DC Radio: WFED 1500 To Air Capitals, Wizards


The NHL Washington Capitals and NBA Washington Wizards have reached an agreement to air broadcasts of their games on Hubbard Radio WFED 1500 AM, Monumental Sports & Entertainment announced Wednesday.

WFED 1500 will serve as the flagship station for each team’s Radio Network, carrying Wizards and Capitals games plus pre- and postgame shows on one of the region’s strongest radio signals.

All Capitals games will also be broadcast on the 24-hour radio channel, Caps Radio 24/7, devoted specifically to the Capitals and NHL. Caps Radio 24/7 will exclusively broadcast the Capitals regular season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday with coverage beginning at 7:45 p.m.  All Wizards games will be also be broadcast on the Wizards Mobile App for listeners within 150 miles of Washington, D.C. and on NBA Audio League Pass throughout the United States and Canada.

Capitals radio play-by-play announcer John Walton will return for his sixth season of calling the action, while former Capital Ken Sabourin enters his 14th season of providing analysis for all Capitals games. The Capitals pre and post-game show will be hosted by Ben Raby.

The Capitals Radio Network includes 14 different radio stations this season. Geographically, the Capitals Radio Network now reaches audiences from Pennsylvania to North Carolina.  The Capitals Radio Network currently broadcasts on six stations in Virginia. In addition to the six different affiliates in Virginia, the Capitals Radio Network broadcasts on two stations in Maryland, D.C. and Pennsylvania, and one station each in North Carolina and West Virginia.

In addition to broadcasting all Capitals games, Caps Radio 24/7 will continue to provide instant news and access to the Capitals, including live game audio, exclusive Capitals-related hockey content throughout the day. The channel, which has had over 140,000 unique listeners since station launch in April, 2015, is available through the Caps Mobile App by accessing the “Radio” button at the bottom of the home screen, through WashingtonCaps.com and also through TuneIn radio, a free app that helps people find and listen to music, sports, news and talk content on the web. TuneIn is utilized by more than 50 million active monthly listeners to radio stations worldwide. Caps Radio 24/7 listeners have consumed over 258,000 listening hours since the launch, with more than 432,000 listening sessions.

Dave Johnson, entering his 20th year as the Wizards play-by-play voice, will be joined by analyst Glenn Consor, who begins his 10th season. The tandem will anchor the pregame show and Consor host the postgame show. In addition to calling the game, both broadcasters will engage fans during in-game chats on WashingtonWizards.com and via Twitter (@WashWizards, @davejsports and @GCtalks).

The Wizards Radio Network will include 13 different radio stations this season.  Those affiliates include six stations in Virginia, three stations in Maryland, two stations in West Virginia and one station in North Carolina.

The Wizards and Capitals will also partner with WFED and WTOP 103.5 FM, WFED’s sister station, for a variety of promotional, charitable and community outreach initiatives.
