Huntington Radio: The ‘X’ Flips From Active To Classic Rock

A long-running metal and modern radio rock station is now in the history books.

On Tuesday, Sept. 10, CCM+E/Huntington announced that WAMX 106.3 FM has been transformed from active rock into a classic rock station, 106.3-FM, The Brew.

According to the herald-dispatch.com, the loss of WAMX leaves the locally owned Kindred Communications station WCMI 92.7 / 98.5 FM The Planet as the only modern rock station in the region.

Arbitron reported that The Planet had a 4.2 share (12+) in the spring ratings compared to a 2.8 share for WAMX.

Jim Davis, regional program manager for Clear Channel Media and Entertainment West Virginia, said they're excited for a fresh change to a format that's always played well in the Tri-State.

First hitting the airwaves in 1997 as the Tri-State's first active rock station, X106.3-FM became known as the destination for new and modern rock music through the distinct voices of a slew of colorful DJs that included through the years Paul "Ozz" Oslund, Robin Wilds, Erik Raines, Brandon Woolum and Ryan Zipperian.

"Personally, I hate to see a legendary rock station bite the dust," said Mike Kirtner, who heads up Kindred Communications. "The larger corporations tend to do things based on curtailing expenses. Rock is alive and well in the area. One has to go no further than Rally on the River to witness the format's impact. Over 40,000 people attended rock concerts that were hosted by The Planet. We're here to stay."

  1. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. As usual. The people with the combined iq of neg 50 make another great decision. Pathetic. Pathetic. I hope the ones who made this decision end up on the streets, homeless and hungry. Might teach them a lesson.
