Israel vowed to escalate its response to an attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas with a ground offensive, while U.S. President Joe Biden pledged support for Israel and issued a warning to anyone who might seek to take advantage of the situation. Israel said dozens of its fighter jets struck more than 200 targets overnight on Wednesday in a neighborhood of Gaza City that it said had been used by Hamas to launch its unprecedented wave of attacks.
Gaza's health ministry said at least 900 people have been killed and 4,600 wounded in the crowded coastal enclave. On Saturday, Hamas gunmen from the Gaza Strip rampaged through parts of southern Israel, in the deadliest Palestinian militant attack in Israel's history. Israel's military said the death toll in Israel had reached 1,200 and more than 2,700 people had been wounded. "We have sustained extremely heavy casualties," military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus said in a video briefing on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Babies beheaded, grandparents slain and families torn apart - the full horror of 'Israel's 9/11' was starting to emerge last night. Hamas gunmen massacred 40 children in one farm settlement alone, their small bodies lying in their rooms riddled with bullets. And as shellshocked survivors told their stories, one bereaved grandson, Shmuel Harel, told me: 'They are the new Nazis. This was a holocaust, pure and simple.' He said his terrified 90-year-old grandmother's last moments were being dragged into her living room and shot twice in the head. A sobbing Israeli woman said she had to listen in helpless horror as her 12-year-old autistic daughter was kidnapped while clinging desperately to her grandmother. In Israel, @MattGutmanABC shares a direct glimpse of the sheer brutality Hamas terrorists have unleashed on Israeli villages near the Gaza border. A screenshot from a video has revealed the chilling moment Hamas butchers arrived in an Israeli village, where they murdered at least 100 people, including babies. The image, verified by CNN, shows Hamas militants on motorbikes wielding guns entering kibbutz (community) Be'eri, just three miles from the border with Gaza. The footage is believed to show the terrorists arriving around 7am, just half an hour after they breached the border wall between Gaza and Israel, CNN reported. More than 100 bodies of murdered residents of the kibbutz were later discovered. Some of the victims had been beheaded, including children and elderly civilians. The Israel Defense Forces acknowledged on Monday that Be'eri, just three miles from the Gaza border, was 'very badly hit.' 'We thought we would need more rooms (to house the evacuees). We didn't need all the rooms,' IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Richard Hecht told CNN.

➤BIDEN CONDEMNS ATTACKS: President Biden condemned Hamas’s attack on Israel as an “an act of sheer evil” that left more than 1,000 civilians dead, including at least 14 American citizens. The Israeli military massed forces for a ground invasion of Gaza and warned of a lengthy, destructive war. Biden said the U.S. was providing additional military assistance. The fight has abruptly upended Biden’s efforts to bring stability to the region and is the latest foreign-policy setback for his first term as president. Hamas militants raised millions in cryptocurrency to fund the Saturday attack, according to a review of Israeli government seizure orders and blockchain analytics reports.

➤U-S SENDS WARSHIPS: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized the US for sending a group of warships to the eastern Mediterranean in a show of solidarity with Israel. “What is the US aircraft carrier doing in Israel?” Erdogan said in a joint press conference with visiting Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer in Ankara, Turkey’s capital. The Turkish leader said the US warships will cause “massacres” in Gaza and accused the US of aiding “terrorist” groups in the region, citing American presence in Syria. Turkey has launched air raids against US-backed Kurdish militants in Syria, holding them responsible for the Oct. 1 suicide bombing in Ankara. The US responded by shooting down a Turkish drone. Erdogan’s rebuke of American policies toward Israel and Palestinians follows Saturday’s surprise attack by Hamas militants on the Jewish state. US and Turkey are both members of the NATO military alliance.

➤McCARTHY ON THE FENCE: Ousted US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy says he isn’t seeking a restoration as party leader — at least for now. The 58-year-old Californian, after suggesting Monday that he’d be willing to return to the post, pivoted Tuesday and said he’s advised his supporters not to nominate him. Yet he didn’t rule out taking the post again. “There are a number of members who want me to become speaker again. What I’ve asked them is not to nominate me,” McCarthy said on Fox News Radio.BHe indicated that he would wait on the performance of the two announced candidates to replace him — Representatives Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Jim Jordan of Ohio. His campaign announcement video, filled with references to baseball and his career, opens with a voice-over of an announcer calling a home run and ends with Mr. Garvey declaring: “It’s time to get off the bench. It’s time to put the uniform on. It’s time to get back in the game.”Watch Rep. ➤SANTOS CHARGED AGAIN: George Santos has been criminally charged with stealing the identity of his donors and using their credit cards to spend tens of thousands of dollars. Prosecutors said some of that stolen money ended up in his own bank account. The 23-count indictment replaces one filed earlier against the New York Republican charging him with embezzling money from his campaign and lying to Congress about his wealth, among other offenses. Last week, his former campaign treasurer agreed to plead guilty to fraud. The new charges include allegations that he charged more than $44,000 to his campaign over a period of months using cards belonging to contributors without their knowledge. In one case, the 35-year-old charged $12,000 to a contributor's credit card and transferred the 'vast majority' of that money into his personal bank account, prosecutors said. He has previously maintained his innocence, insisting he is the victim of a 'witch hunt.'
