Wake-Up Call: J6 Committee Subpoenas Trump

The House committee tasked with investigating the January 6th 2020 attack on the U.S. Capitol voted unanimously yesterday to subpoena former President Donald Trump. The vote was taken at the end of what is expected to be the last public meeting of the committee before it issues its final report.

During yesterday’s televised hearing, the committee showed previously unreleased video of protesters storming into the U.S. Capitol interspersed with footage of House members from both parties calling for the assistance of law enforcement and the National Guard in regaining control of the building.

Trump responded to the news with a post on his Truth Social app but did not say whether he would honor the subpoena. His post read: “Why didn’t the Unselect Committee ask me to testify months ago? Why did they wait until the very end, the final moments of their last meeting? Because the Committee is a total ‘BUST’ that has only served to further divide our Country which, by the way, is doing very badly - A laughing stock all over the World?”

➤SUPREME COURT REJECTS TRUMP DOCUMENTS CASE: The Supreme Court denied a request from former President Trump to intervene in his dispute with the government over classified documents seized from his Mar-a-Lago home in August. The court’s refusal to act means that a special master appointed in the case will not be permitted to review 100 documents marked “classified” that were removed in the FBI raid.

💸SOCIAL SECURITY RECIPIENTS GET A RAISE: Social Security recipients will get an 8.7 percent cost-of-living increase in their monthly payments to help them cope with higher prices. That’s the largest increase in 40 years. The higher payments will begin at the start of 2023.

➤PARKLAND SHOOTER SENTENCED TO LIFE: A jury decided to sentence Nikolas Cruz to life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing 17 people at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018. The prosecution argued for the death sentence, citing the heinous and calculated nature of the crime. The public defenders representing Cruz asked for mercy based on his troubled family history and mental health issues.

➤WALL STREET STAGES A MASSIVE COMEBACK: Stock prices made a massive comeback yesterday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 828 points, closing at 30,039 in spite of more bad news about inflation. ➤COVID IS BACK IN SHANGHAI: A flareup of COVID cases in Shanghai has forced a shutdown of some schools, bars, gyms and movie houses there. Only 38 new cases of COVID have been reported, but that’s enough for China’s “COVID zero” policy. The city of 25 million people is China’s financial hub.

➤STUDY: DEMENTIA CLUES APPEAR 9 YEARS BEFORE DIAGNOSIS:  A Cambridge University study indicates more can be done to treat dementia before serious symptoms arise. Researchers collected the health histories of participants and found those who went on to develop Alzheimer's and dementia had poorer reaction times and number recall ability than those who remained healthy. These differences showed five to nine years before an official diagnosis. "If we can find these individuals early enough, we'll have a better chance of seeing if the drugs are effective," Dr. Tim Rittman said. Once patients are diagnosed, the diseases are much harder to treat.

📱STUDY: MORE THAN 5 BILLION PHONES WILL BE THROWN OUT IN 2022:  Can you help cut down on E-waste? Research from the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Forum estimates that over 5 billion phones will be thrown away this year...more than enough to stretch around the entire earth. Since cell phones and other electronics contain useful materials, like silver and gold, they can be recycled instead. "These devices offer many important resources that can be used in the production of new electronic devices or other equipment, such as wind turbines, electric car batteries or solar panels," Magdalena Charytanowicz said.  Instead of tossing your old phone or keeping a broken tablet in a drawer, go green and recycle your E-waste! Today, October 14th, is International E-Waste Day.
➤EARTH’S ANIMALS ARE IN DECLINE: The world’s populations of living creatures have declined by an average of 69 percent in the past 50 years, according to the Living Report. The biennial report is prepared by the World Wildlife Fund and the Zoological Society of London. It concludes that the world’s animals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles are being wiped out by forest clearance, resource consumption and pollution. The report’s authors are urging world leaders to agree on a plan to cut carbon emissions to help slow the destruction.

🏀EASTERN MICHIGAN’S BATES REINSTATED: Eastern Michigan University basketball star Emoni Bates has been reinstated to the team, the university said. A statement from the university said that felony charges against Bates have been dismissed. Bates was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and “altering ID marks” after the vehicle he was driving was pulled over by police for running a stop sign on September 18th. Media reports at the time suggested that the vehicle and the gun belonged to a member of Bates’ family. The local prosecutor’s officer would not confirm that the charges will be dropped.
