KC Radio: MLB Royals Radio Team To Return

Royals fans will hear familiar voices during radio and television broadcasts this season, according to
kansascity.com.

Mike Swanson, the team’s vice president for communications and broadcasting, said the Royals Radio Network will return intact. That team is composed of announcers Denny Matthews, Steve Physioc and Steve Stewart, as well as manager of operations Don Free.

Ryan Lefebvre will again call games on Fox Sports Kansas City as well as on radio. Rex Hudler said his option for 2014 was picked up, so he will return to Fox Sports KC.

For Hall of Fame broadcaster Matthews, this will be his 46th season calling Royals games. He again will miss some of the Royals’ extended road trips in 2014.

This will be Lefebvre’s 16th season with the Royals and his 20th calling games in the major leagues. Stewart will be in his seventh season with the Royals, while Physioc and Hudler joined the Royals’ broadcast team in 2012.

Joel Goldberg, who was host of the Royals Live pregame and postgame shows, also is expected to return.

Report: Radio Station Personality Ads Help Drive Trust

Findings from RAB’s Finding Consumer Trends Report show that when consumers are determining their next home improvement project, radio ads influence that decision. Also, listener trust is positively influenced when a favorite radio station personality promotes a particular home improvement project or service – especially among 18-34 year olds.

“The findings from the survey demonstrate radio’s ability to persuade and influence behavior,” stated Erica Farber, RAB President and CEO.  “With 75% of the survey respondents being homeowners, it’s clear that radio is a key medium for home improvement companies and services to reach their target audience.”

Conducted from October 29 to November 19, 2013, this F.C.T. Report survey queried over 12,300 respondents aged 18+ about their home improvement plans, timelines and estimated budgets.  Of those surveyed:

  • 30% plan on starting their home improvement project in the next six months.
  • Kitchens and bathrooms are the top 2 inside home improvement projects regardless of respondent age group or gender.
  • By far, the top outdoor project is the addition of a patio or deck.
  • The majority of respondents are do-it-yourselfers.

While the majority of respondents view themselves as do-it-yourselfers, a large portion also engages a local contractor to complete the project.  When it came to contractor selection, reputation is the most important consideration, outweighing cost and surprisingly online reviews.

“The information from this report provides RAB members with the information they need to drive sales for their stations,” stated Ruth Presslaff, President, Presslaff Interactive Revenue.  “The identification of consumers' home improvement goals and preferences is certain to open doors for radio sellers and create a dialogue with local home improvement businesses and services."

Pubcaster Infighting May Get FCC Scrutiny

A Philo, CA public radio station has a history of internal struggles but its latest feud has taken a new, and possibly unprecedented twist, according to pressdemocrat.com.

A KZYX 90.7 FM board member said this week he will be filing an objection to the radio station's license renewal with the Federal Communications Commission. John Sakowicz said he's hoping the FCC will force a management shake-up at the station.

“I'm trying to save this station, not destroy it,” said Sakowicz, who also serves as the board's treasurer and hosts a program, “The Truth about Money,” on the station.

His move shocked and dismayed the station manager and his fellow board members.

“I find that so disturbing. I think it potentially could be very damaging,” said board member and Willits Mayor Holly Madrigal.

KYZX 90.7 FM 60dBu Coverage
KZYX General Manager John Coate said most of Sakowicz' allegations are false and he doubts the FCC would get involved in station infighting because the issues fall outside of licensing considerations.

But the tactic still is shocking, he said.

“To try to blow the whole thing up is insane,” Coate said. If the station did end up losing its license, it likely would be the end of public radio in Mendocino County, he said.

Sakowicz' allegations are many. They include accusing Coate of withholding financial and meeting information, failing to advertise vacant positions and manipulating board elections. He also has taken issue with Coate's hiring of a news reporter who once worked for Voice of America, a U.S. funded broadcast aimed at international audiences.

The Voice of America “almost by admission is a CIA property.” Sakowicz said.

Twin Cities Radio: Hubbard Impressed With Chris Christie

Stan Hubbard
Twin Cities broadcasting pioneer Stan Hubbard (and my former employer) left a weekend meet-and-greet with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie “very impressed” with what he heard, according to minnpost.com.

Hubbard and his wife attended a gathering Sunday in Palm Beach, Fla., hosted by Ken Langone, founder of Home Depot and a longtime Hubbard friend and business associate.

The Palm Beach event and weekend appearances elsewhere in Florida were Christie’s first ventures out of state since his Jan. 9 marathon news conference in which he apologized for his administration’s involvement in orchestrating a massive traffic jam as political retaliation.

Hubbard joined a group of about 100 Republican donors, but this event, he said, “wasn’t a fundraiser” — just an opportunity to learn more about Christie’s brand of politics.

“Christie comes across as a very warm and genuine person,” Hubbard said.

D/FW Radio: Shannon Murphy Return Gets TV Coverage

Radio show personality Shanon Murphy, known to listeners as Psycho Shanon, returned to the "Kidd Kraddick in the Morning Show" Wednesday after complications she experienced from brain surgery in November.

NJ Radio: Murdered Host's Daughter to Speak

April Kaufman, daughter
Nearly six months after the husband of a murdered South Jersey radio host took legal action to obtain his deceased wife’s life insurance policy, the woman’s daughter will speak.

According to NBC Philadelphia, Kimberly Pack and her attorney, Patrick D’Arcy, plan to read prepared statements addressing the federal lawsuit regarding the May 2012 killing of her mother, April Kauffman, on Thursday at 11 a.m.

A worker found 47-year-old Kauffman, well-known for her job as a DJ at WOND 1400 AM, shot to death in the bedroom of her Linwood home. The next day investigators said the crime was not a random act, but they have yet to make any arrests and even said they lack sufficient evidence to prove a case in court.

About ten weeks after the homicide, an attorney for Kauffman's widower - Dr. James Kauffman- contacted the Transamerica Life Insurance Co. to collect on his wife’s two life insurance policies, which amount to a $600,000 combined payout, according to court records.

But Transamerica did not disperse the death benefits, insisting that a copy of the police report was required by law to make a claims decision. The refusal led James Kauffman to file a lawsuit against the insurance company in July 2013.

James Kauffman, who retained an attorney the day after the murder, denied any involvement in his wife’s death and challenged the notion that it is legally required to prove he was not responsible for her murder to collect the insurance, according to a response filed in October.

R.I.P.: Highway Radio Founder Howard Anderson

Howard Anderson
Howard Anderson, the founder of Highway Radio died this week, according LA Radio.

Howard’s entire professional career has been in broadcasting, beginning in 1948. Prior to creating unique Highway Radio, he served as a staff vice president of Howard Hughes’ Summa Corporation. He joined Hughes in 1972. Anderson was also director of the communications group of Summa with responsibilities for the Hughes Television Network and KLAS/TV-Las Vegas.

The genesis of Highway Radio dates back to the late 1970s, when founder Howard Anderson realized 50% of visitors to Nevada tourism markets came from Southern California. He went to his boss, the late Howard Hughes, and convinced him that reaching visitors on the highway would boost walk-in traffic to Hughes’ casinos: The Sands, Desert Inn, Castaways, Silver Slipper, Frontier, and Landmark.

January 23 In Radio History

In 1930...WIS-AM (now WOMG) in Columbia SC begins radio transmissions

In 1941...WOR-AM in Newark NJ moves to NYC

In 1954...WNBC 660 AM NYC switches from classical to pop

In 1956...In Cleveland, rock 'n' roll fans under the age of 18 were banned from dancing in public unless accompanied by an adult after Ohio police started enforcing a law dating back to 1931.

In 1969...At American Sound in Memphis, between 4:00 and 7:00 a.m., Elvis Presley recorded eight takes of "Suspicious Minds," with future Grateful Dead vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux singing backup. Producer Felton Jarvis decided on a premature fade-out and fade back in near the end of the track to reflect the way Elvis performed the song in his live Las Vegas stage act. It became Presley's 17th and last #1 single in the U.S.

In 1969...At the Apple Studios in London, the Beatles, with Billy Preston playing a Fender Rhodes electric piano, recorded ten takes of "Get Back." None were used for the released single. On January 27 they recorded 14 more takes of the song, eventually selecting Take 11 which was then spliced together with the best take of the coda ending recorded on January 28. A footnote: The stereo single version of "Get Back" was the first Beatles recording to feature Ringo Starr's drum kit in true stereo.

In 1977...Carole King's "Tapestry" became the longest-running album of all time on the Billboard chart as it reached its 302nd week on the list.

In 1984...Country WKHK 106.7 FM in becomes WLTW "Lite FM".

In 1980 Viacom bought the Sonderling chain, and the station adopted a country music format as "Kick" WKHK. The station was known as "Kick 106.7 FM." The format change, from jazz to country, took place in the middle of the night. The change brought many protests from New York jazz fans, and a petition to the FCC to deny the station's license renewal, which was denied. (The WRVR calls were moved to a radio station in Memphis, TN, that had once been owned by Viacom, but is now owned by Entercom.) However, ratings were low, as they were unable to compete with WHN, which also had a country music format at the time.

Then, on January 23, 1984, Viacom dropped country and changed the calls to WLTW. The station became an MOR station known as "Lite FM 106.7 WLTW". Initially they were an easy listening station without anything that would be classified as "elevator music". At this point, the station played music from such artists as Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, the Carpenters, Dionne Warwick, Kenny Rogers, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, Barry Manilow, Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor, and the Stylistics. The station also played softer songs from such artists as Elton John, Elvis Presley, the Beatles, the Everly Brothers, the Righteous Brothers and Billy Joel. The station wouldn't play any new music except for new songs by artists that were familiar to listeners of the station. With this format change, ratings did increase from its previously low levels.

(Almost immediately after the call letter switch, the WKHK calls were picked up by an FM station at 95.3 in Colonial Heights, Virginia that was also doing a country format. That station still has the WKHK calls and is now Heritage-owned Richmond, Virginia Country station "K95".)

By the late 1980s, WLTW started to play songs from such artists as Whitney Houston, Chicago, Foreigner, the Doobie Brothers and Bruce Springsteen. As other competing New York City stations changed their focus, the station stayed with their soft adult contemporary format, even though they were phasing out songs from artists such as Frank Sinatra, Barry Manilow, and the Carpenters. At this point, the station's ratings were at or near the top compared with other New York City radio stations.

For many years actress Teri Garr was seen in television commercials promoting the station. In later years animated commercials were used with Lite music playing around offices and homes

In 1986...The first Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held in New York City. Inaugural inductees included Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, James Brown, Sam Cooke, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Everly Brothers, Little Richard and Fats Domino.

In 1987... Bob "Bob-A-Loo" Lewis - WABC - WABC FM - WCBS FM died.

NYC Radio: Hot 97 DJ Mister Cee Opens Up About Sex Scandal

He confessed his penchant for gay prostitutes in a riveting radio interview four months ago, but Mister Cee remains adamant he's not gay.

Mister Cee
In a new interview with GQ magazine, The Hot 97 DJ described his interest in transgender hookers as an eccentric, kinky obsession.

"Absolutely not," he told GQ when asked point-blank if he's gay.

"And it's nothing — it's no offense to transgender women, but I only get with transgender women for one thing and one thing only, and that's for oral sex," he said. "Like I said: I never had sex with a man. I never had sex with a transgender woman."

The beloved 47-year-old deejay, whose real name is Calvin Lebrun, said he's remained single since a video of him soliciting sex from a man in drag surfaced online last September following multiple arrests for solicitation and public lewdness.

"At this point in my life, I can't even begin to try to be in a serious relationship with a woman," Lebrun told GQ. "That's the point that I'm at now: What do I want? Where am I at? Now that it's out in the open — everybody knows, I know — where am I going from here?"

The wide-ranging interview, shared exclusively with the NY Daily News ahead of next month's issue, delves into Lebrun's sexual history and the start of his walk on the wild side.

He said his interest in paid sex began after a girlfriend broke his heart in 2000.

Cluster Mate Urban AC WVAZ 102.7 FM was off 6.7--6.4 and dropped from its usual #1 perch to come in #2.

Mike Lee
Chicago Media blogger Robert Feder notes this year’s shares were up over the same period in 2012, when WLIT had a 10.0 share overall and a 10.3 share in the 25-to-54 demo. Mick Lee, program director and afternoon host, attributed the boost in part to the station’s rebranding last June from Lite FM to 93.9 My FM and its format adjustment from adult contemporary to a more current-based hot adult contemporary.

“We’ve had great listener response since the launch of Chicago’s New 93.9 MYfm,” Lee said. “Our positive momentum heading into the holiday month was a factor in the year-over-year Christmas music ratings increase.”

D/FW Radio: Pyscho Shannon Returns To Kraddick Show

Shannon Murphy
The producer of the Kidd Kraddick in the Morning radio show will be back on the air Wednesday morning, according to nbcdfw.com.

For the last few months, Shanon Murphy, known as Psycho Shanon to radio listeners, has been off the air after undergoing brain surgery in November.

The "Kidd Kraddick In The Morning" personality was diagnosed with a brain tumor in October. The tumor was benign, but Murphy underwent surgery to remove the mass in November.

Not long after Murphy's surgery, doctors were concerned about her operation wound and readmitted her to the hospital in December.

Now, three months after her initial tumor diagnosis, she has been cleared by doctors.

"I'm glad it's finally ending and that normalcy is in the future," Murphy said. "I know the prayers and stuff have done a whole lot in helping me get through this and some of the complications, I'm good as new!"

Murphy admits, she thinks someone was looking out for her referencing the morning show's namesake, Kidd Kraddick, who died unexpectedly in July.

"I have to think he's been up there watching over me and he's been telling the powers that be, you better do what she needs you to do, or I'm gonna haunt you," she laughed.
