Pandora Reports 4Q Profit, Increase In Listener Hours

Pandora Wednesday announced a profit of $9 million or a 4 cents a share. Pandora generated approximately $640 million in revenue in 2013, $200 million in Q4. Advertising revenue for the company was up 45% to $521 million for the year and 39% for the quarter to $162 million. Mobile revenue grew 69% in 2013 to $366 million and 60% in Q4 to $117 million.

“Pandora continued growing revenue over 50% year-over-year,” stated Brian McAndrews CEO, President & Chairman of Pandora.

Brian McAndrews
“2013 marked notable growth from user metrics to financial achievements. These have largely been driven by our position as a leader in mobile media, both in user engagement and monetization. We remain intensely focused on advancing Pandora's mission to reinvent radio. To fully capture the substantial market opportunity ahead of us, we will continue to aggressively invest in 2014 in sustained audience and engagement growth as well as activities that further accelerate monetization. As such, our bias will continue to be toward revenue growth and capturing additional market share."

Other Business Metrics

Total Calendar Fourth Quarter Ended December 31, 2013 Listener Hours: Total listener hours grew 16% to 4.54 billion for the calendar fourth quarter of 2013, compared to 3.91 billion for the calendar fourth quarter of 2012.

Total Calendar Year Ended December 31, 2013 Listener Hours: Total listener hours grew 23% to 16.70 billion for the calendar year of 2013, compared to 13.51 billion for the calendar year of 2012.

McAndrews also announced plans to extend an olive branch of sorts to its rivals, telling analysts the company plans to “increase engagement” with people across the radio and music industries.  “We may not always agree with others in the ecosystem, but it’s important that we understand each other’s objectives and work to find common ground where we can,” he said according to InsideRadio.

Disney Remains A Top Performer

Spurred by its surprise movie hit, “Frozen,” an animated movie about two sibling princesses trying to reconnect in an icy land, Walt Disney blew past analysts’ earnings estimates on Wednesday.  Fiscal first-quarter profit soared 33 percent.

The Walt Disney Company reported earnings that once again beat Wall Street estimates, helping to push shares up another 1.5% after-hours. These numbers come as Disney continues to execute extremely well, leveraging its unmatched portfolio of brands to drive increased television revenue, a growing share of the global box office, and strong park attendance. Thanks to fantastic results, shares have rallied more than 32% past in the past twelve months, recently hitting a new all-time high before falling alongside the market in January. While shares have performed extremely well over the past year, Disney remains one of the more compelling long-term investments, according to seekingalpha.com.

Cable Networks

Operating income at Cable Networks increased $325 million to $1.3 billion for the quarter due to growth at ESPN, higher equity income from A&E Television Networks (AETN) and, to a lesser extent, an improvement at the domestic Disney Channels. Higher operating income at ESPN was due to increased affiliate and advertising revenues and the absence of equity losses as a result of the prior-year sale of interest in the ESPN STAR Sports joint venture. The increase in affiliate revenue was driven by contractual rate increases, partially offset by a decrease as a result of the sale of ESPN UK in the fourth quarter of the prior year. Growth in ESPN advertising revenues was due to an increase in rates and units delivered, partially offset by lower ratings. Programming and production costs were comparable to the prior year as an increase due to higher contractual rates for NFL and college football was largely offset by a decrease due to the sale of ESPN UK. Higher equity income from AETN reflected lower programming and marketing costs and higher advertising revenues. Growth at the domestic Disney Channels was primarily due to higher affiliate revenues from contractual rate increases.

Broadcasting

Operating income at Broadcasting decreased $84 million to $178 million for the quarter due to higher programming costs, lower program sales and decreased advertising revenue, partially offset by higher affiliate revenues and lower general and administrative expenses. Higher programming costs were due to higher program write-offs and a contractual rate increase for Modern Family. The decline in program sales reflected higher sales of Revenge and Army Wives in the prior-year quarter. Lower advertising revenue was driven by a decrease at the owned television stations, partially offset by an increase at the ABC Television Network. The increase at the ABC Television Network was due to higher rates and more units delivered, partially offset by lower ratings. Affiliate revenue growth reflected higher contractual rates. Lower general and administrative expenses were driven by lower labor costs primarily as a result of decreased pension and postretirement medical costs.

SeaWorld Books Replacement Acts

Gretchen Wilson
One week after Alan Jackson and Kid Rock kicked off SeaWorld’s 2014 Bands, Brews and BBQ concert series, another country act has been announced to headline week No. 2. Gretchen Wilson will perform on Saturday (Feb. 8), while comedian Bill Engvall will take the stage on Sunday.

Despite protesters from PETA and other animal rights groups, Jackson and Kid Rock both played to capacity crowds in Orlando, Fla. last weekend, according to A Taste Of Country. Nine other performers backed out of the concert series — including Martina McBride, Willie Nelson and Trace Adkins — after CNN aired their controversial ‘Blackfish’ documentary on television.

SeaWorld has worked to keep its performers a secret until days before each concert. Wilson and Engvall are listed as replacements by the Orlando Sentinel, meaning they were added after the mass exodus.

Survey: 58 Percent Looking Forward To Olympics

Tomorrow, the XXII Olympic Winter Games will open in Sochi on Russia’s Black Sea coast. Nearly six-in-ten Americans (58%) say they’re looking forward to the Winter Olympics, making it among the most anticipated 2014 events we asked about.

And while intentions may not always line up with actions, the Olympics finding is in line with the share of Americans who’ve said they’ve closely followed previous Games.

Since the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, the Pew Research Center has covered five summer and three winter games as part of its regular news interest surveys, in which we ask whether people are following various news events and, if so, how closely.

Report: George Zimmerman To Fight Rapper DMX

George Zimmerman
Controversy quickly began swirling yesterday at the news that George Zimmerman, who was acquitted last summer of killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who he said he shot in self-defense, will be facing off against rapper DMX in a "celebrity" boxing match.

Celebrity boxing promoter Damon Feldman, who's organized previous bouts involving Michael Lohan, Danny Bonaduce, Jose Canseco and Rodney King, told TMZ that the 43-year-old DMX had been chosen out of more than 15,000 people who'd wanted to fight the 30-year-old Zimmerman, who'd previously told RadarOnline that the bout his idea.

Zimmerman has said his pay for the event -- the amount of which Feldman wouldn't comment on -- will go to an animal rescue charity, although Feldman said he doesn't know how much money from the bout will be given to charity.

Critics have slammed the event, saying it's immoral for Zimmerman to profit from his fame resulting from Martin's death, but Feldman told TMZ, "I have no comment about that. You know it's all business."

Perhaps DMX might be having second thoughts though, as his publicist said yesterday that the match hasn't been officially confirmed, stating, "DMX will release an official statement if and when an agreement is made."

BBC Radio: Nick Grimshaw Adds 700K Listeners

Nick Grimshaw selfie
Nick Grimshaw's audience numbers are finally moving in the right direction, with the BBC Radio 1 breakfast DJ adding more than 700,000 listeners in the final three months of 2013.

According to The Guardian, Grimshaw has had a tough time since taking over from Chris Moyles as Radio 1 breakfast DJ in September 2012, with his audience at one point down more than a million listeners on his predecessor.

The 29-year-old added 709,000 listeners for a total average weekly audience of 6.3 million during the final quarter of last year, a 12.6% rise over the previous period, according to the latest official Rajar figures published on Thursday.

However, Grimshaw is still below the average weekly audience for his first three months on the Radio 1 breakfast show and 400,000 listeners off Moyles's last quarterly audience figure of 6.7 million. The breakfast show's lowest audience figure was 5.5 million for Sara Cox in 2003.

Radio 1 had an average weekly audience of 10.97 million, a 1.3% quarter-on-quarter rise, in the final three months of 2013.

However, the station is seeking new measures of success as it attempts to reach out to its target audience of 15- to 24-year-olds via social media, rather than the airwaves. Grimshaw has more than 1.5m followers on Twitter and Radio 1 recently topped 1m subscribers to its YouTube channel.

Radio 2, which overtook Radio 1 to become the UK's most popular station more than a decade ago, had another strong quarter with Chris Evans's breakfast show adding almost 500,000 listeners to come within touching distance of 10 million.

Evans's 9.8 million average weekly audience, a 5% quarter-on-quarter rise, was new high for his Radio 2 breakfast show and helped propel the station to a new high of 15.5 million, 3.9% up on the previous quarter.

Norway DXer Reports Helluva Skip For Class C AMer

Ogdensburg radio station WSLB 1400 AM has apparently been heard more than 3,400 miles away in Norway, according to northcountrynow.com.

Torgeir Nyen, who lives in the capital city of Oslo, was on the Norwegian coast in Lista on Jan. 19 at 1 a.m. U.S. East Coast time when “Your station came up from the noise just before the hour and was audible for a couple of minutes,” Nyen wrote. “The announcer says ‘All Sports – All the Time ... Radio 1400 WSLB Ogdensburg...’ followed by what may be two town/area names,” he said in his message to WSLB. He also said he heard it again a little later in the day.

Station manager Michael Guimond calculates that Nyen was “3,425 Miles from Ogdensburg across the North Atlantic” when he heard the signal.

“My city Oslo is now deep in snow, and I guess you get a bit of snow in the winter as well. Maybe winter sports are popular in your area like it is in Norway,” Nyen wrote.

Nyen DXes as a hobby, which is particularly interesting to AM radio listeners since, after sunset, the signals travel much farther than they can during the day. Just how far depends on other conditions. Nyer was also using long directional antennas.

Lady Gaga: "I Was Exhausted Fighting People"

Lady Gaga has proudly unveiled her latest cover, for next month’s issue of Harper’s Bazaar, as she opens up about a turbulent 2013 which saw the superstar part ways with her long term manager Troy Carter amidst a wave of a pretty cruel public backlash.

According to entertainmentwise.com,  the ‘Applause’ hit maker has admitted last year is one she’s looking forward to putting behind her as her album sales plummeted and reviews of her latest record ‘ARTPOP’ were perhaps slightly harsher than Mother Monster has previously been used to

But with a new year comes a new start and being the trooper and global role model that she is, this mega star is not going to let a bit of bad press get her down as she reveals she is going to come back fighting. "I became very depressed at the end of 2013. I was exhausted fighting people off," Gaga told the magazine.

"I couldn't even feel my own heartbeat. I was angry, cynical, and had this deep sadness like an anchor dragging everywhere I go. I just didn't feel like fighting anymore. I didn't feel like standing up for myself one more time -- to one more person who lied to me."

"Depression doesn't take away your talents -- it just makes them harder to find. But I always find it. I learned that my sadness never destroyed what was great about me. You just have to go back to that greatness, find that one little light that's left. I'm lucky I found one little glimmer stored away."

February 6 In Radio History

In 1924…the first worship service heard over radio was aired by the British Broadcasting Corporation in England. The service originated from St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church in London.

In 1925…WMCA signed-on at 880 AM. In 1928 it moved to the 570 kHz frequency, sharing time for the next three years with municipally-owned WNYC.

In 1945, host Barry Gray began dropping music and adding talk with celebrities and later call-in listeners; he is thus sometimes considered "The Father of Talk Radio", and his show lasted on WMCA through several decades and format changes.

WMCA began playing rock music in the late 1950s with a Top 40 format. Among its disc jockey staff were future legends Scott Muni and Murray "the K" Kaufman.

In 1960, WMCA 570 AM began promoting itself by stressing its on-air personalities, who were collectively known as the Good Guys.

Led by program director Ruth Meyer, the first woman to hold the position in New York City radio, this was the era of the high-profile Top 40 disc jockey with an exuberant personality aimed at a certain audience segment. With the advent of the Good Guys format, WMCA became more"on top" of new music and started to become known for "playing the hits."

In the early 1960s, the top 40 format was still young, and the field was crowded in New York City. Two major 50,000-watt stations, WMGM 1050 AM (now WEPN) and WINS 1010 AM, had battled each other for years. Then in 1960, WABC 770 am joined the fray and started featuring top 40 music. Ultimately, it was WMCA's earnest competition with rival WABC that forced WMGM (in early 1962) and then WINS (in spring 1965) to abandon the top-40 format. There was so much attention on the high-profile WMCA-WABC battle that WMGM and WINS were each summarily forced to find a new niche.

In 1929…RCA Victor formed. Radio Corporation of America (RCA) purchased the Victor Talking Machine Company, then the world's largest manufacturer of phonographs (including the famous "Victrola") and phonograph records (in British English, "gramophone records"). The company then became RCA-Victor. With Victor, RCA acquired New World rights to the famous Nipper trademark.

In September 1931, RCA Victor introduced the first 33⅓ rpm records sold to the public, calling them "Program Transcriptions". These used a shallower and more closely spaced implementation of the large "standard groove" found on contemporary 78 rpm records, rather than the "microgroove" used for post-World War II 33⅓ rpm "LP" (Long Play) records. In the depths of the Great Depression, the format was a commercial failure, partly because the new playback equipment they required was expensive. After two or three years the format was abandoned and two-speed turntables were no longer offered in consumer products, but some Program Transcriptions lingered in the company's record catalog throughout the decade.

In 1943…Frank Sinatra first appeared as a vocalist on the radio show, "Your Hit Parade."

In 1974…the "CBS Mystery Theater" premiered on the CBS Radio Network.

In 1998...Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys died of cancer. He was 51

In 2000…Former WMCA Good Guy Joe O’Brien retired

In 2005...Karl Haas, host of the long-running syndicated classical music radio program "Adventures in Good Music," died of multiple organ failure at 91. Haas began his radio program Adventures in Good Music on WJR in Detroit, Michigan in 1959.  Syndicated broadcasts of the show across the United States began in 1970 on WCLV, Cleveland, Ohio. The show was eventually syndicated to commercial and public radio stations around the world and became the world's most widely listened-to classical music radio program.

In 2006….ABC announced plans to sell 24 radio stations to Citadel

Olympics Producer Has First Solo Stint Leading Team

With the Winter Olympics set to begin this Thursday in Sochi, the pressure is on NBCUniversal to turn its telecast of the games into a ratings as well as financial success, WSJ notes.

The network is banking on the promotional potential of the Olympics to help it cement a recent surge in its popularity, following years in the ratings doldrums.

What’s more, NBCUniversal needs to turn a “comfortable” profit, according to NBC Sports Chairman Mark Lazarus–something the network didn’t do at the last Winter Games.

Much of the responsibility falls to Jim Bell, a veteran producer overseeing NBC’s Olympics broadcast. The challenges include how to keep viewers interested when live streaming and social media makes spoilers of the results likely. And with a nine-hour time difference between the East Coast and Sochi, the games won’t air during the prime-time hours that advertisers pay a premium for, the story notes.

Report: Justin Bieber 'Extremely Abusive" Aboard Pot Plane

Justin Bieber and his father were “extremely abusive” to a flight attendant as their private jet flew from Canada to New Jersey on Friday, forcing her to take refuge in the cockpit, according to an official report obtained exclusively by NBC News.

According to multiple law enforcement sources, the leased, luxurious Gulfstream IV on which the 19-year-old Canadian pop star, his father and an entourage of 10 friends traveled was so full of marijuana smoke that the pilots were forced to wear oxygen masks.

“The captain of the flight stated that he warned the passengers, including Bieber, on several occasions to stop smoking marijuana,” says the official report of the incident. “The captain also stated he needed to request that the passengers stop their harassing behavior toward the flight attendant and after several warnings asked the flight attendant to stay with him near the cockpit to avoid any further abuse.”

According to multiple sources, the attendant was forced to spend much of the flight near the pilots as the plane travelled from Canada to Teterboro, N.J.

“The flight attendant stated the passengers, including Bieber and his father, Jeremy Bieber,” stated the report, “were extremely abusive verbally and she would not work another flight with them.”

The pilots, despite a pressurized cabin, were forced to wear their oxygen masks during the flight, according to multiple sources, so that they wouldn’t risk inhaling marijuana and failing any subsequent drug test, which would put their licenses at risk.

According to officials, when the plane landed at Teterboro, NJ it was met by DEA and Customs and Border Patrol agents and police. There was still marijuana smoke inside the cabin, according to the report. When interviewed at Teterboro, Bieber admitted smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol, but stated that he did not have any additional marijuana.
