Univision Reports 'Complete Turnaround'

Spanish-language media giant Univision Communications, which late last year sold a majority stake to an investor group led by former Viacom CFO Wade Davis and recently agreed to a merger with Mexican TV giant Televisa, reported a big second-quarter advertising revenue improvement.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the company said Thursday that its quarterly profit amounted to $36.6 million, compared with a year-ago loss of $27.3 million. Adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortization (OIBDA), another profitability metric, in the second quarter rose from $242.8 million to $268.8 million. Revenue rose 32 percent to $700.2 million.

“The company has completely turned round,” Davis told analysts during an afternoon call, which includes launching a streaming service and Spanish-language content primetime ratings growth. Univision also posted advertising sales growth during its latest financial quarter.

Quarterly ad revenue jumped 72 percent from the coronavirus pandemic-hit year-ago period to $407.2 million and “surpassed the second quarter of 2019,” when it had recorded $405.1 million, the company said.

Wade Davis
Core ad revenue, which is adjusted for political and advocacy ads, rose 70 percent. Media networks unit ad revenue increased 66 percent, or 63 percent when looking at core results. “The increase in media networks core advertising revenue was due to higher ad revenue driven by new brand activations, strong scatter volume and pricing, growth in previously low volume accounts, two major soccer tournaments, and improvements in the auto, retail and beverage sectors, which are recovering from the negative impacts of COVID-19,” the company said.

Revenue for Univision's Radio segment for the second quarter 2021 increased 109% to $59.9 million, compared to $28.6 million for the same prior period. Advertising revenue for the Radio segment for the second quarter 2021 increased 121% to $58.0 million, compared to $26.3 million the same prior period due to the return of advertisers that did not advertise in the second quarter of 2020 due to COVID-19, the return of live events, advocacy revenue and improvements in the auto, services and restaurant categories. Political and advocacy revenue was $7.7 million compared to $4.4 million in the prior period due to COVID-19 advocacy and off cycle local political campaigns.

Televisa and Univision are set to combine into a new company to be called Televisa-Univision, the two announced in mid-April, with Univision set to pay about $4.8 billion for Televisa’s content assets. Davis will hold the same title at the combined company, with Televisa co-CEO Alfonso de Angoitia serving as executive chairman of the board. Televisa will be the largest minority shareholder with a 45 percent stake.

The deal would create the largest Spanish-language media company in the world with bases in the two biggest Spanish-speaking markets: Mexico and the United States. Televisa is a production powerhouse, making some 86,000 hours of content in 2020. Both companies also hold big sports rights packages.

The deal is expected to close later this year, pending regulatory approval in both the U.S. and Mexico and Televisa shareholder approval. The boards of the two companies have already signed off on the transaction.

Wake-Up Call: Vaxx Booster Gets Okay

The Food and Drug administration last night approved a booster shot of the Pfizer or Moderna coronavirus vaccines for immunocompromised people, including transplant recipients and cancer patients, a group that includes several million Americans. Vaccines have a harder time working as well in people with weakened immune systems, and the advisory is coming as the coronavirus is surging in the U.S. again, driven by the delta variant. Those eligible can get a third shot at least 28 days after getting their second dose. The FDA didn't mention immunocompromised patients who got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

San Francisco, New Orleans to Require Vaccines for Indoor Activities: Following the lead of New York City, San Francisco and New Orleans officials said yesterday that people will have to show proof of vaccination or a recent negative Covid tests to get into bars, restaurants, music and entertainment venues, or other indoor sites.

➤3,000 U.S. TROOPS GOING TO AFGHANISTAN FOR PARTIAL EMBASSY EVACUATION: Some 3,000 U.S. troops are being sent to the Kabul airport in Afghanistan to help with a partial evacuation of the U.S. embassy, a move that comes as the Taliban is quickly taking over more and more of the country as the U.S. moves towards a full withdrawal from the country by the end of the month. The news came yesterday as the Taliban took over Kandahar, Afghanistan's second-largest city, and now has effective control of about two-thirds of the country. The State Department said the embassy will continue functioning, with spokesman Ned Price saying, "This is not abandonment. This is not an evacuation. This is not a wholesale withdrawal. What this is is a reduction in the size of our civilian footprint."

President Biden has not backed away from his decision to end the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan despite the Taliban's unexpectedly swift advances, with the administration's position being that after 20 years, it's now up to the Afghans to defend their country.

➤HOMELAND SECURITY SECRETARY MAYORKAS SAYS 'SERIOUS CHALLENGE' AT BORDER: Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said yesterday that there is a, quote, "serious challenge" at the border with Mexico, saying during a Texas news conference that there's what he called an "unprecedented" number of people crossing illegally. There were more than 212,000 people apprehended in July, the highest monthly number in two decades. Mayorkas said 27 percent of them had previously tried to cross. The administration has taken a series of actions to crack down, including increasing resources and personnel to the Rio Grande Valley, sending Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to help Border Patrol, resuming fast-track deportations for migrant families, and flying people to other border sectors for processing. Mayorkas also went to Mexico earlier this week with other U.S. officials to meet with Mexican authorities and coordinate or decreasing the flow of migrants at the border.

➤SUPREME COURT'S BARRETT REJECTS CHALLENGE TO INDIANA UNIVERSITY'S VACCINE MANDATE: Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett yesterday refused to block Indiana University's requirement that students be vaccinated against Covid-19, the first legal test of Covid mandates to come before the high court. There were no noted dissents from other justices to the decision by Barrett, who is in charge of that region. Eight students challenging the mandate had asked for an emergency order blocking it. A federal judge had upheld the mandate last month, as did a federal appeals court. Similar lawsuits brought by students against other schools are pending in federal courts.

➤WENDY'S TO OPEN 700 DELIVERY-ONLY KITCHENS:  Wendy’s is making a bet that people don't just want their fast food fast, they want it delivered to them too, with plans to open 700 delivery-only kitchens by 2025, mostly in big cities in the U.S., Canada and the U.K.. Third parties like DoorDash, UberEats and Grubhub will make the deliveries, and Wendy is partnering with Miami-based Reef Technology, which runs 5,000 delivery kitchens in 30 cities around the world, which will building kitchens and hire workers for them. Wendy's will get royalties of some six percent of sales. Demand for restaurant delivery, already on the rise before the pandemic, understandably surged during it. It remains to be seen how much of that will continue, but Wendy's said its digital sales, which include delivery and orders for pickup, made up 7.5 percent of total sales in the second quarter of this year, up from 2.5 percent in 2019.

➤METABOLISM DOESN'T DECLINE UNTIL AGE 60: New research shows that there isn’t much difference between a teenager’s metabolism and an adult’s. The metabolism reaches adult levels by age 20 and doesn’t start to decline until age 60 – meaning you may not be able to blame your middle-aged weight gain on your metabolism. Prof John Speakman, co-author of the research, of the University of Aberdeen said, ““Previously there was a suggestion that metabolism might slow in your 30s and that was then thought to [cause] susceptibility to middle age spread. We found no evidence to support that. So if you are piling the weight [on] and your waistline is expanding during your 30s and 40s, it’s probably because you are eating more food, then expending less energy.”

➤GEN Z IS LEARNING ABOUT CLASSICAL MUSIC FROM TIKTOK: Boomers and Gen X may have learned about classical music from Bugs Bunny cartoons but Gen Z and millennials are getting exposed to Beethoven and Bach on TikTok. According to joint research by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, French music streaming service Deezer and British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in 2020, 34% of those streaming classical music from 2019 to 2020 were 18 to 25, and classical streams by listeners under 35 rose by 17%. Many got their first exposure to this kind of music by watching videos from TikTok users like TwoSet Violin and oboe player Spencer Rubin who told The NY Post, “I think that with social media, we’re able to de-stigmatize the sense that classical music is super fancy and needs to be perfect.”

AMERICA'S WHITE POPULATION SHRANK FOR THE FIRST TIME:  The Census Bureau released data yesterday (August 12th) from the every-10-years count that was carried out in 2020, showing that the U.S. became both more diverse and more urban over the past decade. The release showed that the non-Hispanic white population fell for the first time on record, from 63.7 percent in 2010 to 57.8 percent in 2020, driven by falling birthrates compared to Hispanics and Asians. People who identify as a race other than white, Black, Asian, American Indian, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, either alone or in combination with one of those races, is now the second-largest racial group. Hispanics grew by almost one-quarter since 2010, accounting for more almost half of the overall population growth. Americans continue to move to the South and West from the Midwest and Northeast, but almost all of the decade's growth took place in metropolitan areas, with more people moving from smaller counties to more urban counties. The share of children in the U.S. declined because of falling birth rates, and the share of adults grew, driven by aging baby boomers.

➤'JEOPARDY!' CONTESTANT MOVES INTO THIRD ON ALL-TIME EARNINGS LIST: As all the attention has been focused on who's going to host Jeopardy!, a current contestant has been racking up wins, and after his 17th straight victory in the show that aired last night got him another $42,400, PhD student Matt Amodio has now moved into third place on the all-time earnings list with $547,600. He's now only behind Jeopardy! legends Ken Jennings, who won $2.52 million, and James Holzhauer, who won $2.46 million. Jeopardy!'s season ends today, so if Amodio wins again, he'll be there when new host Mike Richards takes over in September.

➤YOUNG INAUGURAL POET ESTABLISHES AWARD FOR HIGH SCHOOL POETS: Amanda Gorman, the 23-year-old poet who won accolades after reading her poem, "The Hill We Climb," at President Biden's inauguration in January, has established a poetry prize for high school students with Penguin Random House. The Amanda Gorman Award for Poetry is a $10,000 prize for public high school students who submit the best original work. Public high school seniors in the U.S. and U.S. territories who plan to attend a two- or four-year college are eligible, with the application period running from October 1st to February 1st, 2022.

⚾WHITE SOX WIN 'FIELD OF DREAMS' GAME IN WALKOFF: The Chicago White Sox won the Field of Dreams game 9-8 over the New York Yankees last night on a ninth-inning walkoff home run. Chicago's Tim Anderson hit the two-run homer with one out, launching it into the cornfield before 7,832 fans in the temporary stadium set up next to the site in Dyersville, Iowa, used to film the classic 1989 baseball movie. That came after Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton each hit two-run homers for the Yankees in the top of the ninth. Both teams were wearing 1919-style uniforms for the game, which began with Field of Dreams star Kevin Costner slowly walking out of the cornfield beyond the outfield, followed by the players. Commissioner Rob Manfred has said a Field of Dreams game will be played again next season.

⚾BREWERS' URIAS TIES MLB RECORD WITH FIVE EXTRA-BASE HITS: Milwaukee's Luis Urias tied the MLB record with five extra-base hits last night in the Brewers' 17-4 rout of the Chicago Cubs. Urias homered in the seventh and ninth innings and also hit three doubles, driving in five runs and scoring five. He is now the 16th MLB player with five-extra base hits in a game. The game also featured teammate Manny Pina driving in six runs, with a grand slam and two-run homer.

🏀STORM BEAT SUN 79-57 IN WNBA'S INAUGURAL COMMISSIONER'S CUP: The Seattle Storm beat the Connecticut Sun 79-57 last night in the WNBA's inaugural Commissioner's Cup game. The Storm's Breanna Stewart, Sue Bird and Jewell Loyd contributed to the win, just five days after helping the U.S. women's team win its seventh consecutive Olympic gold medal in Tokyo. Connecticut didn't have any Olympians.

The WNBA will resume its season on Sunday (August 15th) after breaking for a month for the Olympics.

🏀CLIPPERS RE-SIGN LEONARD TO FOUR-YEAR, $176 MILLION DEAL: Kawhi Leonard re-signed with the L.A. Clippers yesterday in a four-year, $176.3 million deal. Leonard, who previously declined his player option for the upcoming season to become a free agent, told the team last Friday that he was returning, and they've now finalized the deal. Leonard, a two-time NBA Finals MVP, is expected to miss significant time next season as he continues to recover from surgery last month to repair a partially-torn ACL.

Disney+ Growth Rebounds With 116M Subs

Walt Disney Co. parks saw a strong rebound in visitors as people left their pandemic cocoon, but the company acknowledged uncertainty ahead because of the coronavirus Delta variant, reports The Wall Street Journal.

“We did not anticipate—nor did I think anybody—the resurgence of Covid with the Delta variant that would have such a significant impact on the marketplace,” Chief Executive Bob Chapek said on the quarterly call with analysts.

The company posted fiscal third-quarter sales of $17 billion, up 45% from the year-ago quarter, when the pandemic locked down much of the world, but results were still below the $20.2 billion in the 2019 third quarter. Analysts polled by FactSet expected sales of $16.76 billion.

Overall, Disney beat analysts’ estimates for its fiscal third quarter and recorded $918 million in profit, or 50 cents a share, for the three-month period ended July 3, compared with a year-ago loss of $4.72 billion, or $2.61 a share. Adjusted earnings were 80 cents a share. Disney’s stock price climbed in after-hours trading to over $188 a share, up around 5% its close of $179.29 a share before the results were released.

The company’s theme parks and consumer products division posted its first profitable quarter in more than a year. Revenue at the division—which includes its storied Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts—increased 300% from the year-ago period, and it swung to a profit of $356 million for the quarter.

Disney executives said its parks have more reservations for the future than there was attendance in the third quarter. They didn’t discuss vaccinations or new restrictions due to the Delta variant. Last month, Disney reinstated an indoor mask mandate at its theme parks in the U.S. regardless of vaccination status.

Chapek reiterated that the direct-to-consumer streaming strategy is the company’s top priority and noted that moviegoers remained reluctant to go to theaters even as cinemas reopened.

Disney+ subscriber numbers beat estimates, reaching 116 million, up from 103.6 million in the second quarter, but its Hulu services had even higher growth rates. Total Hulu subscriptions rose 21% from a year ago, to 42.8 million. Hulu’s paid service generates more than three times the average monthly revenue per subscriber when compared to Disney+, the company said in its report.

Chapek also underscored that Disney will be flexible and strategic about using a combination of exclusive theatrical releases, direct-to-streaming releases or a hybrid of the two for its upcoming movies. He said decisions would be made on a film-by-film basis.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek Denies Rift With Bob Iger

Disney CEO Bob Chapek defended the distribution strategy behind “Black Widow” that led to a lawsuit filed by star Scarlett Johansson last month, reports The Wrap.

”Both Bob Iger and I, along with the distribution team, decided this was the best strategy because it enabled us to reach the broadest audience,” Chapek said on Disney’s earnings call on Thursday.

He added: “Distribution decisions are made on a film-by-film basis, based on market conditions and consumer behavior.”

His response sidestepped the issue that Johansson raised in her lawsuit — which was not about the studio’s decision to release the Marvel film simultaneously in theaters and as a premium streaming release on Disney+ but about how that decision impacted the compensation plan under her contract. According to the actress, her contract was worded around an exclusive theatrical release, and her compensation included significant bonuses based on the film’s box office grosses that insiders told the Wall Street Journal could add up to $50 million.

“Disney intentionally induced Marvel’s breach of the agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel,” the suit said.

In a sharply worded response that drew significant blowback around Hollywood, Disney said the lawsuit had “no merit whatsoever” and called Johansson “callous” for asking for more than her upfront salary of $20 million.

During Thursday’s earnings call, Chapek defended the move — and noted that it had successfully negotiated with other stars in the last year. “Since COVID has begun, we have entered into hundreds of talent arrangements with our talent, and by and large they have gone very smoothly,” he said.

Disney Buys NHL Stake In Streaming Platform

Disney is paying $350 million to the NHL to buy out the hockey league’s 10 percent stake in Disney Streaming Services, the tech platform owned by Disney that powers its streaming services, reports The Wrap.

The NHL held a buyout option which it exercised on Aug. 3. Disney revealed the buyout as part of its fiscal third quarter earnings, which you can read more about here.

Disney now owns 85% of Disney Streaming Services, with Major League Baseball owning the remaining 15 percent. Disney acquired a majority stake in the company back in 2017, when it was known as BAMTech.

MLB created the company in 2015 as a spinoff from MLB Advanced Media, the league’s multimedia division. Disney renamed it into Disney Streaming Services in 2018.

MLB has the right to sell its remaining interest in the company, and Disney has the right to buy it, beginning in 2027. According to Disney, the floor market value for MLB’s stake is $752 million.

The NHL will be back on ESPN next season for the first time in 17 years, courtesy of a 7-year rights deal that will begin in October.

The agreement includes four Stanley Cup Finals over the life of the deal for ESPN’s sister broadcast network ABC, which runs from 2022 through 2028. Disney will have the option to simulcast the championship round on ESPN+. The NHL’s out-of-market streaming package, which allows fans to watch every game of the season (blacked out in home markets), will move over to ESPN+ as well.

Many Clay & Buck Show Affiliates See Ratings Increase

Premiere Network announced Thursday that 'The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show' drove significant audience gain in several Top 50 markets during their first full month on air.

Comparing July 2021 to June 2021, many affiliates experienced an increase in AQH levels in the program's Noon to 3 timeslot, including a 38.4% AQH increase on WOR-AM New York a 7.3% gain on KEIB-AM Los Angeles, and a 6.3% lift on KTRH-AM Houston.  Other month-over-month ratings gains called out by the network are WIOD-AM Miami (+31.8%), KFYI-AM Phoenix (+21.4%), KDFD-AM Denver (+20.6%), WOAI-AM San Antonio (+52%) and KNRS-FM Salt Lake City (+18.8%). Premiere also points to double digit gains on KLBJ-AM Austin, WTKK-FM Raleigh, WISN-AM Milwaukee, WNIS-AM Norfolk, and WPTI-FM Greensboro and a 118.2% increase for WLAC-AM/Nashville. (Nielsen: Adults 35-64)

“The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show” launched June 21 on more than 400 radio stations nationwide, taking over the 12-3pm daypart occupied for more than three decades by the late Rush Limbaugh.

“We couldn’t be more proud of Clay & Buck,” said Julie Talbott, President of Premiere Networks. “Rush Limbaugh left very big shoes to fill, but their effort to honor his legacy while creating a new program that entertains and informs millions of people across the country, is clearly paying off and resonating with listeners. We’re excited to see what the future holds for this talented duo.”

Nielsen Puts Itself In MRC Time-Out

Nielsen Holdings PLC has asked the Media Rating Council, the media industry’s measurement watchdog, to pause accreditation for its national TV rating service, a move that would leave the measurement giant’s core product without the organization’s seal of approval for the first time since the 1960s.

The Wall Street Journal reports the company chalked up the request to concerns regarding its panel, the group of people the company uses to assess ratings in the U.S., as well as efforts to modernize its national TV measurement product.

“We believe hiatus is the best course of action at this time and will allow us to focus on innovating our core products, continuing to deliver data that the industry can rely on and ultimately creating a better media future for the entire industry,” Nielsen said in a statement.

A suspension of its accreditation could further erode the confidence of Nielsen’s TV network customers and advertisers after concerns were raised about challenges maintaining its panel system during the pandemic and other issues that led to an undercounting of viewers. But short-term effects likely won’t hit the company’s bottom line, said Douglas M. Arthur, an analyst at Huber Research Partners LLC, in an email.

Nielsen’s customer contracts don’t require the company to have accreditation, and there is still not much competition for prime-time TV ratings data, he said.  However, losing such a stamp of approval could give customers more leverage when a new contract comes up, he said.

The Video Advertising Bureau, which represents many large TV networks, in July called for the MRC to suspend Nielsen’s accreditation partly because of the panel’s problems during the pandemic.

Companies have long criticized Nielsen’s ratings system, which is the underpinning of nearly all transactions in the $70 billion traditional TV advertising business in the U.S. But the criticisms boiled anew after the MRC this spring said that Nielsen had under counted TV viewers by up to 6% during the month of February 2021.

➦In 2007...Phil Rizzuto, NY Yankees player and announcer died in his sleep, three days short of the 51st anniversary of his last game as a Yankee, exactly twelve years after the death of Mickey Mantle, and just over one month shy of his 90th birthday. He had been in declining health for several years and was living at a nursing home in West Orange, New Jersey for the last months of his life. At the time of his death, at age 89, Rizzuto was the oldest living member of Baseball's Hall of Fame.

Phil Rizzuto
After a long Hall of Fame career as a player, Rizzuto broadcast Yankee games on radio and television for the 40 years. His popular catchphrase was "Holy Cow." Rizzuto also became known for saying "Unbelievable!" or "Did you see that?" to describe a great play, and would call somebody a "huckleberry" if he did something Rizzuto did not like.

He would frequently wish listeners a happy birthday or anniversary, send get-well wishes to fans in hospitals, and speak well of restaurants he liked, or of the cannoli he ate between innings. He also joked about leaving the game early, saying to his wife, "I'll be home soon, Cora!" and "I gotta get over that bridge", referring to the nearby George Washington Bridge, which he would use to get back to his home in Hillside. In later years, Rizzuto would announce the first six innings of Yankee games; the TV director would sometimes puckishly show a shot of the bridge (which can be seen from the top of Yankee Stadium) after Rizzuto had departed. Rizzuto was also very phobic about lightning, and sometimes left the booth following violent thunderclaps.

Rizzuto started his broadcasting career working alongside Mel Allen and Red Barber in 1957. Among a number of announcers that Rizzuto worked with over the course of his career, Frank Messer (1968-1985) and Bill White (1971-1988) were the two most memorable. Rizzuto, Messer, and White were the main broadcast trio that presided over an important time period for the Yankees, which spanned from the non-winning CBS years through the championship seasons and other years of struggle during the Steinbrenner era. On television, for example, the Yankees broadcast team went unchanged from 1972-82.

➦In 2010...Edwin Harold Newman died at age 91 (Born - January 25, 1919). He was anewscaster, journalist, and author. After beginning his career with the wire services and serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Newman worked in radio for CBS News. He is known for a 23-year career in television news with the National Broadcasting Company, from 1961 to 1984.

Newman - 1975
Newman initially worked for the wire services: first for the International News Service as a copy boy, mostly in the Senate, and then United Press. On Sunday, December 7, 1941, the day of the attack on Pearl Harbor, he heard the news during a radio concert. When he rang the office asking if he should come in, the reply was "Hell yes!" Newman took dictation for 12 hours as United Press reporters phoned in their stories.

He served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1945 as a signal officer, stationed first in Trinidad and then at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Following the war Newman worked as a reporter for United Press (1945–1946, primarily reporting about the State Department), before moving to the CBS News radio division (1947–1949) as assistant to Eric Sevareid.

Between 1949 and 1952 Newman worked as a freelancer, primarily for NBC News. He wrote for a number of publications and, in 1951. In 1952, Newman began to work full-time for NBC. Between 1961 and 1984, Newman participated in a wide variety of NBC programs, primarily for NBC News. He was a regular on the Today show and was its news anchor from July 24 to December 22, 1961, then a contributor and guest host. On Meet the Press, he was a frequent panelist and moderator.

TV Ratings: CNN's Cuomo Tanks With Women

    What? Me Worry?

CNN anchor Chris Cuomo's viewership among women experienced a sharp decline last week after a New York State Attorney General's report that found his brother, the outgoing governor of New York, sexually harassed at least 11 women.

The Wrap reports “Cuomo Prime Time” averaged 453,000 total female viewers, of whom just 76,000 were in the advertiser-coveted age demographic of 25 to 54, according to Nielsen Media Research ratings data. (Cuomo was off Friday.)

In total female viewers, that’s a 21% decrease from his second-quarter average of 570,000 and in the demo, it’s a 41% decrease from his second-quarter average of 128,000. Year-to-date, total average female viewership was down last week by 45% and was down in the demo 61%. Compared to the same four days last year, “Cuomo Prime Time” was down 48% in average female viewers, falling from 878,000, and was down 64% in demo-age female viewers, falling from 213,000.

Cuomo last appeared on the network on Thursday and he did not mention at any point last week the accusations against his brother Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), who announced his resignation Tuesday.

“Every year I take my birthday week off. I’m looking forward to it,” he said. "I’ll be fishing, I’ll be hanging out with you and I’ll be making memories with the kids.”

Chris Cuomo was mentioned in the attorney general's report, which stated that the anchor sent his brother an email in which he proposed lines that were eventually included in a late February statement to respond to allegations that were made against him last winter.

When news of his collaboration with his brother first came to light through media reports, Chris Cuomo apologized and said it wouldn't happen again.

Several media critics have said Cuomo's contacts with his brother during the early days of the scandal raise serious journalistic ethics questions and some have called for the network to launch an investigation into the incident.

CBS This Morning Adds Nate Burleson As Co-Host

    Nate Burleson

CBS today announced a new long-term, multiplatform agreement with versatile announcer and former NFL player Nate Burleson across CBS News, CBS Sports and ViacomCBS’ Nickelodeon. The announcement was made by Neeraj Khemlani, President and Co-head, CBS News and Stations, and Sean McManus, Chairman, CBS Sports.

Beginning in September, Burleson will join CBS THIS MORNING as co-host with Gayle King and Tony Dokoupil, anchoring the Network’s flagship morning program, 7:00-9:00 AM, ET weekdays. Burleson recently appeared on CBS THIS MORNING as a guest host during the week of May 17, 2021.

Burleson joined CBS Sports in 2017 as analyst on THE NFL TODAY, the CBS Television Network’s NFL pregame, halftime and post-game show. He will continue in his analyst role alongside host James Brown and co-analysts Phil Simms, Bill Cowher and Boomer Esiason on Sundays during the NFL season.

The agreement also includes select yearly appearances on Nickelodeon in a variety of capacities. Burleson made his successful Nickelodeon debut earlier this year with the special kids-themed production of the NFL Wild Card Game.

Burleson’s role with NFL Network, where he most recently served as a host on the Emmy-nominated “Good Morning Football,” will expand to include a larger variety of programs and platforms. Throughout the year, Burleson will appear on various NFL Network shows such as “NFL GameDay” and “NFL Total Access,” and on-location coverage of events such as Super Bowl week, NFL Honors and training camp, as well as maintain a larger presence on NFL Media’s social media and podcast offerings.

“Nate is an extremely gifted broadcaster, interviewer and storyteller, whose deep curiosity and enthusiasm are the perfect fit for mornings on CBS,” said Neeraj Khemlani, President and Co-head of CBS News and Stations. “His wide range of experience and interests – from news to sports, from music to poetry, and from fashion to cryptocurrency – provides a unique perspective that will deepen the show’s connection with our viewers. He excites audiences in every arena, and we’re fortunate to have Nate joining Gayle and Tony at the table in September.”

“I am absolutely thrilled to be joining the incredibly talented team at CBS THIS MORNING. This is an extraordinary opportunity, and I look forward to the challenge of upholding the standard set by the legends who came before me,” said Burleson. “Life is about being ready for the right opportunities, and I have been preparing for this moment since my first day on television. Having a chance to inform, enhance or simply brighten up the morning for our viewers is an honor. The sport of football and I will always be inextricably intertwined. I feel so fortunate to join CTM while continuing to play a role at the NFL Network, and of course, spending Sundays with the team on THE NFL TODAY.”

Double Jeopardy! Two To Host The TV Game Show

    Mike Richards

After weeks of guest hosts on “Jeopardy!” that included celebrities from TV, sports and journalism, the daily syndicated quiz show chose its executive producer, Mike Richards, as the successor to beloved host Alex Trebek, reports The Associated Press.

Richards, who had been heavily rumored as the frontrunner since last week, will serve as the primary host for “Jeopardy!,” while Bialik will host the primetime and spin-off specials, including the just-announced “Jeopardy! National College Tournament” that will air on ABC in 2022.

In a nod to “Jeopardy!” devotees, longest winning-streak champion Ken Jennings will return as a consulting producer.

Richards will retain executive producing duties for “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune,” Sony Pictures Television said in a statement Wednesday. The studio also appeared to deflect the idea that it was bowing to the dismay that some fans expressed when word leaked last week that Richards would be the pick.

Bialik, who played a scientist on “The Big Bang Theory” sitcom and is one in real life, was among the fan favorites to succeed Trebek.

“We knew early on that we wanted to divide the hosting responsibilities and it became very clear that Mike and Mayim were the undeniable choices. They were both at the top of our research and analysis,” said Ravi Ahuja, Chairman of Global Television Studios for Sony Pictures. “We took this decision incredibly seriously.”

As a guest host, Ahuja said Richards was “at ease behind the podium and a double threat as producer and host. Mayim has a wonderful energy, an innate sense of the game, and an authentic curiosity that naturally represents the ‘Jeopardy!’ brand.”

Richards was the second of the temp hosts who filled the void left by Trebek’s death, with “Jeopardy!” champs Jennings and Buzzy Cohen, actors Bialik and LeVar Burton, NFL player Aaron Rodgers and TV journalists among the others.

Richards has an extensive, Emmy Award-winning game show resume. He was the executive producer of “The Price is Right” and “Let’s Make a Deal” for more than a decade and produced the 2020 revival of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” His on-camera experience includes hosting “The Pyramid” and “Beauty and the Geek,” a reality show.

He joined “Jeopardy!” as the replacement for retiring executive producer Harry Friedman starting with the 2020-21 season, and was in the job for only a few months when Trebek, 80, died last November of pancreatic cancer. Trebek was host for 37 seasons.
