Katy Perry: I Kissed the Ground And I Liked It

Katy Perry back on Earth

On Monday, April 14, Blue Origin’s all-female crew, aboard the New Shepard rocket, soared to the edge of space from West Texas, accompanied by a heartfelt moment from Katy Perry. The pop star, one of six women on the flight, sang a few lines of “What a Wonderful World” as they floated above Earth.

Back on the ground, Perry, 40, knelt and kissed the soil, joined by her fiancĂ©, Orlando Bloom, and daughter, Daisy, who watched the launch. People reports CBS News’ Gayle King, another crew member, called Perry’s rendition of the Louis Armstrong classic the “best part” of their 10-minute journey past the Karman line.

King, 70, shared on Blue Origin’s livestream that Perry sang only after the zero-gravity sensation faded. “We kept asking her to sing, but she wouldn’t—until then,” King said, noting Perry chose the song over her own hits like “Roar” or “Firework.”

Perry explained she picked the tune “for the benefit of Earth,” aligning with Blue Origin’s motto, though the company’s private spaceflights continue to spark debate.
