July 24 In Radio History

In 1933…The soap opera "The Romance of Helen Trent" began its 27-year run on CBS Radio. Virginia Clark played Helen for the first 11 years, then Julie Stevens took the role for the next 16 years.

In 1965...Bob Dylan released "Like A Rolling Stone" to Radio

In 1978...WKTU 92.3 FM changed to disco at 6pm.

In June 1975, 92.3FM was, owned by the San Juan (Puerto Rico) Racing Association flipped to Soft Rock and became known as Mellow 92 WKTU. That station had very low ratings and had no effect on Top Rate Musicradio 77 WABC.   But on July 24, 1978, at 6 PM, WKTU abruptly dropped its Soft Rock format in favor of a disco-based top 40 format known as "Disco 92". By December of that year, WABC was unseated, as WKTU became the No. 1 station in New York City. The first "disco" ratings saw WKTU with 11 percent of the listening audience—a huge number anywhere, let alone in a market the size of New York City—and WABC dropping from 4.1 million listeners to 3 million, losing 25 percent of its audience practically overnight.

After this initial ratings tumble, WABC panicked and began mixing in several extended disco mixes per hour and sometimes played two back-to-back. Some of the disco songs ran in excess of eight minutes. What regular listeners heard was a major change in sound. While the station continued playing non-disco and rock songs about a third of the time, familiar format had seemed to disappear and as a result, WABC began to lose its identity. In late spring 1979, Billboard magazine reported that Rick Sklar had demoted program director Glenn Morgan to "moving carts" instead of making programming decisions. WABC's numbers dropped for four consecutive ratings periods. WABC evenutally dropped music for talk in May 1982.

In 2000…Singer/songwriter Smokey Robinson began a two-year stint as an evening radio host on KCMG in Los Angeles. "Intimate With Smokey Robinson," aired from 8-10 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

In 2005...NYC Personality Joe O’Brien died in a car accident at age 90.

Joe O'Brien
Joe O'Brien was one of the WMCA Good Guys on WMCA Radio in New York City.  O'Brien began his career in 1935 when he got his first radio job with WMCA 570 AM in New York City. He worked at the station for 34 years.

The Good Guys had the same clean-cut hairstyles, wore matching suits and worked together at record hops and personal appearances. They also sang as a group and released an album. During that time, Mr. O'Brien was the No. 1 morning man in New York City.

In 1970 he left for WNBC 660 AM, where he handled morning duties until he was replaced by Don Imus in 1972. Mr. O'Brien then went to WHUD in Peekskill, N.Y. He retired in 1986, but continued to do weekend specials for WHUD until 2000.

Boston Radio: WEEI's Kirk Minihane Steps In It Again

  • If Erin Andrews ‘Weighed 15 Pounds More, She’d Be a Waitress’
Kirk Minihane
Kirk Minihane returned to WEEI 93.7 FM Wednesday morning after calling Erin Andrews a “gutless bitch” on air last week, but the co-host of the “Dennis and Callahan Show” wasn’t totally contrite, according to boston.com.
“I  will say this. I think she stinks at her job. I don’t think she’s very smart, I don’t think she comes across as very smart. I think FOX only hired her because she’s good-looking. I think if she weighed 15 pounds more she’d be a waitress at Perkins. That’s what I believe.”
Minihane was not suspended for his original comments last week. He had a scheduled vacation starting the day after he made them, and he apologized for what he said.

Minihane’s original point about Andrews stemmed from an interview the FOX reporter conducted with St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright during the MLB All-Star Game. Wainwright told reporters that he gave Derek Jeter a couple of pitches to hit because it was his last All-Star Game, then backed off those comments to Andrews. Andrews let the pitcher off the hook a little too easy, telling Wainwright, “Well, we appreciate you clearing that up. Don’t you love social media?”

Minihane took exception to the cupcake sideline reporting, saying in part, “What a bitch. I hate her. What a gutless bitch. Seriously, go away. Drop dead. ... He told reporters he threw a couple of pipe bombs. So how is that social media’s fault?”

NYC Radio: Angie Martinez Hitting 'Restart' At WWPR

Angie Martinez
Angie Martinez says she didn’t jump from Hot 97 to Power 105 on some passing whim.

She told David Hinckley at the NY Daily News, “I was really hitting a restart button.”

Martinez, who held down afternoon drive on WQHT 97.1 FM for almost two decades before starting last Thursday on the 2-6 p.m. shift at CCM+E's WWPR 105.1 FM Power 105..

Her switch sent shock waves through the radio community, a response she says shocked her in turn.

“I was overwhelmed,” she says. “I had no idea. My housekeeper called to ask if I was all right, because on her way home she heard people talking about me on the streetcorner.

The reason actually was simple: Martinez is one of the defining voices of New York radio. Evidence: On her first day at Power 105, Jay Z called in.

Happy as she was to talk with him, her restart involves a different kind of call.

“I want this show to sound different,” she says, “and one thing is to be more listener-interactive. I used to do that, but the show had gotten away from it.”

  • Revenues up 1% totaling $1.6 billion, with slight growth at Media+Entertainment
  • OIBDAN1 reached $487 million, including a 5% increase at International Outdoor, a slight decrease at Media+Entertainment and an 8% decline at Americas Outdoor
  • CC Media's loss of $186.6 million was down from a year-ago profit of $7.2 million amid higher expenses, including higher sports programming costs, and a loss on the extinguishment of debt.
CC Media Holdings, Inc. today reported financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2014.

“Our growing digital and events businesses continued their strong momentum during the quarter, further demonstrating the unique value that Clear Channel delivers to advertisers through our diverse set of media assets,” Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bob Pittman said.

“At iHeartRadio, we introduced an even more personalized listener experience with the release of iHeartRadio 5.0 and grew our registered users by 50% year over year -- surpassing the milestone of 50 million registered users in record time.  The first-ever iHeartRadio Music Awards, broadcast live on NBC, was a huge success -- attracting more than 65 million votes through Twitter and Facebook, with #iHeartAwards trending #1 on Twitter throughout the night and number one for Nielsen’s Twitter TV ratings for the entire week.  In addition, we showcased the vision and innovation of our entire company to some of the world’s largest brands and agencies at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity last month, while several of our clients -- including British Airways -- earned prestigious awards.”

Richard Bressler
“We continued to reinforce our foundation for growth this quarter and make progress in advancing our strategy to become one of the leading technology-fueled multi-platform media and entertainment companies in America.  In another significant step, we have named Brian Lakamp our President of Technology and Digital Ventures,” said Rich Bressler, President and Chief Financial Officer.

“We grew overall revenues despite some market challenges, and I am especially pleased with our efforts in International Outdoor and Media+Entertainment.  Also, the changes we’ve made in Americas Outdoor position us well for the second half of the year.  Underscoring our continuing financial flexibility, the quarter’s $850-million offering of senior notes was well received by the markets. In addition to our debt refinancing activities, which have created the right runway for us to keep focusing on growing our Media+Entertainment and Outdoor businesses, we’ve continued to make good on our commitment to control costs through operational efficiencies.”

Boston Radio: Talk Radio Needs Revival

Michael Harrison
On of the authorities on all things
radio — Talkers magazine publisher Michael Harrison — said the future of Boston talk radio “troubles” him and he hopes it can be revived by Internet radio clicking with listeners.

Harrison, interviewed Tuesday on Boston Herald Radio’s “Trending Now,” recalled the Hub of yesteryear, saying Boston was “one of the modeled cities for talk” at the beginning of the
modern era of talk radio more than two decades ago.

“You had great talk radio personalities, great talk radio stations. You had people like Jerry Williams and Gene Burns,” Harrison said. “It was just an amazing town for talk radio.”

But as radio became “more corporatized” over the years, Harrison said, the quality of Boston talk radio has gone “downhill.”

And he hopes Boston Herald Radio, an Internet radio station launched about a year ago, “can tap into the fact that the natural tendency of the Boston population is to like this kind of thing.”

Boston’s talk radio dial has seen a lot of shakeups in recent years, including the switch of WTKK 96.9 FM from a talk station to music last year.

As for ratings, WTKK’s former talk competitor, WRKO 680 AM, was in a dismal 25th place during the spring ratings period among coveted 25- to 54-year-old listeners. WBUR 90.9 FM was 14th, while its NPR competitor, WGBH 89.7 FM, was 17th. News station WBZ 1030 AM was 15th.

Asheville Radio: CCM+E Launches 'The Brew'

CCM+E/Asheville has launched The Brew on Translator W249AR 97.7 FM / WKSF 99.9 HD2 FM, featuring a healthy dose of 1980s rock.

The station made its debut Tuesday afternoon. The Brew takes its name from its music mix and Asheville’s place as a craft beer capitol, OM Jeff Davis said.

It will be a “nontraditional” station, focusing on music which will range from 1970s to 2000s hits “and maybe even a little 60s,” Davis said. “We’ll play about every kind of music from Top 40 to Hot AC, classic rock, mainstream rock and a little bit of country,” he said. “It’s basically a nice replacement for an iPod. It will never live in any world too long.”

Artists will include U2, Katy Perry, Boston, Bon Jovi, Lady Antebellum, Michael Jackson and Madonna.

W249AR 97.7 FM (100watts) 60dBu Coverage
It will also be streamed through the iHeartRadio.com web site. The FM signal should be received throughout Buncombe County, and parts of Haywood, Henderson and Madison counties, Davis said. It is the seventh radio signal operated by Clear Channel here.

Obama Campaign Donors Gets FCC Waiver

David Grain
A private-equity company owned by a campaign donor to U.S. President Barack Obama won a waiver from the Federal Communications Commission that may help it bid in airwaves auctions, according to Bloomberg.

Grain Management LLC may not have qualified for benefits reserved for small businesses because airwaves leases to AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. caused it to exceed the program’s income limits, the company had said in an FCC filing. The agency has adopted a waiver, an FCC spokesman, Neil Grace, said Tuesday in an e-mail without providing details.

Grain Management, based in Sarasota, Florida, invests in media and communications and is controlled by David Grain, according to the company’s March 4 filing asking the FCC to waive the rule.

David Grain contributed more than $60,000 to Obama’s presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee in 2008, and $22,500 in 2012, Federal Election Commission filings show. He was also one of Obama’s top fundraisers for the 2008 election, bringing in $200,000 to $500,000, according to the campaign.

The FCC, led by Democratic Chairman Tom Wheeler, voted 3-to-2 along party lines behind closed doors July 21 to waive the rule, allowing the company to seek bidding credits that offer discounts on winning bids, according to people with knowledge of the vote who asked for anonymity because the proceedings hadn’t been made public.

The airwaves auctions, which were authorized by Congress, are intended to raise at least $28 billion for U.S. national priorities including debt relief. A sale earlier this year of 10 megahertz raised $1.56 billion.

Cumulus Rallies B'Day Card Shower For Danny

Birthday Greetings from NASH Nights' Shawn and Elaina
Cumulus Media along with The Bert Show, Night Live with Adam Bomb, NASH Nights Live, and America's Morning Show are rallying around a little boy in Foxboro, MA, who is battling a rare form of inoperable brain cancer.

Danny Nickerson
Five-year-old Danny Nickerson, of Foxboro, Massachusetts, will turn six on July 25. He was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor this past October -- one of the most chemotherapy-resistant cancers. As a result, he has since stopped going to kindergarten.

The boy gets lonely from time to time, and is always happy to get cards with his name written on them.

“He can recognize his name now,” Carley Nickerson, Danny’s mother told ABC News. “When he saw his name on the package from magical fairies on Easter, he was so happy.”

But the packages and cards stopped after Easter.

“He had 33 radiations from November through December last year,” Nickerson said. “We are now getting chemo therapy every two weeks.”

Doctors tell Nickerson that less than 10 percent of the children diagnosed with this type of cancer live longer than 18 months.

Danny’s birthday is July 25. All cards can be mailed the Nickerson’s home addressed:

Danny Nickerson, P.O. Box 212, Foxboro, MA, 02035.

July 23 In Radio History

In 1937…"Les Miserables" was broadcast, the first radio drama produced by Orson Welles and the fledgling Mercury Theatre group.

In 1937...legendary Top 40 DJ, Robert W. Morgan was born.

Robert Wilbur Morgan is best known for his work at several stations in Los Angeles, California, in particular KHJ 930 AM.

Morgan also did morning drive at KMPC-AM, KIQQ-FM and KMGG-FM, and finished his career at KRTH-FM, where he retired for health reasons in 1997. He died from lung cancer on May 22, 1998.

As a youth growing up in Galion, Ohio, Morgan's interest was piqued while listening to his favorite DJs on Cleveland's top forty giant KYW which would eventually lead to his first on-air job was at Wooster College in 1955 on WWST & WWST-FM, for an initial salary of $1 per hour.

In 1959 Morgan moved from college radio to KACY Port Hueneme, California where he hosted the over night show called Kegler's Spare Time with Bob Morgan live from the Wagon Wheel Bowl before moving on to a succession of brief stints beginning in 1961 at KTEE Carmel as the second half of a two-man classical music announcer on KTEE with Bob Elliott, a Marine Corps Heavyweight Champion who later went onto radio fame as "K.O. Bailey," then a short time later as the morning drive DJ and mid-day board op for the Arthur Godfrey Show at KMBY, Monterey, then a jump to KOMY Watsonville, then back to KMBY Monterey followed in 1962 at "K-MAKE", KMAK, Fresno where he first worked with program director Ron Jacobs. This was followed in 1963 by an eight-month stay at KROY Sacramento before finally landing his first major-market job in 1964 at KEWB, San Francisco. It was here that he met and worked with his lifelong friend "The Real" Don Steele.

On April 27, 1965 the careers of Morgan, Steele and programer Ron Jacobs would gain superstar status when they joined the staff of KHJ-AM, Los Angeles almost overnight. Programming genius Bill Drake along with a staff of talented DJs called "Boss Jocks" had transformed a sleepy giant into the city's most dominant radio station. It was here that Morgan enjoyed his greatest on-air success as one of the original "Boss Jocks" on 93/KHJ which dominated the Top 40 radio market in Southern California from 1965 to 1973. Morgan's signature, "Good Morgan Boss Angeles!" to his devoted morning drive time audience would stay with him until the end of his career. It was also Morgan that voiced much of the "Boss Radio/93 KHJ station promos and imagery. It was also during this time that Morgan co-produced and narrated the 48-hour History of Rock and Roll in 1969, a definitive on-air encyclopedia of Rock & Roll. It was the first-ever "rock-umentary" aired worldwide as a definitive history of the Rock & Roll genre—a "rockumentary," as producers Drake and Gene Chenault would call it—that would stretch from the early 1950s to 1989.

In 1970 Morgan made a surprise move from Los Angeles to WIND Radio Chicago where he remained in the morning slot until finally being enticed back to his KHJ morning show in 1972.

Until his departure from KHJ in October 1970, Morgan had commanded unparalleled radio ratings in Los Angeles. Morgan's return to his former time slot in L.A., which saw a significant spike upward for KHJ until he departed just a year later.

In 1940...Radio personality/talk show host Don Imus, was born.

Before radio, Imus was a brakeman on the Southern Pacific Railroad in the '60s. Upon winning a talent contest at Johnny Otis's nightclub, he began working as a singer/songwriter, managed by Otis. After hearing a morning disc-jockey, he went to the nearby radio station and persuaded the owner to hire him. Thus he began his career as a radio disc jockey on June 28, 1968 at radio station KUTY in Palmdale, California. He stayed at the station until 1969 when he left for a job at KJOY, a small radio station in Stockton, California. He was later fired for saying "hell" on air.

After being fired in Stockton, he went to KXOA in Sacramento, California. His on-air pranks, such as calling up a restaurant and ordering 1200 hamburgers to go, made his show immensely popular and boosted ratings. He was inspired to pursue a career in radio by listening to California radio personality Don MacKinnon.

After a stint at WGAR 1220 AM radio in Cleveland, Ohio, Imus moved to New York City and WNBC radio in December 1971. During this first stint at WNBC, Imus recorded three record albums, two for the RCA Victor label (1200 Hamburgers to Go, including some of his more popular humor from KXOA, WGAR and WNBC broadcasts, and One Sacred Chicken to Go with Anthrax, a primarily studio-created album centering on his satirical character, The Right Rev. Dr. Billy Sol Hargis.

"Imus...In The Morning...In The Evening" aired nationally in the fall of 1973, part of NBC Radio's attempt to revive "Monitor", it's long-running weekend magazine. The Saturday night segment rotated popular hosts Imus, Wolfman Jack, and Robert W. Morgan.

Imus was fired from WNBC in August 1977 along with several of the station's other personalities, in an effort to revamp the station's sound and boost ratings. In 1978 he returned to Cleveland radio as afternoon drive host on WHK, making the front page of the Cleveland Plain Dealer on his first day back in town.

In a surprise change of fortune Imus was rehired by WNBC in September 1979, and revived his morning drive show. From 1982 to 1985, the station also employed talk-radio host Howard Stern, and WNBC heavily promoted the pair in print and television ads, which often featured the slogan "If We Weren't So Bad, We Wouldn't Be So Good."

During this period, Imus was best known for character Billy Sol Hargis, a radio evangelist whose name was a cross between infamous real-life radio and television preacher Billy James Hargis and real-life Texas fertilizer swindler Billie Sol Estes. As Hargis, Imus touted on-air the merits of the "First Church of the Gooey Death and Discount House of Worship". Imus published the 1981 best-selling novel God's Other Son that further depicted Hargis' adventures. The novel was republished in 1994 by popular demand and spent seven weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.  Other regular Imus characters included the supposed general manager "Geraldo Santana Banana" (played by doo-wop singer Larry Chance), and "Moby Worm", a monstrous creature who devoured local schools (which was reported on the show's "breaking news updates").

Imus was also the utility announcer for Geraldo Rivera's monthly TV series Good Night, America, which aired as a recurring segment of ABC's Wide World of Entertainment program, and he was one of the inaugural video jockeys for the launch of the VH-1 cable network in 1985.

In 1988, WNBC radio was sold to Emmis Broadcasting; on October 7, 1988, WNBC permanently signed off the air and Emmis' WFAN was moved from 1050 AM to WNBC's former spot, 660 AM. Imus in the Morning remained at 660 AM among WFAN's sports programs with his music and comedy bits as the staples of the program and the beginnings of a political forum.

In 1948…"My Favorite Husband," a sitcom starring Lucille Ball and Richard Denning, began its three-year run on CBS Radio. It was the basis for what evolved into the TV sitcom "I Love Lucy."

In 1982...FCC approves AM stereo radio, KTSA San Antonio goes stereo

In 1985…Bandleader Kay Kaiser, a popular radio personality in the 1930s and 1940s, died of heart failure at age 80.
