TV Ratings: Ian Was The Big Attraction


The Weather Channel reached its biggest audience in five years last week when Hurricane Ian made its destructive landfall on Florida's west coast.

The average audience of 3.4 million people last Wednesday was more than any other day for the network since Hurricane Harvey deluged Texas with record amounts of rainfall in 2017, reports AP News citing data from the Nielsen company.

The network’s peak day came despite other cable news and broadcast networks also devoting resources to the storm, and a myriad of streaming options that gave people many different ways to follow Ian and its aftermath.

For example, the free streaming service Local News Now, which is owned alongside The Weather Channel by the Allen Media Group, had a record-setting day for usage last Wednesday, the company said. Through the service, people could watch local news coverage of Ian from markets in Tampa, Fort Myers and Orlando in Florida.

Allen would not give precise figures on how many people used the service.

Another new wrinkle from the Weather Channel app were screen views that allowed users to watch the storm’s progress through fixed cameras placed in Ian’s path, in Fort Myers Beach, Punta Gorda and Venice, Florida, for example.

The average consumer who used the app spent a staggering four hours there on the day the storm hit, the Weather Channel said.

Fox News Weather, a streaming service that debuted a year ago, easily had its most-used day ever last Wednesday, although Fox also wouldn’t provide specific details. During three overnight hours after the storm hit, Fox News Channel simulcast the coverage on the Fox Weather stream.

NBC was the winner again during the second week of the new television season, averaging 6.1 million viewers in prime time, Nielsen said. CBS averaged 5.7 million, ABC had 4 million, Fox had 2.2 million, Univision had 1.3 million, Ion Television had 900,000 and Telemundo had 820,000.

More Americans tuned into the evening news than usual this past week, undoubtedly interested in the networks’ live, on-the-ground coverage of Hurricane Ian as the Category 4 storm leveled southwest Florida.

ABC’s “World News Tonight” won the evening news ratings race, averaging 8.4 million viewers. NBC’s “Nightly News” had 7.1 million and the “CBS Evening News” had 5 million.

Norah O’Donnell, Lester Holt and David Muir were all on the ground anchoring their respective newscasts from Florida, albeit for varying periods of time.

According to TV Newser citing Nielsen live-plus-same-day data for the week of September 26, World News Tonight with David Muir averaged 8.51 million total viewers, the newscast’s largest audience since the week of March 7, and 1.47 million adults 25-54, the newscast’s largest A25-54 audience since the week of April 11. With those numbers, World News Tonight has defeated its competition from NBC and CBS 200 of the past 201 weeks in average total viewers—and 129 of the last 131 weeks among adults 25-54.

ESPN was the most-watched cable network, averaging 2.15 million viewers in prime time. Fox News Channel had 2.12 million, MSNBC had 1.15 million, HGTV had 796,00 and CNN had 756,000.

TV Newser reports cable news attracted more adults 25-54 than usual last week, with the growth likely driven by interest in breaking news information about Hurricane Ian and its lethal path across the southeast. CNN, MSNBC and Fox News saw growth in the primetime demo relative to the previous week.

In regard to Fox News, the network has now achieved 39 consecutive weeks as the most-watched on all of basic cable (not just cable news) in the 24-hour daypart—and 85 consecutive weeks as the most-watched cable news network with its Nielsen ratings performance during the week of Sept. 26, 2022.

According to live plus same day data from Nielsen in total day (6 a.m.-6 a.m. ET), Fox News averaged 1.49 million total day viewers and 218,000 adults 25-54. The 1.49 million is +4% from what the network averaged during the previous week (Sept. 19)—and the 218,000 in A25-54 is +6% from that same week.

Fox News dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 in total primetime cable viewers behind ESPN, whose Monday Night Football coverage lifted it to the top of basic cable.

In terms of individual programming, The Five is the most-watched cable news show for the sixth consecutive week. The news talk panel program averaged 3.34 million total viewers during the week of Sept. 26, up slightly from the prior week. Tucker Carlson Tonight is second place in total viewers (3.18 million at 8 p.m.), Jesse Watters Primetime (2.81 million at 7 p.m.), Hannity (2.62 million at 9 p.m.) and Special Report with Bret Baier (2.51 million viewers at 6 p.m.) round out the top five.

Tucker Carlson Tonight returned to No. 1 on cable news among adults 25-54, averaging 495,000 viewers from the measurement at 8 p.m. The Five ranked No. 2 (451,000), followed by Jesse Watters Primetime (372,000), Hannity (369,000) and Special Report (346,000). Anderson Cooper 360 made a rare appearance in the cable news top 10, coming in at No. 9 among adults 25-54 (277,000).

The SEC on CBS topped the ratings charts for a third-straight week as Alabama-Arkansas led the way in week five.
