R.I.P.: Jim McGaw, Veteran Madison Radio Personality

Classic Hits WOLX 94.9 FM personality Jim McGaw died Sunday.

McGaw helped so many people wake up every morning for the past 11 years on WOLX, but his voice was heard in town for much longer, according to a posting on the station's website.  Jim had been on the air in Madison for about 40 years.  Before coming to WOLX you could hear Jim on Magic 98. He started his career on the legendary WISM in Madison.

McGaw was the hardest working and most thoughtful person in radio.  He was always willing to help and wanted to do whatever he could to make the place where he worked better.

He was a great entertainer, but was so humble about what he did.  On the air, Jim always had some quick comment about life or what was going on in the world that would make everyone laugh.

He truly loved his listeners and wanted to make your drive to work, school or home from a third shift job fun and entertaining...even if he only had your attention for a few songs.

Jim had some health problems in the last few years, but never complained. He always said he didn't want to let his co-workers or his listeners down by missing a day on the air.

We all here at WOLX can't believe we won't hear his infectious laugh in the hallways anymore.  One thing we all know is that Jim McGaw was doing what he loved right until the very end.

“Jim was the hardest working and thoughtful person in radio,” an article from the Madison radio station stated. “He was always willing to help and wanted to do whatever he could to make the place where he worked better.”

McGaw was on the air in Madison for about 40 years. He was at WOLX for 11 years. Before that he was on Magic 98 (WMGN) and he started his career on WISM.
