Indy Radio: Emmis To Shutdown Sports WFNI At 1070 AM

After decades on air, WIBC's original 1070 AM broadcast frequency will fall silent "indefinitely" starting Aug. 2. The current sports/talk format of WFNI The Fan also included 93.5 and 107.5.

The tower site for the former WIBC towers has been sold, and the towers will be coming down.

Emmis Communications, the parent company of WIBC and The Fan, is working to find the best solution for the future of the 1070 signal.

“As long time owners of the 1070, we are working diligently on finding the next great use for the signal,” said Jeff Smulyan, founder and chairman of the board of Emmis. “We were offered a wonderful opportunity to monetize the property, and felt it was our obligation to explore that. Ultimately, it made the most sense.”

1070 AM (50 Kw-D, 10 Kw-N)

The frequency broadcasts via a six tower array, with four of those in use during the day. Broadcasts began at the site in 1966. WIBC went on the air October 30, 1938, operating for 69 years as an AM station on 1070 kc.  The call letters and news/talk format moved to 93.1 FM in 2007.

More than one year ago, Emmis had the tower site for 1070 AM rezoned for mixed-use commercial, office, and residential developments.
