'CBS This Morning' Hopes Oprah Will Fill-In

Oprah with Gayle King of CBS This Morning
“CBS This Morning” wants Oprah Winfrey to save the day and fill in for Charlie Rose after he was axed due to a shocking sexual-harassment scandal, sources exclusively tell Page Six at The NYPost.

“They are begging Oprah to fill in,” said a TV insider. “Not full time . . . But they are hoping she’ll do one day, two days, one hour, fill in till Christmas. Anything.”

Reports have said a rotating cast of CBS News talent will step in. But the network’s not exactly known for its deep bench of stars compared to rivals NBC and ABC. Suggested Rose replacements on Twitter have so far included Tony Dokoupil and Bianna Golodryga.

Winfrey joined CBS’s “60 Minutes” in September, and she is best friends with “CBS This Morning” co-host Gayle King. An insider said of the strategy to land Winfrey: “Unless you get a superstar [on the show], it’s always going to be, ‘Charlie’s missing.’”

R.I.P.: David Cassidy Dies At 67

David Cassidy, a singer and actor whose androgynous features and jaunty voice made him a 1970s teen heartthrob on the “The Partridge Family” television show, died on Tuesday at age 67, his publicist said.

Reuters reports Cassidy, who was diagnosed with dementia in his 60s, entered a Florida hospital over the weekend and succumbed to organ failure. He died in the hospital’s intensive care unit, his publicist, Jo-Ann Geffen, said in a telephone interview.

Geffen released a statement from his family that said Cassidy died surrounded by loved ones “with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had gripped him for so long.”

With dark hair cascading over his shoulders, hazel eyes and a look that emulated many rock stars of the day, Cassidy was cast at 19 in “The Partridge Family” for his sex appeal to girls, not his singing. When the show’s producers discovered Cassidy’s melodious voice, he became lead singer in the family band.

He played the teenager Keith Partridge whose widowed mother - portrayed by his stepmother, Shirley Jones - formed a touring pop band with her offspring, traveling to gigs in a multi-colored bus.

The sitcom produced a number of hit songs, including “I Think I Love You,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard chart in 1970, the year the show debuted.

The Oscar-winning Jones was his mentor as well as his co-star, and the two remained friends and collaborators long after the show ended in 1974.

The fandom surrounding Cassidy approached the hysteria of Beatlemania a decade earlier and culminated in a stampede at a 1974 show in London. Hundreds were injured, and a 14-year-old girl caught in the crush died days later.

He struggled financially for years and declared bankruptcy in 2015.

Cassidy also confessed to abusing drugs and alcohol and was arrested multiple times for driving under the influence.

He said on the talk show “Dr. Phil” in 2017 that he had to get drunk to visit his mother when she was in the hospital. She died of dementia, as did his grandfather.

CBS Fires Charlie Rose Over Sex Harassment Allegations

Charlie Rose
UPDATE 11/21/17 1:30 PM:

CBS News said on Tuesday it had fired Charlie Rose, one of the most prominent American interviewers, the day after the Washington Post reported the television host had sexually harassed eight women.
Rose was a co-host on the morning show “CBS This Morning” and a correspondent for its long-running Sunday night news magazine “60 Minutes.” The “Charlie Rose” show was broadcast on PBS and Bloomberg TV.

”A short time ago we terminated Charlie Rose’s employment with CBS News, effective immediately,“ CBS News President David Rhodes said in an internal message that was shared with media. ”This followed the revelation yesterday of extremely disturbing and intolerable behavior said to have revolved around his PBS program.

Rose could not immediately be reached to comment on Tuesday.

Earlier Posting...

CBS and other networks on Monday suspended Charlie Rose, one of the most prominent American interviewers, after eight women told the Washington Post he sexually harassed them and prompted Rose to apologize for his “inappropriate behavior,” according to Reuters.

PBS and Bloomberg said in statements they were suspending Rose’s signature interview show, distributed on both outlets, citing the allegations in the newspaper story.

“These allegations are extremely disturbing and we take them very seriously,” CBS News said in a statement. Rose is a co-host on the morning show “CBS This Morning” and a correspondent for its long-running Sunday night news magazine “60 Minutes.”

“I deeply apologize for my inappropriate behavior,” he said in a statement. “I am greatly embarrassed. I have behaved insensitively at times and I accept responsibility for that, though I do not believe that all of these allegations are accurate.”

“I always felt that I was pursuing shared feelings, even though I now realize I was mistaken,” he added.

Eight women, who worked at Charlie Rose Inc or aspired to a job there, have accused Rose of making unwanted sexual advances toward them, the Washington Post reported on Monday, the latest in a wave of sexual harassment allegations against prominent men in the entertainment and media industries and American politics.

Rose routinely landed the biggest names in international politics, entertainment and letters for his interview show “Charlie Rose,” which was broadcast on PBS and Bloomberg TV.

An acute listener, Rose employed an engaging yet serious style in contrast to the bitter partisan arguments, cross-talk and raised voices on cable television. True to the show’s sober tone, the set was simply a table and chairs with an all-black background.

His persona on “CBS This Morning” was a little more whimsical, given the lighter subject matter of morning news shows in the United States.

The eight women, who were employees or aspired to work for Rose at the “Charlie Rose” show from the late 1990s to as recently as 2011, told the newspaper he made unwanted sexual advances toward them, walked in the nude around them and groped their breasts, buttocks and genital areas.

The Post said it had multiple interviews with the eight women, who ranged in age from 21 to 37 at the time of the alleged encounters and their stories had “striking commonalities.”

Two hours after the Post story went online, one of its authors, Amy Brittain, tweeted:

Rose owned his interview show, even though PBS distributed it, and that raised questions of what recourse women who had complaints about his behavior could do. The Post quoted Yvette Vega, his longtime executive producer, as saying she failed and deeply regretted not helping women who complained about his behavior.

But it apparently was a poorly-kept secret in the industry. Two former employees interviewed by the Post said young women hired by the show were known as “Charlie’s Angels.” A Post contributing writer who worked on the story said she was reporting on some of the allegations while working at another news organization in 2010 but could not confirm them.

FCC Plans to Roll Back Internet Rules

Ajit Pai
The FCC unveiled a plan Tuesday that would give Internet providers broad powers to determine what websites and online services their customers can see and use.

According To The Washington Post, the move sets the stage for a crucial vote next month that could reshape the entire digital ecosystem. The agency’s Republican chairman, Ajit Pai, has made undoing the government's net neutrality rules one of his top priorities, and Tuesday's move hands a win to broadband companies such as AT&T, Verizon and Comcast.

Pai is taking aim at regulations that were approved just two years ago under a Democratic presidency and that sought to make sure all Internet content, whether from big or small companies, would be treated equally by Internet providers.

The decision will be put to a vote at the agency's Dec. 14 meeting in Washington. It is expected to pass, with the GOP controlling three of the commission's five seats.

In a release, Pai said his proposal would prevent the government from "micromanaging the Internet." In place of the existing rules, he added, the FCC would "simply require Internet service providers to be transparent about their practices."

“The FCC will no longer be in the business of micromanaging business models and preemptively prohibiting services and applications and products that could be pro-competitive,” Pai said in an interview, adding that the Obama administration had sought to pick winners and losers and exercised “heavy-handed” regulation of the internet.

The Wall Street Journal reports oversight responsibility for internet providers would again include the Federal Trade Commission as well as the FCC, Mr. Pai said in his statement. The Obama-era rules effectively exempted internet providers from FTC regulation.

“As a result of my proposal, the Federal Trade Commission will once again be able to police [internet providers], protect consumers and promote competition, just as it did before 2015,” Mr. Pai wrote. “Notably, my proposal will put the federal government’s most experienced privacy cop, the FTC, back on the beat to protect consumers’ online privacy.”

The FCC would retain a version of its transparency rule, requiring providers to disclose their net-neutrality practices to consumers.

Many conservatives view the FTC’s case-by-case regulatory approach as more appropriate for the internet economy, to encourage more innovation.

Progressives prefer the FCC’s rule-based approach for the online environment to prevent unfair and anticompetitive practices by internet providers from ever taking root.

National News Viewing: Up On Cable, Down On Broadcast TV

National TV news viewing remains strong year-to-date -- even more than last year, despite election-year results.

Pivotal Research Groups says all network TV news viewing through November 12 -- on broadcast and cable -- is up 6% versus the same time period a year ago.

According to MediaPost, viewing among the three big cable networks -- MSNBC, CNN and Fox News Channel -- is 15% higher than a year ago, with the broadcast networks down 8%.

“During a year where most TV viewing is declining significantly, the genre represents a key area of growth for the industry,” writes Brian Wieser, senior media analyst for Pivotal.

Pivotal estimates national TV news programming in 2016 amounted to 44 billion person-hours of Nielsen live-plus-same day viewing across all dayparts and all viewers -- 12% of total national TV viewing hours and 374 billion person-hours, when looking at live-plus-seven days of time-shifted viewing.

Philly Radio: Entercom, NFL Eagles Extend Radio Deal

Mike Quick, Merrill Reese
The NFL Philadelphia Eagles and Entercom Communications, the new owner of WIP 94.1 FM, have agreed to a seven-year deal that will extend the broadcast rights for Eagles games through the 2024 season. Financial terms were not revealed.

“It is with the great pleasure and pride that I announce, with [Eagles president Don Smolenski] by my side, that WIP will be the home of the Philadelphia Eagles for another seven years,” Entercom CEO David Field announced on the WIP Morning Show on Tuesday.

According to philly.com, the agreement means fan favorites Merrill Reese and Mike Quick will continue to call the Birds’ preseason, regular-season and postseason games for WIP and 11 other stations that carry the Eagles Radio Network. Longtime WIP host Howard Eskin will also continue his role as Eagles sideline reporter.

Eagles games have aired on WIP and various CBS Radio stations since 1992. The 74-year-old Reese has been the voice of the Eagles since 1977, and is the longest-tenured play-by-play announcer in the NFL.

Back in September, 97.5 The Fanatic announced a new multi-year deal to broadcast all 76ers games, bringing back play-by-play announcer Tom McGinnis for his 23rd season. The Fanatic also owns the broadcast rights to Flyers games, and WIP signed a new deal with the Phillies before last season.

Entercom closed on its merger with CBS Radio Inc. last week, making the Bala Cynwyd-based company the nation’s No. 2 radio operator with 244 radio stations in 47 markets. Entercom has said it will cut about $100 million in costs, but CEO David Field said “we will not take one cent away from the quality of the listener experience or the value we provide to advertisers.”

In addition to WIP, Entercom owns NewsRadio KYW 1060, WTDY Today’s 96.5 FM,  Country WXTU 92.5, N/TWPHT 1210 AM and Classic Hits WOGL 98.1 FM in Philadelphia.

DOJ Sues To Stop AT&T, Time-Warner Merger

The Justice Department sued on Monday to block AT&T's merger with Time Warner, calling it an "illegal" combination that harms consumers and stifles innovation, DOJ officials said.

AT&T and Time Warner announced their $85 billion merger last year, but the closing has been dragged out by the government's antitrust review.

CNBC reports it is the latest salvo in a drama more than one year in the making. Earlier this month, reports circulated that the government had demanded AT&T sell Turner Broadcasting, operator of the CNN news network, or DirectTV as a condition of approval, though the government pushed back at those reports.

A Justice Department official told reporters on Monday that the merger would raise prices for consumers and potentially block creators of media content from distributing their product without paying more money. Time Warner owns various networks in addition to CNN, including TBS, TNT and Cartoon Network. It also has lucrative sports broadcasting deals.

The government was also working to get state attorneys general to support a lawsuit, but so far none has signed on, the Justice official said on Monday.

Faber on DOJ blocking AT&T/Time Warner merger: DOJ officials are confident they will prevail in court from CNBC.

In a statement on Monday, AT&T's general counsel, David McAtee, said, "Today's DOJ lawsuit is a radical and inexplicable departure from decades of antitrust precedent. Vertical mergers like this one are routinely approved because they benefit consumers without removing any competitor from the market. We see no legitimate reason for our merger to be treated differently."

The lawsuit says the merged company would have the power to make its video distributor rivals less competitive by raising their costs, which would be passed on to consumers. The merged firm could also hinder the growth of online distributors that it sees as a threat to the pay-TV model.

The Justice Department has disputed it made the sale of Turner Broadcasting or CNN a condition of approval. A Justice Department official said Monday that the government made a "good faith" effort to resolve the harm to competition while allowing significant parts of the deal to move forward.

Stephenson said during the press conference that a sale of CNN was a "nonstarter," adding that the company was confident it would not have to sell any assets.

Dems Want Sinclair Broadcasting To Sell Stations

Top House Democrats want the Federal Communications Commission to force Sinclair Broadcasting Group to sell off some television stations if the agency approves its proposed merger with Tribune Media, according to The Hill.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Energy and Commerce ranking member Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) and Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.), the top Dem on a communications and technology subcommittee wrote to the agency's commissioners on Monday to voice their concerns about the merger.

Currently Sinclair is already the nation's largest owner of television stations in the country. The $4 billion deal with Tribune media would give the combined company access to 72 percent of the American television audience.

The Democrats pointed out that currently, no single broadcaster is allowed to have a reach over 39 percent of the U.S. population. Those media ownership rules were created to create a diversity of viewpoints among local media stations across the country.

But Republican FCC Chairman Ajit Pai moved in April to reinstate an exemption called the “UHF discount.” Created in 1985, it allows broadcasters to count only half of their broadcast reach towards the 39 percent cap. It was created to address gaps between VHF and much lower quality UHF signals, which no longer exist now that signals are all broadcast across digital frequencies.

Even with the discount though, Sinclair’s holdings would still surpass the cap, hitting 45 percent of U.S. audiences.

21st Century Fox In $90M Settlement

Twenty-First Century Fox Inc has reached a $90 million settlement of shareholder claims arising from the sexual harassment scandal at its Fox News Channel, which cost the jobs of longtime news chief Roger Ailes and anchor Bill O‘Reilly.

According to Reuters, the settlement requires a judge’s approval and resolves what are known as “derivative” claims against Fox officers and directors, including: Rupert Murdoch and his son Lachlan, who are Fox’s executive chairmen; James Murdoch, another son and its chief executive, and Ailes’ estate.

The defendants did not admit wrongdoing in agreeing to the settlement filed with the Delaware Chancery Court.

Gretchen Carlson
Monday’s settlement calls for insurers of Fox officers, Fox directors and Ailes’ estate to pay the $90 million to the New York-based company for the benefit of shareholders.

Fox will enhance governance and said it created the Fox News Workplace Professionalism and Inclusion Council to ensure a proper workplace environment, bolster training and further the recruitment and advancement of women and minorities.

In a typical derivative case, shareholders sue in the name of a company to remedy wrongs inflicted by an alleged lack of oversight by a company’s officers and directors.

Shareholders were led by the City of Monroe Employees’ Retirement System in Michigan. Their lawyer, Max Berger, said in a statement the accord would provide “meaningful benefits” for shareholders and Fox News employees.

The scandal at Fox began in July 2016 when former anchor Gretchen Carlson filed a lawsuit accusing Ailes of harassment. O‘Reilly lost his job in April after being accused of harassment, and has denied wrongdoing.

Ailes died the next month. Fox faces other private civil litigation tied to the scandal.

Plattsburgh NY: Radio Park Going On Auction Block

After years of decline and financial losses, Radio Park, home of local radio stations WNBZ 1240 AM, WNBZ Y106.3 FM and Rock WLPW 105.5 FM, goes on the auction block in two weeks. The Saranac Lake radio company, first on the air in 1927, marked its 90th year in September but is barely broadcasting.

Of the five frequencies associated with Saranac Lake Radio, only 106.3 continues to broadcast an automated playlist. The other four have gone silent, according to Adirondack Daily Enterprise.

Two properties associated with WNBZ will be sold at tax auction Nov. 29 at the Best Western Hotel in Ticonderoga. Officials said that WNBZ owner Edward “Ted” Morgan hasn’t paid taxes on the properties since 2014. The properties will be sold to the highest bidder.

This is the second time Radio Park has gone up for tax auction. In 2014, Morgan was the highest bidder at the auction. He paid his tax bill and saved the properties. The last day he could have paid and retained ownership this time was Nov. 15.

Morgan moved WNBZ’s offices to Plattsburgh in fall 2016. Its website has been down for months, its Twitter feed went silent in January, and its “Talk of the Town” Facebook page hasn’t been updated since fall 2016.

Morgan did not respond to emails or phone calls. The number for Radio Park is no longer in service.

“The last I heard, he was in the Bahamas or something,” said former radio station engineer Chris Brescia. “I think he’s trying to hide because he owes so many people money.”

The list of creditors includes Lake Placid Electric, the Federal Communications Commission and the owners of towers on Mount Pisgah and Lyon Mountain who rented space for Morgan’s transmitters
