Wake-Up Call: Russians Revolt

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced yesterday that up to 300,000 Russian citizens will be pressed into military service to pursue the war against Ukraine. He characterized it as calling up the military reserves, but all men of military age are considered reservists in Russia. More than 1,200 protesters were arrested as demonstrations against the war broke out across Russia. Protesting in Russia is punishable with up to 15 years in prison. Others are trying to leave the country, but tickets quickly sold out to Turkey and Armenia, where Russians can travel visa-free.

Putin also made a barely-veiled threat to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine: “I want to remind you that our country also has various means of destruction… and when the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, to protect Russia and our people, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal,” he said. “It’s not a bluff.”

Hours later, President Joe Biden addressed the United Nations and said that Russia “has shamelessly violated the core tenets of the United Nations Charter. He also reiterated U.S. support for Ukraine. The U.S. has contributed at least $16 billion to Ukraine’s defense.

Here’s How Media Budgets Are Trending for 2023

Video looks to be a big winner of resource investments this year and next, according to the latest annual Media Reactions study from Kantar. Based on a global survey of almost 1,000 senior marketers, the report finds that online video and video streaming have the most positive momentum this year, and occupy 2 of the top 3 spots next year.

Online video ads are expected to see the largest positive change (percentage of marketers increasing budget/resource allocation minus percentage of those decreasing budget): a net of 61% of marketers and agencies expect to increase their budgets for online video in 2022 (the broadest consensus of any medium). Furthermore, a net of 66% project an increase for video ad budgets next year, also the highest percentage for any medium.

A recent forecast from Zenith found that for the first time in the past decade, a medium other than social media will be the fastest-growing over the next 3 years: online video, which is forecast to increase by 15.4% on average annually between 2021 and 2024. Meanwhile, within the US, the world’s largest ad market, digital video ad spend is predicted to overtake traditional TV ad spend this year.

Byron Allen To Pursue McDonald's Discrimination Suit

McDonald’s and media mogul Byron Allen will face off in court next year over Allen’s $10 billion racial discrimination lawsuit, a federal judge in Los Angeles ruled.

The NY Post reports the case — in which the comedian turned media mogul accuses McDonald’s of deliberately choosing not to advertise with black-owned media outlets, including his AMG Entertainment Studios and Weather Group — has been simmering for more than a year.

Allen’s complaint alleges that McDonald’s gives less than $5 million of its $1.6 billion annual television advertising budget to black-owned media despite the fact that black consumers represent about 40% of McDonald’s US sales.

In December, Allen’s case was dismissed by US District Judge Fernando Olguin, but Allen amended the suit and it was reinstated shortly thereafter. Last week, Judge Olguin denied McDonald’s motion to dismiss the case again.

Warner Music Names Robert Kyncl Next CEO

Warner Music Group Corp. named departing YouTube business chief Robert Kyncl as its next chief executive, betting on a tech veteran as the industry expands into social media, games and the metaverse.

The Wall Street Journal reports Kyncl will succeed Steve Cooper, who said he would be stepping down in 2023 after 11 years on the job as the music company’s longest-running CEO. The two men will serve as co-CEOs in January, and then Mr. Kyncl will take the position solely and assume Mr. Cooper’s board seat on Feb 1.

Robert Kyncl
Mr. Kyncl’s move from YouTube to Warner Music—the label behind Ed Sheeran, Madonna and other stars—speaks to the industry’s search for revenue beyond streaming, and the company’s strategy of filling the top role with an executive with a business background rather than a music insider.

Mr. Kyncl, 52 years old, said late last month that he would be leaving Alphabet Inc.’s YouTube. During his 12 years there, he helped build the Google unit from an upstart into a video giant. Before that, Mr. Kyncl spent more than seven years overseeing content partnerships as a vice president at Netflix Inc. Mr. Kyncl, who got his M.B.A. from Pepperdine University, didn’t come up the ranks in the music industry.

But he isn’t a stranger to the business. For years, YouTube has been the largest music-streaming platform globally by listeners, a popular destination for younger users to discover new music. Mr. Kyncl had a hand in negotiating licensing deals with labels and publishers.

Recorded Music Revenues Grew 9% First Half of 2022

The market for recorded music in United States grew in the first half of 2022 but slowed its expansion from the record pace set in 2021.

According to Celebrity Access citing data published by the Recording Industry Association of America, U.S. recorded music revenues in the first half of 2022 rose 9% to $7.7 billion at estimated retail value.

That growth was driven by paid subscriptions for music streaming services, which hit a record high of 90 million, with revenue of $5 billion in the first half of 2022, up by 10% year-over-year.

Overall streaming, including paid subscriptions, ad-supported services, digital and customized radio, and licenses for music on social media and digital fitness, generated $6.5 billion in the first half of 2022, though the share of revenue from streaming remained flat at 84%, year-over-year.

Digital downloads continued their long, slow descent into irrelevance, with revenue from digital tracks dropping by 19% to $113 million in the first half of 2022, while digital albums declined 20% to $122 million. In aggregate, digital downloads, including ringtones and other formats, accounted for just 3% of overall recorded music revenue.

However, physical sales, after a big year in 2021, continued to grow. Revenues from vinyl albums grew 22% to $570 million, and vinyl’s share of the physical market increased from 68% to 73%, while CDs slid to just 2% or $200 million, accounting for 26% of physical revenue.

Charter Communications Ordered To Pay $1.14B After Fatal Stabbing

A Texas family has been awarded $1.14 billion in damages against Charter Communications in a lawsuit over the fatal stabbing of their elderly mother and grandmother nearly three years ago. according to CBS News

Dallas County Judge Juan Renteria ordered Charter to pay the family of Betty Jo McClain Thomas in a final judgment released Monday. The settlement comes after former Spectrum cable technician Roy Holden Jr. admitted to murdering the 83-year-old Thomas in her home in December 2019.

A Texas jury also found that Charter "knowingly and intentionally committed forgery with the intent to defraud or harm" the plaintiffs by faking Thomas' signature on a forced arbitration agreement after she had already died.

He named himself the "Father of Radio," with this famous quote, "I discovered an Invisible Empire of the Air, intangible, yet solid as granite."

Lee de Forest
In 1906 de Forest invented the Audion, the first triode vacuum tube and the first electrical device which could amplify a weak electrical signal and make it stronger. The Audion, and vacuum tubes developed from it, founded the field of electronics and dominated it for forty years, making radio broadcasting, television, and long-distance telephone service possible, among many other applications. For this reason de Forest has been called one of the fathers of the "electronic age".

He is also credited with one of the principal inventions that brought sound to motion pictures.

De Forest was a charter member of the Institute of Radio Engineers. DeVry University was originally named De Forest Training School by its founder Dr. Herman A. De Vry, who was a friend and colleague of de Forest.

Philly Radio: Audacy Picks Successor To Silverman At KYW

Audacy has promoted from within to replace the recently departed Alex Silverman as brand manager of KYW Newsradio.

The Philly Business Journal reports Kristina “Luca” Koppeser will succeed Silverman, who left for sister station KNX News 97.1 FM in Los Angeles, while also serving as director of digital content. She will oversee the station’s content strategy, talent, operations and branding. Koppeser joined the station in July 2021 as digital managing editor.

KYW 103.9 FM/1060 AM also named Podcast Director Tom Rickert, who has been with the station for 11 years, as assistant brand manager. He will retain podcasting oversight.

Kristina Koppeser
“When Alex went to LA and I was trying to figure out what the strategy would be for the next chapter of the newsroom, I wanted to continue to lead in a multi-platform way,” said Audacy (NYSE: AUD) Philadelphia Market Manager David Yadgaroff. “Alex was a traditional radio journalist with a multi-platform mindset. [Koppeser's' a multi-platform journalist who now has had experience in radio. So it's like it's a continued evolution for the blending of the different platforms that we choose to deliver the content on.”

Yadgaroff said he liked Koppeser’s leadership style, problem solving ability, passion and the way she looks at opportunities from multiple angles.

Unlike Silverman, Koppeser does not come from a traditional radio background and that’s fine with Yadgaroff.

BIA Advisory: Hubbard's WTOP Was Top Billing Station in 2021

In a streak lasting since 2014, Hubbard Radio, LLC’s WTOP-FM in Washington, DC was once again the top billing radio station in 2021. BIA estimates that WTOP-FM pulled $70 million in revenues in 2021, up 12.9% from $62 million in 2020. This surpasses the overall growth rate of 10.3% that BIA forecasts for over-the-air radio from 2020 to 2021, as the industry started to pull out of the pandemic slump. WTOP-FM is also the only station on this list to surpass its pre-pandemic revenue figure of $69.8 million in 2019.

Hubbard Radio, LLC garnered 30.5% of the over-the-air revenue in the Washington, DC market in 2021… 29.1% of which went to WTOP-FM. The station is still down from $39.0 million in 2019. Last year’s Number 4 station, WSB(AM) in Atlanta, Georgia, owned by Cox Media Group, Inc. fell off the list and landed at Number 12.
