of surveillance of employees in their communications with the union and one another,” the statement continues.

The new charges are the latest phase in an ongoing period of turmoil at WNYC that dates back to 2017, when the rise of the #MeToo movement led to misconduct accusations against three prominent male hosts and an ousting of leadership at the station. Goli Sheikholeslami was hired as the new CEO of the station, in turn hiring Cooper as the new editor-in-chief.

But as New York Times media columnist Ben Smith notes, Cooper’s tenure at WNYC has been met with friction between her and staff, particularly in her decision to change the sharp, editorializing voice of WNYC sister website Gothamist and to require radio reporters to file stories for the web. The latter change led to 18-year veteran Fred Mogul being fired by Cooper after she found that he had used credited copy from the Associated Press in the web version of his story, even though that was standard practice for the station prior to Cooper’s arrival.

SAG-AFTRA said in its statement that Mogul’s firing, along with that of the guild’s shop steward, were done ” for indefensible and unlawful reasons that violate the collective bargaining agreement and the NLRA.”

The new complaints come one week after Bob Garfield, co-host of the WNYC show “On The Media,” was fired by the station over bullying allegations following a heated meeting with producers. Another station host, Tanzina Vega, is also being investigated after her own intense exchange with a producer while recording her show “The Takeaway,” last month.

The Advocate.com reports Hanagriff, who's been a midday staple on Guaranty Media's WNXX, said he will continue in a part-time role with the station, sitting alongside Jimmy Ott on his nightly show "Gametime" and anchoring the postgame LSU football show.

Hanagriff said his last day hosting his show "Hangin' With Hanny" will be Friday. He said he's taking a job with an outside job with a new company in July.

Insider Vows To Expose Nashville's 'Good ole' Boys' Network

A former Atlantic Records exec who penned a tell-all about rampant sexism in the music biz has set her sights on Nashville, reports The NY Post's Page Six.

Dorothy Carvello — who started out as music mogul Ahmet Ertegun’s secretary in the ’80s and became the first female A&R exec at Atlantic — published her debut book, “Anything for a Hit: An A&R Woman’s Story of Surviving the Music Industry” in 2018. The explosive memoir dished on abusive execs, and included insider anecdotes on Michael Jackson, Madonna, Steven Tyler, Bon Jovi, INXS and more.

Her follow-up is a novel — but she told Page Six, “All the characters in the Nashville book will be recognizable. People will be guessing.”

Carvello explained of the country scene: “Nashville is a hot market, but it’s a good ol’ boys network. They don’t want to let anyone else in, but they have to, because the business is getting bigger.” She said of execs’ behavior: “There is such hypocrisy. They all belong to a church, and meanwhile they’re breaking every commandment.”

Armed with extensive experience working in the music industry, she said, “I am going to expose the hypocrites in the music business and start outing these people. It’s a closed community. They’ve been running the show for years, and there are no women running record companies. Everyone goes along with the racism and misogyny. They do whatever they want to do.”

Carvello — who’s putting the finishing touches on the tome, “Music City” — told us, “The female artists and executives are cast aside by the men . . . It’s a money train. The book is a microcosm of the abusive music business and how it grinds out artists.”

She’s next shopping the book to publishers.

Trump to Guest On First Dan Bongino show

Former President Trump is slated to appear on the debut episode of Dan Bongino’s radio show Monday, the Hill reports.

Cumulus Media’s Westwood One said in a statement on Friday that Trump will join the second hour of the “The Dan Bongino Show,” which will air Monday-Friday from noon to 3 p.m. Eastern.

Dan Bongino
Cumulus Media announced in March that Bongino, a former U.S. Secret Service agent and conservative radio talk show host, was chosen to take over Rush Limbaugh’s radio show time slot.

Limbaugh, an influential and popular conservative pundit, died at the age of 70 in February after battling stage 4 lung cancer.

The former president had a good relationship with Limbaugh, and awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, during a State of the Union address in February 2020.

The medal came one day after Limbaugh disclosed his lung cancer diagnosis.

Bongino, a stanch Trump supporter, had the former president as a guest on his podcast in late April.

Bongino is also slated to have a weekend show on Fox News, the network announced earlier this month. The show, which will debut June 5, replaces the weekend time slot held by Greg Gutfeld, who’s show recently launched on weeknights.

Fox Nation will also stream “The Dan Bongino Show” starting Tuesday.

Cruz Rips MSNBC's Williams Over 'Kremlin' Label

Brian Williams and Ted Cruz

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) tore into Brian Williams after the MSNBC anchor dubbed the lawmaker "Kremlin Cruz" during a segment last week, reports The Hill.

The dustup came after Cruz criticized a video put out by the Pentagon telling the story of a recruit who marched for marriage equality before joining the armed forces. The senator called it "woke" and "emasculating" to the U.S. military, and shared his comment along with a Russian propaganda video depicting members of its military as strong and masculine.

Williams called the tweet a "remarkably stupid lapse of judgment" and displayed the nick-name "Kremlin Cruz" on an on-air graphic below him as he spoke during the segment on his weeknight show on MSNBC.

Cruz shot back in a string of tweets on Friday.

The Republican senator also rejected the nickname Williams gave him, saying: "I hate communists, my family was imprisoned & tortured by communists, and Brian is a shameless apologist for Russian (and Chinese and Cuban) communists."

Cruz said he was instead arguing "that our military needs to be able to kick the ass of Russian soldiers."

Williams, who stopped hosting NBC Nightly News after being suspended for misrepresenting himself, now anchors a large portion of MSNBC's election night and major political event coverage. Cruz, who won reelection to the Senate in 2018, regularly spars with progressives and political enemies on Twitter and is widely expected to consider a run for president in 2024.

Study: Demise Of Local Newspapers Results In Political Polarization

The death of local newspapers increases political polarization and straight-ticket voting, according to the authors of a new study from researchers at MIT, Yale and French university Sciences Po.

The Hill reports the study found that as national news outlets win out over local papers people view politics through a national lens and split-ticket voting tends to decline.

“An often-unexplored consequence of the disappearance of local news is the fact that local politics will become increasingly determined by national matters,” said Charles Angelucci, one of the study's coauthors.

In turn, voters become more polarized, Angelucci argues, as political discourse is driven less by what happens locally.

A separate study released by the Pew Research Center on Friday found that one-third of large-circulation U.S. newspapers laid off staff last year.

And since 2004, the U.S. has lost 2,100 publications, or one-fourth of its newspapers, according to a 2020 report from the Hussman School of Journalism and Media at the University of North Carolina.

Angelucci’s study examined how the growth of TV affected finances and content at 1,963 daily newspapers from 1944 to 1964 and matched those results against county-level election data on House, Senate and presidential races from roughly the same time.

The era was ideal for studying the decline in local news, the authors wrote, because TV had technical limitations, forcing it to report national news, while newspapers provided both local and national content.

Audacy Sacramento is currently working on a mentorship youth project with the Sacramento City Unified School District that will help students eventually lead and facilitate an annual youth media conference. The goal of this mentorship program is to offer guidance to students as they explore careers in media while promoting diversity within Audacy Sacramento and the media industry at large by mentoring youth and developing aspiring media leaders.

“We encourage the organizations and individuals we will work with to explore the many vocations that the term 'audio’ and ‘radio’ encompasses,” said Kauffman. Westwood One Wins 2021 Deadline Club Award

Cumulus Media’s Westwood One won a prestigious Deadline Club Award in the Radio or Audio Spot News Reporting category for “New York City Protests”, reported by correspondent Steve Kastenbaum. The story aired as part of America in the Morning’s extensive reporting on the unrest in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd.

In announcing the award to Westwood One, the judges noted, “Steve Kastenbaum’s reporting on the civil rights protests in New York City over this past summer demonstrated strong, as well as balanced, reporting. The ‘day-of’ reporting was comprehensive and superb, but the follow-up reporting on peaceful protesters diffusing tensions with police was equally crucial, painting a fuller picture and therefore rendering the story in all the complexity it entailed.”

The Deadline Club, which is the New York City chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, has been supporting and honoring the best in New York journalism since 1925. It adheres to the Mission Statement of the society, which is dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty.

The Deadline Club’s journalism competition is one of the most prestigious in New York and stretches back to 1957.
