Hot 97's longtime morning show "Ebro in the Morning" abruptly ended on Firdsay, after 13 years, with veteran DJ Funkmaster Flex set to take over the slot starting Monday, December 15.
The iconic New York hip-hop station WQHT (Hot 97) confirmed that Funk Flex, a 30+ year staple recently in evenings, will host mornings "until further notice" following the sudden cancellation of the show hosted by Ebro Darden, Peter Rosenberg, and Laura Stylez.
Darden claimed on social media that the decision by owner MediaCo stemmed from his outspoken progressive views, accusing management of prioritizing profits over investment in hip-hop culture. He directed fans to the show's YouTube channel for future content, while syndicator Superadio pledged to continue the "Ebro brand" on new platforms.
Co-hosts Rosenberg and Stylez expressed gratitude for the run, with Rosenberg calling it a "childhood dream" and hinting at exciting next steps.
The shakeup follows a year of changes at Hot 97, including earlier lineup shifts, and coincided with rival station 94.7 The Block parting ways with its morning and evening hosts. This marks a significant reset for NYC hip-hop radio as terrestrial stations navigate evolving listener habits.
