The Beatles Are Teasing Us

The official website of The Beatles started teasing a big announcement Saturday.

A video shows a countdown from ’10’ to ‘1’.  1 is the name of the Fab Four’s best-selling hits collection. Originally released in November, 2000, it has sold more than 30m copies.

The official Twitter account for the estate of George Harrison retweeted the countdown video over the weekend, teasing “a major announcement!”.

Beatles fans on Twitter and YouTube have begun speculating what could be coming; guesses range from a video clip collection on DVD to newly-unearthed material.

The video, which has no sound and was also sent out by email and posted to run in a continuous stream on the wall of their official website, shows the “1” album design and a countdown of numbers from 10 to 1. It concludes with “The Beatles 1” cover layout as on the album, but the numbers are colored red on a yellow background, instead of the yellow numbers on a red background on the album release.

Word is that more information will be out on Tuesday.

Some sort of DVD release of greatest hits or promotional videos Blu-ray is the most prevailing theory, held by several people, including both Chris Carter, host of "Breakfast With the Beatles" at noon ET Sundays on KLOS 95.5 FM in Los Angeles, and Mitch Axelrod of the podcast Fab 4 Free 4 All. That's something that was hinted at online well over a year ago when the idea of a long-awaited release of a DVD or Blu-ray of the Beatles videos was among a number of things leaked then quickly taken offline.

To further that thought, remastered Beatles promo videos have been showing up on an irregular basis on YouTube.
