Cumulus Media announces that its Shreveport, LA, radio stations stepped up to implement a massive water and food giveaway for area residents impacted by severe storms early Friday morning, June 16th. The storms left most of the Shreveport-Bossier City area without electricity, resulting in limited availability of food due to spoilage and extreme heat conditions. By Monday, June 19th, over 100,000 people were still without power from the storm, which was described as having hurricane-level impacts, including heavy winds that snapped trees and downed power lines.
Within 48 hours of the storms’ impact, Cumulus Shreveport and its five stations, KMJJ The Big Station 99.7, KVMA Magic 102.9, KRMD 101.1 Legendary Country, KQHN 97.3 Today’s Best Music Mix, and Lite Rock 100.7, came to the aid of their neighbors across the area, distributing over 1,000 cases of water and over $4,500 worth of food gift certificates to residents in need. Partnering with Music Mountain Water and area restaurants including Raising Cane’s, Southern Classic Chicken, Las Compas Mexican Restaurant, Jason’s Deli, and Posados, along with Louisiana Boardwalk Outlets, the effort helped more than 1,000 families in Shreveport-Bossier City.
➦In 1899...Early radio actor Santos Ortega was born in New York City. In the early 30’s he served as foil for Frank Crumit and Julia Sanderson, ‘The Singing Sweethearts of the Air,’ and starred in Bulldog Drummond (1942-43), The Adventures of Nero Wolfe (1943–1944) and The Adventures of Charlie Chan (1947-48).
Perhaps his most notable radio role was Commissioner Weston on The Shadow. Ortega was heard in the daytime radio serials Valiant Lady and Perry Mason, and lent his remarkable range of voice characterizations to other radio dramas such as Inner Sanctum, The Mysterious Traveler, Suspense, Casey Crime Photographer, The Eternal Light, The Columbia Workshop, The Big Story, You Are There, and X Minus One. For 20 years he played Grandpa on CBS-TV’s As the World Turns.
He died April 10 1976 at age 76.
➦In 1913...Harry Wismer born (Died – December 4, 1967). He was a sportscaster and the charter owner of the New York Titans franchise in the American Football League (AFL).
Wismer played college football at both the University of Florida and Michigan State College, his playing career ending at the latter school when he damaged a knee severely during a game against the University of Michigan. He then began broadcasting Michigan State sports on MSC's radio station WKAR. In 1934, he was hired as the public-address announcer for the Detroit Lions. The Lions were in their first season in Detroit and were owned by George A. "Dick" Richards, who also owned Detroit radio station WJR. Wismer soon began doing a ten-minute daily radio show covering the Lions in addition to his PA duties, while continuing as a student at Michigan State.
After the 1936 season, Wismer was encouraged by Richards to abandon his studies and come to work for WJR on a full-time basis as the station's sports director. Among Wismer's WJR duties was serving as play-by-play announcer for the station's Lions broadcasts. He stayed until 1941 when he was hired by the NBC Blue Network, the predecessor to ABC. During the 1940s Wismer was named Sportscaster of the Year three years running by Sporting News magazine.
Wismer achieved the height of his fame as the voice of the Washington Redskins. His first game for the Redskins was a most inauspicious one in December 1940, their 73–0 loss to the Chicago Bears' great "Monsters of the Midway" team in the 1940 championship game. At one point Wismer was a 25% owner of the club as well, with the majority of the stock being retained by founding owner George Preston Marshall. However, the relationship between the two had greatly degenerated by the mid-1950s over several issues, not the least of which was Marshall's steadfast refusal to sign any black players. The relationship dissolved in claims, counterclaims, and litigation, and Marshall then set out to destroy Wismer's future as a broadcaster, with some success. Wismer was also involved for a time in the broadcasting of Notre Dame football.
He died Dec 3 1967 of a cracked skull suffered in a drunken fall the day previous, at age 54.
➦In 1921…RCA, the Radio Corporation of America, was formed. RCA was the dominant electronics and communications firm in the United States for over five decades. RCA was at the forefront of the mushrooming radio industry in the early 1920s, as a major manufacturer of radio receivers, and the exclusive manufacturer of the first superheterodyne models. RCA also created the first American radio network, the National Broadcasting Company (NBC).
The company was also a pioneer in the introduction and development of television, both black-and-white and especially, color. During this period, RCA was closely identified with the leadership of David Sarnoff. He was general manager at the company's founding, became president in 1930, and remained active, as chairman of the board, until the end of 1969.
By 1926 the market for commercial radio had expanded, and RCA purchased the WEAF and WCAP radio stations and networks from AT&T, merged them with its WJZ (the predecessor of WABC) New York to WRC (presently WTEM) Washington chain, and formed the National Broadcasting Company (NBC). GE used RCA as its retail arm for radio sales from 1919, when GE began production, until 1930. Westinghouse also marketed home radios through RCA until 1930.

Corus Entertainment Inc. reported a loss in its latest quarter compared with a profit a year ago as it took a non-cash impairment charge related to goodwill, broadcast licenses as well as trademark and brand assets totaling $590.0 million.
The television and radio broadcaster says its loss attributable to shareholders amounted to $495.1 million or $2.48 loss per diluted share for the quarter ended May 31.
The loss compared with a profit of $29.6 million or 14 cents per diluted share in the same quarter last year.
Revenue totaled $397.3 million for what was the company's third quarter, down from $433.5 million a year earlier.
On an adjusted basis, Corus says it earned nine cents per share for the quarter, down from an adjusted profit of 15 cents per share in the same quarter last year.
Analysts on average had expected an adjusted profit of five cents per share, based on estimates compiled by financial markets data firm Refinitiv.

Don Bombard, a well-known New York City radio personality best known by his on-air name “Bob Shannon,” died on Wednesday following a lengthy illness.
Bombard, who was 74, worked for several years as the afternoon drive host at WCBS 101.1 FM in the New York market, a job he first took in the mid-1980s and held on to until 2012, taking a hiatus just once — between 2005 and 2007 — when the station briefly flipped its format to ill-fated “Jack FM.”
The Desk reports Bombard’s passing was first announced by his wife, Connie Frances, in a social media post.
“Please remember all the positive things he brought to all,” Frances said, ending the note with a request for privacy.
Bombard started his radio career in Syracuse at WNDR 1260 AM, where he was promoted to the position of program director for the station. He moved to Pittsburgh and WKTQ 1320 AM after accepting an on-air role there.
His time at WCBS-FM came to an end following a medical diagnosis that was not disclosed to the public. The decision to leave the station was mutual, and allowed Bombard to focus on recovering.
It was the end of an era for D-FW sports radio when Norm Hitzges, longtime host at Sportsradio KTCK 96.7 FM/1310 AM The Ticket, announced his retirement on June 15. He signed off on June 23. Luckily for fans of Hitzges’ work, he won’t be gone for long.
The Dallas Morning News reports Hitzges announced Wednesday evening that his new podcast, “Just Wondering...” would debut on Sept. 4. He will chat about sports, lifestyle, travel adventures with his wife, Mary, philosophy and stories. It will air five days a week.

“I don’t know how to say goodbye to you,” Hitzges told listeners over the airwaves in June. “I’ve thought about this for weeks now, and I don’t know how to say goodbye to you. Today, I am announcing my retirement. ... I want to assure you this is not health-related. So many of you have helped carry me through the last three years or so in which there were some serious health minutes, but it’s not health-related.”
Hitzges, 78, announced in 2020 that he had begun treatment for bladder cancer.
Hitzges hosted the “Norm and D Invasion” with Lewis since 2015, and his run at The Ticket has lasted more than 20 years. After working evenings and pioneering morning sports talk, he landed in The Ticket’s 10 a.m. to noon time slot in January 2000, replacing Chris Arnold.
Tucker Carlson is reportedly fundraising for the venture with a “vast majority” of his former Fox News staff set to join him, reports The Daily Caller.
“It’s increasingly possible that the Twitter show is a top-of-funnel play for other things Tucker may soon have cooking,” Puck News’ Dylan Byers wrote. “In fact, I am told he is raising capital to launch a new company that may yet prove more influential.”
“Tucker’s new media play might – if executed adroitly – serve as a paradigm for a generation of TV news personalities with huge followings and fandoms who remain marooned to their desks amid shrinking audiences,” he continued.
Fox News fired the remaining staffers from Carlson’s show on Monday, announcing a new primetime lineup. The network let go of at least nine staffers, including long-standing producers, in a move described as “shockingly callous” by one former Fox News producer who spoke to the Daily Caller. Another former Fox producer told the Caller that staffers on Carlson’s team were repeatedly told following his departure that their jobs were safe, including as recently as last week when two of Carlson’s producers left the network.
Fox announced in late April it was parting ways with Carlson. The top-rated host has since started his own show on Twitter, prompting a public legal battle between Fox News and the Daily Caller co-founder.
The U.S. Coast Guard says it has likely recovered human remains from the wreckage of the Titan submersible and is bringing the evidence back to the United States. The submersible imploded last week, killing all five people on board. The vessel was on a voyage see the wreck of the Titanic. The return of the Titan debris to port in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador on Wednesday is a key piece of the investigation into why the submersible imploded. Twisted chunks of the 22-foot submersible were unloaded at a Canadian Coast Guard pier. The U.S. Coast Guard said late Wednesday it had recovered debris and evidence from the sea floor and that included what it described as presumed human remains.

The US Coast Guard announced on Wednesday that 'presumed' human remains have been found in the wreckage of the Titan submersible. It comes after several identifiable parts of the doomed submersible were lifted ashore earlier in the afternoon, including the sub's nose and a large panel which appears to be from its tail end. The Titan was destroyed earlier this month when it suffered a 'catastrophic implosion' during a journey to the wreckage of the Titanic, killing all five people on board. A debris field was found on the seafloor, 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic, which sits more than two miles (nearly four kilometers) below the Atlantic Ocean's surface and 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. US medical officials will conduct formal analysis of the remains, and have not yet formally identified them.

➤RUSSIAN GENERALS MIA? Russia's most senior generals have dropped out of public view following a failed mercenary mutiny aimed at toppling the top brass, amid a drive by President Vladimir Putin to reassert his authority and unconfirmed reports of at least one arrest. Valery Gerasimov, Russia's top general, has not appeared in public or on state TV since the aborted mutiny on Saturday when mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin demanded Gerasimov be handed over. He has not been mentioned in a defense ministry press release since June 9 either. Gerasimov, 67, is the commander of Russia's war in Ukraine, and the holder of one of Russia's three "nuclear briefcases," according to some Western military analysts.
Absent from view too is General Sergei Surovikin, nicknamed "General Armageddon" by the Russian press for his aggressive tactics in the Syrian conflict, who is deputy commander of Russian forces in Ukraine. A New York Times report, based on a U.S. intelligence briefing, said on Tuesday he had advance knowledge of the mutiny and that Russian authorities were checking if he was complicit.
➤WAGNER PLANNED TO CAPTURE BRASS: Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin planned to capture Russian military leaders as part of last weekend’s insurrection. He fast-tracked his plans after the domestic intelligence agency found out about it, Western officials said. The plot’s premature launch was among the factors that could explain its failure; Prigozhin called off an armed march on Moscow that had initially faced little resistance. He bet that part of Russia’s armed forces would join the rebellion and turn against their commanders, according to Western intelligence. Meanwhile, Russia, which for years denied any association with Wagner, appears to be trying to take over the mercenary network.

Audacy Richmond has signed Newsradio WRVA-AM afternoon host Jeff Katz to a contract extension. Katz has been a WRVA host in PM drive for 10 years. Previously, Katz worked in mornings for conservative Talk WXKS-AM in Boston. Before that, he was with crosstown WRKO-AM in the late 90's and has held talk radio stints in Philadelphia, San Francisco and Las Vegas.
"Jeff is a great citizen of Virginia and continues to be an important part of the WRVA family," said Audacy Virginia Senior Vice President and Market Manager Bennett Zier.

Warner Brothers Discovery is reportedly bringing live content from CNN to its rebranded streaming service, Max, in the coming year. It appears to be a move toward more news-related content, sources close to the matter told Bloomberg.
If the company moves ahead to add CNN’s live broadcasts to Max, it may have to navigate the legality of moving content away from TV stations. Cable and satellite companies typically require an outlet to provide first access to all live broadcasts. Sources told Bloomberg that CNN is already moving forward with distributing live content outside the U.S., but executives are looking into different ways to offer it on Max within the U.S.
Gizmodo could not independently verify this information and Warner Bros. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The alleged addition comes less than a year after the company tried to roll out CNN+, a stand-alone streaming service containing no live content. The project launched by CNN’s former President Jeff Zucker in March of last year brought news segments featuring anchors like former Fox News anchor Chris Wallace, NPR’s Audie Cornish, news anchor Jake Tapper, and others, in what became an unsuccessful attempt to branch into the streaming medium.

➦In 1901...Ed Gardner born (Died of liver failure at age 61– August 17, 1963). He was a comic actor, writer and director, best remembered as the creator and star of the radio's popular Duffy's Tavern comedy series, which he created in 1941.
He found fame on radio with Duffy's Tavern, portraying the wisecracking, malaprop-prone barkeeper Archie. The successful radio program aired on CBS from 1941 to 1942, on the NBC Blue Network from 1942 to 1944, and on NBC from 1944 to 1951. Speaking in a nasal Brooklyn accent, and sounding like just about every working class New Yorker his creator had ever known, Gardner as Archie invariably began each week's show by answering the telephone and saying, "Duffy's Tavern, where the elite meet to eat, Archie the manager speaking, Duffy ain't here—oh, hello, Duffy."
Duffy the owner never appeared, but Archie did, with Gardner assuming the role himself after he could not find the right actor to play the role. Regulars in the tavern included Duffy's airheaded, man-crazy daughter, droll waiter Eddie, barfly Finnegan and Clancy the cop. The daughter was played by several actresses but began with Shirley Booth, Gardner's first wife, with whom he remained friends even after their 1942 divorce.
Gardner also brought radio directing experience to Duffy's Tavern. He had previously originated the Rudy Vallee-John Barrymore radio show and directed shows for George Burns and Gracie Allen, Bing Crosby, Ripley's Believe It or Not, Al Jolson and Fanny Brice. In addition, Gardner was one of the show's writers and its script editor in all but name, though he had a staff that included Abe Burrows, Sol Saks, Parke Levy, Larry Rhine and Dick Martin. He was notorious for hiring as a writer anyone who sounded funny to him in passing, but Gardner ultimately had the final say on each show's script. In 1949, hoping to be able to take advantage of Puerto Rico's income-tax-free status for future media ventures, Gardner moved his radio show there.
➦In 1932...The radio program 'Vic and Sade' made its debut on NBC Blue Network. It was created and written by Paul Rhymer. It was regularly broadcast on radio from 1932 to 1944, then intermittently until 1946, and was briefly adapted to television in 1949 and again in 1957.
It was the the second daytime dramatic serial on network radio. Radio’s first daytime drama was Clara Lu and Em, which premiered on NBC in 1931.
During its 14-year run on radio, Vic and Sade became one of the most popular series of its kind, earning critical and popular success: according to Time, Vic and Sade had 7,000,000 devoted listeners in 1943. For the majority of its span on the air, Vic and Sade was heard in 15-minute episodes without a continuing storyline. The central characters, known as "radio's home folks", were accountant Victor Rodney Gook (Art Van Harvey), his wife Sade (Bernardine Flynn) and their adopted son Rush (Bill Idelson). ➦In 1947..."Strike It Rich" made its debut on CBS Radio. It was a game show that aired radio and television from June 29, 1947, to December 27, 1957 on CBS and NBC.
People in need of money (such as for medical treatment or a destitute family) appeared and told their tale of woe, then tried to win money by answering four relatively easy questions. Each player would be given $30 and bet any of their bankroll on answering each question after being given the category. If the contestant didn't win any money, the emcee opened the "Heart Line", which was a phone line to viewers who wished to donate to the contestant's family.
The radio series aired on CBS from 1947 to 1950. On May 1, 1950, the show moved to NBC until December 27, 1957. Todd Russell was the host from 1947 to 1948, followed by Warren Hull. The television series premiered May 7, 1951, on CBS's daytime lineup and ran until January 3, 1958, including a prime time version from July 4, 1951, to January 12, 1955.
Some applauded Strike It Rich for helping out some less fortunate people, as well as showcasing the sincere charity and goodwill of viewers who donated through the Heart Line. Others found it a sickening spectacle that exploited the less fortunate.
➦In 1951...Bill Stern aired his last 15-minute program of sports features for NBC radio. Stern had been with NBC for 14 years. He later moved to ABC and Mutual to finish out a colorful sportscasting career.
