Akron Radio: WNIR Weekend Talker Bob Earley Walks

Bob Earley
Bob Earley, a host on talk-radio station WNIR 100.1 FM for close to a decade, resigned Friday morning after a disagreement with management, according to ohio.com.

Bill Klaus, WNIR CEO and station manager, said, “We had a disagreement in the direction of [Earley’s] weekend program and he chose to resign.”

He declined to elaborate.

Earley said the disagreement began with his plan to have Jennifer Downey, president of erotic-goods chain Ambiance, on his show Sunday. Downey has often appeared in local media, and those appearances are especially common around Valentine’s Day.

According to Earley, Bob Klaus — Bill’s brother, and WNIR’s president and general sales manager — at first approved Downey going on Earley’s show, but later balked. After some back-and-forth, Bob Klaus finally said no.

As a local concert promoter and event chairman of the Rockin’ on the River concert series in Cuyahoga Falls, Earley said he also had a business connection to Ambiance as one of the sponsors of Rockin’ on the River. He was not sure if the chance of frank talk about sex was the only thing worrying the Klauses, or if the Ambiance/Rockin’ relationship was part of the problem.

Earley has been a substitute host on the station since 2005 and has hosted a Saturday and Sunday evening show since 2009. His departure continues a string of changes at the station; besides Piatt and Fuller, WNIR personalities Howie Chizek and Tom Erickson died in June and November 2012 respectively, with Chizek succeeded by Denning and Erickson by Jim Isabella.

  1. Hope that all can resolve this "pissing" contest. Always liked hearing Bob on Saturdays and Sunday nights as one of the WNIR family members. Hearing Mike Gallagher in his stead left me rapidly turning the channel. If there is nothing left to be resolved, at least Laura Ingraham would be good to hear again........

    1. Good for the Klauses. Right decision. Bob's show leaned too much to sex. He did not need to make WNIR a rated x station. There is enough of that on TV.

    2. You are part of the reason why america is falling behind. I liked his show, you did not but it was not all sex. The things WNIR at time bleeps and does not talk about is amazing for a station that says they are a news staion.

  2. I think Earley could have treaded the line. I listened... some nights he's boring or certainly uninteresting. But Gallagher? Nope. His live 2 hour show on the AM dial is tough to choke through.

  4. Howard Stern left for "greener" pastures on satellite radio. I am
glad he has gone to a venue where those that want to listen to his warped sense of right and wrong pay to do so. Bob's show was not close to anything like Stern's but there shouldn't be anyone that disagrees that his show relied on titillation to draw in those who feed on this type of entertainment. Like the Sunday shows that target a certain demographic, his show had a captive audience that will now need to look elsewhere to get their fix of high school level entertainment.

  9. I had listened to WNIR for over 50 years, from waiting for the school bus in the morning, to waiting for my Grand Kids to get off one. The decline began with Howie's passing and it's only gotten worse. I hardly ever even tune it in anymore as the current offering is just plain lame. Don't wish anything bad for anyone, but ya reap what ya sew.

  10. I have listened to WNIR since the game radio days. Here's how I see it.

Morning Show - Not funny or one bit entertaining. Good thing they give away food and tickets to listen to them.

Howies Show - They hired this goof to replace Howie... WOW....Trivia, stupid music clips and frog singing. He actually thinks he can sing....Double WOW

Rush Golic Show - Need I say more, a poor blend of Fox News and Rush. YUCK

Tom Erickson Show - Every time I tune in one of four subjects are taking place.

    1. Tearing down Obama and the coming revolution.

    2. How tough the host is, (punches through walls etc.) blah blah blah.
How well he treats women and how much he respects them etc. (Just get a girlfriend or something) I'm tired of this bantering to position yourself in your personal life.

    3. Can't get his computer to work, he spends time each hour just talking about how he can not access his computer or talking about the stations phone systems, BORING.

    4. Serial callers who call every day, same bullshit, to make themselves feel like they are important or their opinions actually matter. GET A LIFE. Restrict these callers to once a month, not once a day or calling every show as many do.

    1. wow.. I'll help you locate Joe Finan's secret grave; sound like you liked listening to him/his dead air.

You haven't listened to "Ericson show" since he has died two years ago.
So you don't "listen" or listen very well to WNIR .. try turning MSNBC down.

  11. WNIR is a joke. Its not talk radio, its a soap opera and a bad one at that! They are amazing with the stupid censorship of callers, been listening to REAL talk shows since the 80s and have never heard anything like it! Sunday's are totally unlistenable. What a shame.....
