Chicago Radio: Best Wishes For Terri Hemmert

Terri Hemmert, the revered longtime WXRT 93.1 FM personality, told listeners Thursday that she’ll be taking time off for cancer surgery.

“Tomorrow will be my last show for awhile,” the midday host said in a note posted at the station’s website. “I’ll be going in for surgery Monday, and will need at least a month to recuperate.”

The Chicago Sun-Times report she said the unspecified cancer was found during the removal of some benign polyps in November. “The good news is it’s early … stage one,” she wrote. “More good news is I have a great medical team who didn’t give up testing.”

The polyp treatment followed a recent knee replacement and a diagnosis of spinal stenosis that also will require surgery.

“I asked if they could just flip me over and do the back surgery while I was there, but that’s not possible,” Hemmert quipped. “Doesn’t hurt to ask.”

Her Sunday morning “Breakfast With the Beatles” broadcasts will continue, cut down from two hours to one, and Hemmert, a 40-year veteran of CBS Radio's WXRT, said she plans to keep listeners updated with posts on her Facebook page.

“You can also send out good thoughts, and if you believe in prayer, I’d appreciate that,” she requested. “My faith has taught me over the years that you don’t pray for magic tricks and easy answers. You pray that you have the strength to handle what ever comes your way.”

January 8 Radio History

KGO Building circa 1926
In 1924...After several late-night test broadcasts, using the experimental call letter 6XG, radio station KGO signed on the air from General Electric's Oakland, electrical facility (the original two-story brick building, constructed specifically for the station on East 14th Street, still exists on the site), as part of a planned three-station network comprising WGY in Schenectady, New York, and KOA in Denver, Colorado.

The General Electric Company had been one of the giants of the electrical industry since its founding by Thomas A. Edison in the nineteenth century. After conquering the worlds of power generation and electric lighting, the company became one of the pioneers in the radio field as a partner with Westinghouse in the new RCA manufacturing conglomerate. As a major early manufacturer of radio receivers, they, like Westinghouse, saw the value in operating broadcast stations to promote the sale of radio receivers. General Electric constructed and operated WGY at its manufacturing facility in Schenectady, New York in 1922.

With the success of WGY, General Electric began making plans to build two other high-powered radio stations. One station was to cover the mountain and plains states, while the third was to be heard on the Pacific Coast. They immediately began investigating the San Francisco area as a base for the Pacific station, because of its location midway along the coast, and because of the ample supply of musical talent in the area. Originally, General Electric announced plans to build the station on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco, and had drawn up plans for several ornamental antenna structures to be built there. However, they finally settled on a site in Oakland, at a G. E. power transformer manufacturing facility there, located at East 14th Street and 55th Avenue. At the time, what is now known as East Oakland was only sparsely populated, and G. E. had just completed their sprawling plant on a 24-acre site earlier that year.

Construction was begun on the studio and transmitter buildings in June of 1923, about a year before the company's third station, KOA in Denver, was begun. The license was applied for and the call letters KGO assigned. Those call letters had previously been held by a radio store in Altadena, near Los Angeles. That station had gone off the air after less than a year of operation.

Meanwhile, newspapers in the area were heralding the coming of a great new super-station to the Bay Area. The "Examiner" headlined, "Plans Ready for Biggest Radio in the West". It announced that the new thousand-watt station would be strong enough to "throw the human voice one third around the world ... more powerful than any station west of Schenectady, New York," referring to G. E.'s eastern operation.

KGO was first known as the "Sunset Station"; at that time it operated with a then-impressive 1000 watts.  As was the custom with early radio stations, the programming consisted of performances by local talent, including the KGO Orchestra which provided some of the music; and a dramatic group known as the KGO Players, which performed weekly plays and short skits, often under the direction of Bay-area drama instructor Wilda Wilson Church. The station's music, which was also performed by other local orchestras and vocalists, would include classical selections as well as popular dance music the next night. Due to GE's involvement in RCA and RCA's launch of the NBC radio network, KGO was soon operated by NBC management as part of the NBC network.

KGO Transmitter Room - Date Unknown
By the 1928 Band Plan, 790 kHz was allocated to Oakland, California, and to KGO, which was then owned by General Electric, on an internationally cleared basis. In order to obtain a clear channel in Schenectady, New York, for what would become the present-day WGY, GE effected a breakdown of 790 kHz, whereby WGY would assume the maximum permissible power, and KGO would be lowered in power to 7.5 kW, which was then lower than the minimum permissible power for a clear channel station (10 kW), but higher than the then maximum permissible power for a regional channel station (5 kW). Both stations retained omnidirectional antennas. Therefore, GE effectively removed from the West one of its eight clear channels and added an additional clear channel to the East thereby giving the East nine clear channels and the West only seven. The other "regions" in the Band Plan all retained their allotted eight clear channels. In 1941, stations on 790 kHz were moved to 810 kHz. On December 1, 1947, KGO was directionalized, and power was increased to 50 kW, the new minimum (and maximum) power for a U.S. clear channel. An article in Broadcasting magazine noted that the increase "retired the nation's oldest regularly operating transmitter -- a 7,500-watter ... in use since Jan. 8, 1924."

In 1926...Soupy Sales, an American comedian, actor, radio-TV personality and host, was born.

He was best known for his local and network children's television show, Lunch with Soupy Sales; a series of comedy sketches frequently ending with Sales receiving a pie in the face, which became his trademark.

Sales hosted a midday radio show on WNBC 660 AM in New York from March 1985 to March 1987. His program was between the drive time shifts of Don Imus (morning) and Howard Stern (afternoon), with whom Sales had an acrimonious relationship. An example of this was an incident involving Stern telling listeners that he was cutting the strings in Sales' in-studio piano at 4:05 p.m. on May 1, 1985. On December 21, 2007, Stern revealed this was a stunt staged for "theater of the mind" and to torture Sales; in truth, the piano was never harmed.  Sales' on-air crew included his producer, Ray D'Ariano, newscaster Judy DeAngelis, and pianist Paul Dver, who was also Soupy's manager.

When Soupy's show was not renewed, his time slot would be taken over by D'ariano. Near the end of his contract, Sales lost his temper on the air, and began to speak very frankly about how he felt he had been treated poorly by the station, and how he felt betrayed that D'ariano would be taking over the show. The show went to break after a commercial - Sales was off the air, replaced without comment or explanation by program director Randy Baumgarten. Soupy would not return to the air. He died October 22, 2009 at age 83.

In 1929...the CBS Radio Network purchased WABC in New York City. The WABC calls were once used previously on CBS Radio's New York City outlet, before adopting their current WCBS identity in 1946. Network founder William S. Paley appeared for the first time on the Columbia Broadcasting System to announce that it had become the largest chain of stations in radio’s short history.

In 1935...Elvis Presley was born. He died Aug. 16, 1977 at 42.

In 1944...Billboard magazine published the first country music chart under the name Juke Box Folk Records. "Pistol Packin' Mama" by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters was its first #1 song.

In 1946...For his 11th birthday, Elvis Presley was taken by his mother to the Tupelo Hardware Company. Instead of the rifle he wanted for a birthday gift, Elvis received his first guitar, priced at $7.75.

In 1995...Eddie Vedder from "Pearl Jam" played host to a national Radio broadcast called "Self Pollution Radio" which originated from Seattle, Washington.

In 2004...John A. Gambling, heir to a WOR-New York morning radio dynasty begun by his father and continued by his son, died of heart failure at 73. Gambling worked at WOR radio from 1959 until 1991 when he retired. He succeeded his father, John B. Gambling, who began the show in 1925. After an eight-year stint at crosstown WABC, John R. Gambling (son of John A., grandson of John B.) continued the family business on WOR until his retirement on December 20, 2013.

CCO Sells Five Markets To Lamar

Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings, Inc., a subsidiary of iHeartMedia, Inc., today announced the closing of two transactions involving the sale by its Clear Channel Outdoor Americas segment (CCOA) of non-strategic outdoor markets for $458.5 million, in the aggregate, to Lamar Advertising Company.

The first transaction is the sale of Reno, NV; Seattle/Tacoma, WA; and Des Moines, IA. On a trailing 12-month basis ended September 30, 2015, these markets generated $40.9 million in net revenues.

The second transaction includes Cleveland, OH and Memphis, TN, which generated $35.6 million in net revenues.

The aggregate purchase price of $458.5 million represents a blended multiple of 12.5x of the five markets’. With these transactions, Clear Channel Outdoor Americas (CCOA) now has operations in 44 of the top 50 U.S. markets.

“Lamar made a very attractive offer that makes sense for CCOA, given our focus on core markets where we have a strong presence and scale,” said Scott Wells, CEO of CCOA. “These transactions give us more focused operations and free up resources to continue to drive innovation in the out-of-home space, and are a win for both companies.”

The Company is considering the optimal uses of the proceeds of the sales.

It's generally beliveed Clear Channel Outdoor would sell the assets to pay off some of the $20.6 billion in debt held by its parent company, iHeartMedia, which was taken private in 2008 by buyout firms Bain Capital LLC and Thomas H. Lee Partners for $19 billion.

Emmis Reports Revenue Drop, RIFs Underway

Emmis Communications Corporation today announced results for its third fiscal quarter ending November 30, 2015.

Emmis' radio net revenues for the third fiscal quarter were down 5.1%. Per Miller Kaplan reporting, which excludes barter revenues and syndication revenues, Emmis' third quarter radio revenues were down 5.2% compared to local radio market revenues up 0.2%.  The company reports Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Austin clusters all beat their markets for the quarter. Radio station in Los Angeles, KPWR-FM, was substantially off  due to the launch of a new direct competitor earlier this year.

Emmis' Publishing division revenues were down 7% for the quarter, and are flat year to date.

Station operating income for the third fiscal quarter was $16.3 million, compared to $18.1 million for the same quarter of the prior year.  For the third fiscal quarter, operating income was $11.6 million, compared to $13.1 million for the same quarter of the prior year.

"Radio industry growth has been disappointing in 2015," said Jeff Smulyan, CEO of Emmis.  "Our markets are down 2.4% through the first eleven months of 2015.  This general decline, coupled with the competitive situation in Los Angeles, led us to take a series of steps yesterday, including staff reductions and pay cuts for senior executives, to restructure our expenses to better align them with the current operating environment. We remain confident that we have the best team in media and the solution, in NextRadio, to return the radio industry to growth.  Our ratings are quite strong in most of our markets, and our investments in content, sales hiring and training, and NextRadio and Digonex will begin to yield stronger results in 2016."

The Indy Star is reporting the Indianapolis-based Emmis laid off 32 workers Wednesday, about 3 percent of its workforce across several markets.

"We've made some changes and they're very painful changes," Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan said during a Thursday conference call. "This is always very, very hard for us."

Two days ago came word that the contract of Deon Levingston as VP/MM in NYC was not being renewed by Emmis.

In St. Louis comes word there were several people let go, including a DOS, GSM, account executives, and on-air personalities.

At least one Indaianapolis on-air employee has been laid off from WIBC 93.1 FM.  Mike Corbin, who was a news anchor and reporter for the station, tweeted Wednesday afternoon that he is no longer employed at WIBC. An Emmis spokeswoman confirmed that Corbin was one of the employees laid off.

Emmis spokeswoman Kate Healey Snedeker said in an email that a number of personnel and nonpersonnel actions were taken "to reduce expenses in its radio, publishing and corporate divisions."

"These reductions," Snedeker said, "which include reductions in force (primarily in Emmis’ radio division) and pay cuts by all senior executives, will help ensure our overall expense structure reflects current operating conditions and provides the flexibility to continue to invest in high-growth opportunities like NextRadio."

On Thursday's earning call with analysts, CEO Smulyan addmitted "certainly has been a challenging quarter for us which is not a surprise given the state of the industry and our particular challenges especially in Los Angeles."

Top Take Aways from the analysts' calls:
  • "Ratings at Emmis are very, very good lately. New York HOT 97 is now number one 18 to 34 in the latest ratings books, that maybe less is tied for 25-54. The Point in St. Louis number one 18 to 34 and 18 to 49 and KSHE our rock station number one 25-54 and our new format KNOU is growing very, very nicely. In Indianapolis Hank-FM number two 18 to 34, B105 is number three 25-54, and in Austin KROX number one 18 to 34 and BOB-FM is our perpetually number one station both 18 to 49 and 25-54."
  • "While we have challenges in Los Angeles we have a remarkably talented team there and really our ratings and performance across the rest of the company are very encouraging. But it has been a challenging quarter not only in the radio business but magazines and I think that comports with what we see as challenges that all media have."
  • "2016 is going to be a better year thanks for politicals."
  • "Yesterday we let 32 employees go. This is always very, very hard for us, that is about 3% of our workforce. These employees will be dearly missed and again this is a very tough situation for us but we felt that we needed to make those changes and we needed to reflect the realities of the economics that we are in."
  • "We also made significant cuts in non-personnel spend. So when combined with personnel cuts, reduced operating expenses by approximately $7.5 million. One of them was challenging and cost reduction actions was that we did not renew the contract of Deon Levingston who was our General Manager in New York City. Deon is a wonderful guy and we thank him for his service. Deon had worked for Emmis and then was brought in when we acquired WBLS and WLIB and a very good guy and this was a difficult decision. Our current General Manager in Indianapolis, Charlie Morgan who has just done a remarkable job here will oversee New York on an interim basis for the next six or so months until we decide exactly what course of action we will follow."

Radio Listeners Are Talking About Powerball

There was no winner in the most recent Powerball lottery draw, the operator of the multistate game said on Thursday, with the jackpot now climbing to an estimated $675 million - one of the largest in North American history.

No Powerball ticket holder had all six numbers to claim Wednesday's $500 million prize, the Multi-State Lottery Association said on its website.

The jackpot will continue to increase, with the next draw to be held on Saturday, it said.

The last Powerball jackpot winner was in November, when a ticket holder from Tennessee claimed $144.1 million. However, that was far smaller than last year's biggest jackpots of $564.1 million in February and $310.5 million in September.

The largest-ever U.S. lottery jackpot payout was in March 2012, when $656 million was won in a Mega Millions draw.

Peoples Choice Disrupted, Ellen DeGeners Big Winner

Ellen DeGeneres poses with her Humanitarian Award and Award for favorite Daytime TV Host
By Chris Michaud

(Reuters) - Ellen DeGeneres, Johnny Depp and hit film "Furious 7" were among the top winners at Wednesday's People's Choice awards, which featured an on-stage incident that recalled Kanye West's Video Music Awards antics seven years ago.

As the team from "The Talk" accepted the favorite daytime TV hosting team award, a young man in a red biker jacket strode onto the stage and seemed to give his name and plug a project as Sheryl Underwood waved him off, intoning "uh uh."

The Talk cast

"The Talk" co-host Sharon Osborne kicked the interloper's backside as he was pushed away and held up her middle finger, while Underwood called "security, security!".  The women then laughed off the encounter.

The disruption recalled West's 2009 stunt at the VMAs, where he pulled a microphone from Taylor Swift to complain that Beyonce should have won.

The rest of the live ceremony, which kicks off Hollywood's annual awards season culminating with the Feb. 28 Oscars, went off without incident.

The Disruption

Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres received a humanitarian award for her work for causes including children in need, the environment, animal rights and health issues.

Joking that she started out hoping "to make people laugh, and to get very, very rich," DeGeneres then struck a humble note.  "Would I call myself the Dali Lama of daytime? No. But I'm sure someone out there has," she said.

An emotional Vin Diesel accepted the favorite film prize for "Furious 7," noting how hard it was to resume filming after the death of co-star Paul Walker in a car wreck.

Johnny Depp, named favorite male dramatic actor, called his storied career "a bizarre road for an actor."

Depp, who has had several box office failures since starring  in the hit "Pirates of the Caribbean" film series, told fans "I'm very appreciative that you've stuck with me," sounding a familiar note among winners who singled out fans for thanks.

The People's Choice Awards are chosen by fans voting online in categories spanning film, television and music. More than 200 million votes were cast, said host Jane Lynch, the star of "Glee".

Dakota Johnson, star of the explicit "50 Shades of Grey,"  suffered an apparent problem with her gown while she accepted her favorite dramatic movie actress award but laughed it off as nothing people hadn't seen before.

Big Bang cast
Other winners at the Los Angeles ceremony included Sandra Bullock as favorite movie actress, "The Big Bang Theory" as  favorite network TV comedy and "Grey's Anatomy," which was named favorite network TV drama.

Streaming Music Up 93 Percent In 2015

By Piya Sinha-Roy

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - U.S. music consumers almost doubled their use of streaming services in 2015, with Apple Inc's new Apple music platform helping boost volume a record 93 percent, Nielsen Music said on Wednesday.

Music consumers used on-demand streaming platforms to listen to 317 billion songs, exceeding projections. Physical album sales declined again, with British singer Adele's "25" providing a bright spot in an otherwise dreary market.

"The amount of exposure Apple gave to streaming can't be understated," said David Bakula, senior vice president of industry insights at Nielsen Entertainment.

About 241 million albums were purchased last year, a 6 percent drop from 2014; 103 million albums were bought in digital formats and nearly 12 percent of all albums were bought on vinyl.

Rock music accounted for a third of the albums sold over 2015, while pop music dominated singles.

But while streaming dominated the music industry with large-scale platforms including Google Play, Amazon Prime Music and Spotify, two of the year's biggest-selling albums, Adele's "25" and Taylor Swift's "1989," were strategically kept off streaming services.

Adele's "25" smashed opening week sales records in November and has clocked a total of 7.4 million albums sold by year end. Taylor Swift had the second biggest-selling album of the year with her "1989" record selling just under 2 million copies.

"What works for Adele and Taylor Swift doesn't necessarily work for everyone else," Bakula said, suggesting the two were exceptions to the rule and that most artists still turned to streaming for a part of their sales.

The third biggest-selling album of the year, Justin Bieber's "Purpose," smashed streaming records in November, with 205 million global streams in its debut week.

Bakula added there was "no question" that streaming had helped curb the online piracy of music that severely hurt the industry in the early 2000s with platforms such as Napster.

R&B and hip hop music accounted for 21 percent of the 317 billion streams consumed on on-demand platforms, and artists such as Drake, Future, The Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar delivered some of the year's top-selling and best-received records.

A steady increase in vinyl sales seemingly defies the masses of consumers flocking to streaming platforms.

"Vinyl is driven by independent record stores and consumers who are into sound quality and tangible, physical products," Bakula said. "Everything about the technology revolution is counterintuitive to vinyl sales, and yet, it still increases."

Netflix Goes Global

(Reuters) -- Netflix Inc's video-streaming service went live in more than 130 countries on Wednesday, covering almost the entire globe except China, in a huge global push by Chief Executive Reed Hastings to counter slowing growth in the United States.

Shares of the company, whose popular shows include "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt", "Daredevil" and "Narcos", jumped 9.3 percent to close at $117.68.

India, Nigeria, Russia and Saudi Arabia were among the major countries where the service was launched, Hastings said at a speech at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

"(This is) much sooner and much more ambitious than expected," Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter said.

Netflix, which had expanded into more than 60 countries before Wednesday's launch, previously said it aimed to reach 200 countries by the end of 2016.

However, all shows will not be available immediately to some Netflix fans.

"We're moving as quickly as we can to have global availability of all the content on Netflix," Hastings said at a press conference after his speech.

U.S. government restrictions on American companies mean Netflix will not be available in Crimea, North Korea and Syria.

The company is still exploring options for providing its service in China, the world's most populous country. Asked if Netflix will make it into the Chinese market in 2016, Hastings said in an interview "we hope so, but you never know."

"With China, you really want to build relationships first, before you get to the practical parts of building a business," he said. "And so we are doing that now and getting to know people, both in government and in partner companies."

"We’ll just keep working on the relationships," he said. "We are very patient. Whether it is 2016, 2017, we’ll just keep working on it."

Netflix on Wednesday added simplified and traditional Chinese to the 17 languages it already supports.

"I think there's been pent-up demand for Netflix outside of the few geographies they were available in previously," Brian Blau, research director at Gartner, told Reuters.

Netflix, which has been spending aggressively to expand globally, has said it planned to "run around break-even through 2016" and then deliver profits.

Westwood One, Benztown Extend Partnership

Westwood One announces it has signed a multi-year partnership extension with imaging powerhouse Benztown, an international radio imaging, production library, programming, jingles and voiceover services company with over 1,900 affiliations across a large portfolio of radio groups on six different continents.

Under the new agreement, Benztown will provide radio imaging, production, voiceover, programming and jingles to Westwood One and to Cumulus' owned and affiliated stations.

In 2011, Cumulus and Benztown signed an exclusive agreement that created one of the radio industry’s largest and highest quality collections of production and imaging libraries. Per the terms of the new agreement, Westwood One will continue to manage affiliation and advertising sales for all Benztown production and imaging libraries and Benztown will direct production of the network’s library offerings. Additionally, Westwood One will manage affiliate and advertising sales for Benztown’s voiceover services available to stations for barter and will serve as exclusive ad sales representation for select Benztown Radio Networks programs and services.

Mike McVay, Senior Vice President, Content and Programming for Cumulus Media said: “The creative services that Benztown provides to our Cumulus O & O stations, and to our network products, is exceptional. This renewal is the highest profile endorsement that could ever be given to any product or service.”

Dave “Chachi” Denes, Benztown President said: “If you were to ask me seven years ago when I got invited to leave the PD chair at KBIG if any of this would be possible, I would have said not in a million years. Working with Mike McVay, Charles Steinhauer, Dennis Green and the programming team at Cumulus/Westwood One is the highlight of my career. I’ve never been happier personally and professionally and I hope that the Benztown story inspires others who have had to reinvent themselves.”
