NYC Radio: WABC GM...Digital No Longer The Shiny New Thing

Chad Lopez, the president of WABC’s AM news talk radio, sheds light on the industry’s recent boom and the evolving role of digital media. Here’s what he shared:

Digital’s Initial Surge: When digital media emerged as the new shiny thing, big brands eagerly jumped on board, resulting in explosive growth. However, that initial excitement is wearing off.

Broadcasting and Sustainability: Traditional broadcasting faced challenges due to the complexity of managing multiple platforms. Sustainability required a balance between digital innovation and the enduring power of traditional media.

Radio’s Unique Appeal: Radio offers a one-to-one connection with listeners, creating a theater of the mind. Streaming platforms have also popularized radio shows, with audiences tuning in from 173 countries (although some countries restrict content access).

According to Lopz while digital had its moment, radio’s timeless allure and personal connection continue to shine. Phones and radio remain a potent combination, transcending borders and captivating audiences worldwide.
